Setup and Indication with PLICSCOM

The PLICSCOM, with its entirely new adjustment philosophy, offers extensive practical convenience. To allow easy use from any position, it can be mounted in the housing in four positions 90° apart. Indication and adjustment are carried out via four plastic foil keys and a large, concise, graphics-capable and illuminated dot matrix display. The adjustment menu with selectable language is clearly structured and allows easy setup. After setup, the PLICSCOM serves as indicating instrument: level and pressure values are viewed directly through the screw-on lid with window insert in the desired unit and presentation style.

Diagnosis and Service with PLICSCOM

In the unlikely event of failure, the cause is displayed on the PLICSCOM. In addition, instrument data such as measuring range, process fitting, seal material as well as recorded process data of level, pressure and temperature can be called up. In conjunction with suitable instruments, the PLICSCOM can also display echo curves. When a sensor is replaced, the PLICSCOM ensures that the measurement loop is quickly up and running again – all sensor data is saved with a quick keystroke and transferred later to the replacement sensor.

Configuration and Parameter Adjustment with PACTware

PACTware is the innovative configuration software for all field instruments, from mobile computer to process control center. As a free-of-charge, manufacturer-independent software, PACTware constitutes the Fieldbus-independent interface for data exchange between all current protocols of communication-capable field devices, such as HART and Fieldbus. In practice, this means a single user interface can be used for adjustment and operation of all plics® instruments as well as for over 40 other instrument manufacturers.

Asset Management on Board

Because of PACTware’s ship-wide failure recognition and evaluation capability, it is an ideal decision platform for maintenance measures. It makes the data of all communication components and field devices comprehensively and centrally available. After the status of field instruments and other ship components has been recognized and evaluated, proactive maintenance, for example, can be carried out. This in turn increases instrument availability and ensures smooth, trouble-free operation of the ship.

Cargo Tanks on Board

The levels of storage tanks on board of chemical tankers must be continuously monitored because of strict safety and environmental requirements. Overfilling or product discharge on deck or into the sea could have devastating consequences for life and the environment. Charge and discharge procedures have to be carefully supervised and under control. Continuous level measurement and redundant high level or high high level monitoring level switches are essential parts of the safety redundant system. The internal pressure of the tanks is monitored continuously to prevent damage to the tanks caused by low pressure during charge and discharge procedures. All measured values and alarm signals are visualized both in the loading control room and on the bridge.

Continuous Level Measurement with VEGAPULS 63

Changing products, fluctuating temperature, and different densities are a special challenge for level meaurement in product tanks. VEGAPULS 63 radar sensors are unaffected by temperature, pressure, or gas stratification and deliver accurate measurement data right from the start. The measure ment is insensitive to density fluctuations of the products because the sensor always measures the distance to the product surface. The PTFE-coated antenna ensures optimum chemical resistance even for applications in aggressive products.

Inert Gas Pressure with VEGABAR 52

The VEGABAR 52 pressure transmitter is particularly suitable for monitoring the gas pressure in product tanks. Its ceramic-capacitive CERTEC® measuring cell enables precise monitoring (to within several millibars) of the internal tank pressure and even withstands pressure shocks due to rough seas.

95% and 98% Alarm with VEGASWING 63

To ascertain the 95% and 98% alarms, two VEGASWING 63 vibrating level switches are applied. The sensors operate independently of one another. The VEGASWING 63 is ideally suited for this application due to its rugged construction, insensitivity to buildup, and reliable switching characteristics in conjunction with changing products. Its self-test key makes fast and reliable on-site checking possible.

Counteracting the Heel

The heeling of a ship is often attributed to high winds, uneven cargo load, and hard turns. The anti-heeling system automatically compensates for list and trim of the ship. Especially with container ships and ferries, they prevent critical ship orientations caused by the cargo. With cruise ships they are primarily applied for the comfort of the passengers, while on research vessels they assure a steady platform in the groundswell. To counter the various causes of heeling, ballast tanks and accessory ballast tanks are connected to each other by means of pipeline systems. Butterfly valves provide fast opening or closing of the connecting lines. Depending on the orientation of the ship, the tanks are either blown out or flooded by means of compressed air blowers or pumps.

Level Detection with VEGASWING 61

In order to prevent overfilling of the ballast tanks, the pumps or blowers have to be switched off quickly. The VEGASWING 61 vibrating level switch is a wear and maintenance-free sensor and is the ideal solution for adjustment-free level detection in the ballast tanks.

