Companies That Cross BordersNOT MANY COMPANIES IN EUROPE’S SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY CAN AFFORD TO FOCUS ONLY ON THEIR DOMESTIC market. Crossing borders is how we do business – not just within Europe, but across the globe. That’s why events like Europort 2013 are so important.

Europort underlines the competitiveness of Europe’s shipbuilders and marine equipment manufacturers in the global market. But it’s also clear that sustaining the industry into the future requires a concerted effort on the part of Europe’s policymakers – and that requires a unified voice that looks beyond national interests. In this issue of ShipBuilding Industry, SEA Europe’s Govert Hamers outlines the need for a single voice to speak on behalf of the many and diverse companies engaged in Europe’s marine technology and shipbuilding (starting on pg 30). He’ll also be speaking at this year’s Mare Forum at Europort – one of the many leading panellists from the maritime industry in Europe (and beyond). As CEO of Yellow & Finch Publishers I take great pride not only in this special issue of ShipBuilding Industry for Europort, but also our role in supporting the Europort organisation as publisher of the official show catalogue. This important contract reflects our experience as publisher of leading maritime business magazines that reach industry readers around the world. As experts in maritime marketing, we offer a range of publishing and promotions services to maximise the commercial opportunities for companies that cross borders. To find out more, drop by our stand at Europort – P111 near the Europort Theatre between Halls 1 and 2. Or get in touch with me – I’ll be glad to discuss your marketing plans.

Pipelaying vessel Sapura Diamante was launched at a ceremony at the IHC Merwede’s shipyard in the Netherlands. The 550t vessel – ordered by Sapura Navegação Marítima, a joint venture between SapuraKencana and Seadrill – is the first in a series of five fully integrated offshore vessels, which will be completely designed, engineered and built by IHC Merwede. Sapura Diamante will be used to develop deepsea oilfields of up to 2,500 m in Brazilian waters on behalf of Petrobras. Photo by Dennis Vinkoert

Two years ago on the rugged West coast of Norway, I participated in a press tour to chart the Norwegian offshore industry. While chatting with the tour organiser Christina Dupré-Roos of Blue-C about the rapid developments in the offshore industry it crossed my mind to organise a Dutch Offshore Press Tour. After all, Holland distinguishes itself with a globally competitive group of suppliers to the