Millimeter-Precise Level Measurement with VEGAWELL 52

In order to be able to correct the ship’s orientation, the ballast tank contents must be precisely measured. Even with a heel of only 2.5°, the track connections of a ferry can be torn apart. Quick reaction, high precision, and long-term stability characterize this level measurement. Large ferries are able to transfer up to 7,500 tons of ballast water per hour. The pressure transmitter VEGAWELL 52 is the ideal solution for this application. With its ceramic-capacitive CERTEC® measuring cell it can withstand extreme pressure shocks up to 20 times higher than the nominal measuring range, and guarantees excellent long-term stability as well, and is designed to operate in a saturated salt water solution.

Protection of Onboard and Dock Equipment

Monitoring the pipeline pressures at the manifold ensures the safety of onboard and dock equipment, and provides the basis for pump control. If pump pressure is too high or if valves remain closed during charging and discharging processes, a pressure indication can alert the operation of the malfunction; damage to the manifold or cargo tanks can occur. The pressure indication provides the required security for this process.

Pressure Monitoring during Charging and Discharging Procedure with VEGABAR 54

The hydraulic submersible pumps convey different products from the storage tanks with pressures up to 232 psi (16 bar). VEGABAR 64 with its front-flush ceramic diaphragm is particularly suitable for monitoring the pressure in the product pipeline. The ceramic-capacitive CERTEC® measuring cell is not affected by abrasive or corrosive products and can be easily cleaned. The indication and adjustment module PLICSCOM locally displays the existing pressure.

VEGABAR 53 – Control Pressure for Feed Pumps

The hydraulic feed pumps are operated with an onboard pressure between 2,320 and 3,626 psi (160 to 250 bar). VEGABAR 53 is used to regulate the output of these hydraulic pumps. The rugged strain gauge measuring cell in the sensor can withstand a hydraulic pressure up to 5,800 psi (400 bar).

Draft, Trim, and List

The most important measurements onboard are the measuring points for calculating draft, trim, and list. Ship safety depends heavily on them. Using the transmitted values from the different measuring points, the load master, as part of the cargo control system (CCS), can determine the exact values of ship orientation and draft. Usually, two forepeak measuring points and two additional afterpeak measuring points are used.

Reliability and Accuracy with VEGAWELL 52

VEGAWELL 52 pressure transmitters ensure reliable and accurate measuring results. The encapsulated stainless steel housing in protection class IP 68 and IP 69K provides reliable protection against external moisture for the electronics and measuring cell. The rugged sapphire ceramic measuring cell can withstand pressure shocks up to 20 times higher than the nominal measuring range in addition to high corrosion resistance.

VEGABAR 17 for Bubbler Measurement Systems

The bubbler technique is one of the oldest and best known methods of draft measurement. VEGABAR 17 is convincing in this application due to its price/performance ratio and the function zero/span adjustment.

Service and Settling Tank

To ensure fuel feed to the main engine, the separated heavy fuel oil (HFO) is first pumped into the settling tank (buffer tank). The connected service tank (day tank) is filled via continuous overflow from the settling tank and is connected directly to the main engine. Heating coils in both tanks ensure an even temperature between 167°F and 194°F (75°C and 90°C), which keeps the oil pumpable.

Level Measurement with VEGAFLEX 61

The heavy fuel oil stored in the service and settling tanks has a high storage temperature and contains a number of different chemical compounds. Sticky oil vapors make the level measurement very difficult. The VEGAFLEX 61 guided microwave sensor easily masters this problem. It guarantees a reliable measurement from the top. The space-saving mounting of the cable version makes it the ideal level measuring instrument for all heavy fuel oil tanks.

Monitoring the Bilge

Every motorized ship has a bilge well, which is a space between the floor of the engine room and the bottom of the ship. A water/oil mixture collects in this space at the lowest point of the ship. The mixture is then separated into water and oil by an onboard skimmer and demulsifying unit. After passing through various cleaning processes, the water can be pumped out. The bilge de-oiling equipment is controlled by level switches.

Engine Monitoring

Due to safety and environmental considerations, oil and fuel lines of the main engine and ancillary units are continuously monitored. The level in the oil drip pan or collecting vessel is also monitored in order to detect possible leaks.

Level and Leakage Detection with VEGASWING 51

The VEGASWING 51 vibrating level switch is mainly characterized by its small and compact design. The small dimensions allow mounting in practically any place or position. Foam, bubble formation, and viscosity do not affect the switching accuracy; VEGASWING 51 is thus an ideal solution.

Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) Applications

These gases can be liquefied under a pressure of approximately 145 psi (10 bar) or by cooling them down to

-94°F to -274°F (-70°C to -170°C). For economical reasons, both physical principles are often used in combination. Due to the considerable pressure and temperature loads on the materials, the tanks are made of special stainless steel and insulated from the body of the ship. Spherical tanks are commonly used.

VEGAPULS 66 with Ball Valve Fitting

Radar’s non-contact measuring principle enables simple and reliable level measurement. Operating in c-band technology, VEGAPULS 66 only requires a vessel opening diameter of 2 in (50 mm). This allows dependable measurement right through the channel of a ball valve fitting. Due to the low reflective properties of liquid gas, the use of a standpipe is recommended.

LNG – Extremely Low Temperatures

VEGAPULS 63 is the ideal sensor for applications in very low temperatures. Due to the front-flush PTFE-coated antenna, the sensor requires no sealing material and can be applied in extremely low temperatures down to -328°F (-200°C).

Monitoring the Tank Pressure

Because the liquefaction process depends to a large degree on the pressure inside the tank, this pressure must be monitored continuously. To carry this out at extremely low temperatures, the medium that conveys the pressure to the measuring instrument must be warmed up to -40°F (-40°C) via evaporation lines. VEGABAR 52 is particularly suitable for this application because of its ceramic measuring cell. The special seal material as well as the dry measuring cell make the sensor suitable for product temperatures down to -58°F (-50°C).

Drinking Water and Gray/Black Water

Drinking water is an essential commodity on a ship. It is stored in separate dedicated tanks. Depending on the type and size of the ship, different amounts of fresh water are required for drinking, personal hygiene, and cleaning. The amount of water stored in the tanks can be from 50 to 400 tons and depends largely on whether the ship has a desalinization plant. Direct electrical measuring principles are mandatory for level measurement. Waste water, often called gray or black water, is treated on large ships in onboard clarification plants, or stored in special gray/black water tanks to await final disposal.

Gray or Black Water Measurement with VEGAPULS 61

Due to the large concentration of solids and the changing density of the tank contents, non-contact measurement with radar technology qualifies well for this application. The VEGAPULS 61 sensor with PVDF-encapsulated antenna is resistant against the corrosive gases in the tank and requires only a 1½" NPT threaded mounting boss as process fitting.

VEGABAR 54 in Drinking Water

Flanged directly onto the tank, VEGABAR 54 measures the level reliably and accurately. Materials approved for drinking water and a front-flush diaphragm form the basis of a flawlessly hygienic measurement. The rugged sapphire ceramic diaphragm withstands chemical as well as mechanical cleaning. The external electronics can be mounted at an easily accessible place.

Ballast Water in the Wing and Double Bottom Tanks

The ballast water measurements in the wing and double bottom tanks go directly into the calculations for ship trim, draft, and list. Since the measuring sites during operation on board are virtually inaccessible, reliability and stability are an absolute must. Pressure shocks, abrasive sand particles, and brackish water place additional heavy demands on the instrumentation.

VEGABAR 66 for Double Bottom Tanks

Thanks to its separate electronics, sensor housing in IP 69K, and ceramic measuring cell, the pressure transmitter VEGABAR 66 is the perfect sensor for harsh conditions. The mounting bosses, which are partly located on deck, are sealed with stainless steel process fittings and thus withstand the effects of the atmosphere or breaking waves. The climate compensated electronics can be installed on site.

VEGAPULS 66 in the Wing Tank

VEGAPULS 66 offers reliable and safe measurement in the straight, vertical wing tanks. The sensors are unaffected by breaking waves and abrasion. Temperature fluctuations in the tank also do not influence the measuring result. The housing is available in an IP 68 version and does not need ventilation. A special connection is available for optional hand sounding.

Service Tanks Onboard Navy and Research Vessels

To extend the duration of stay at sea, every cubic centimeter of space on Navy and research vessels is utilized. Existing cavities or inaccessible places on the ship are used as additional tanks for drinking water, diesel, or aviation fuel. The tank shape and dimensions are completely different from familiar standard tanks and, depending on the type of ship and size, can extend over several decks. The tank content can be anywhere from 5,000 to 100,000 U.S. gallons.

Level Measurement with VEGAPULS 66

A sounding pipe provided by the shipyard is sufficient for a reliable and precise level measurement in the tank. The non-contact radar measurement with VEGAPULS 66 is the best solution, regardless of tank form or product. The microwaves are guided through the tube to the tank bottom or strike plate. The advanced configuration software can learn out the weld seams typically associated with sounding tubes. A typical sounding tube can vary between 1.5" – 2" ID.

Special Solutions with VEGAPULS 66

The VEGAPULS 66 radar sensor is used for special applications on ships in the US Navy. Existing hand sounding pipes are used for measuring the levels. The radar sensor couples its signal directly into the sounding pipe and makes the classic radar antenna unnecessary. VEGAPULS 66 can be swiveled from the sounding pipe by means of a special holder if a manual sounding is necessary due to a power failure.
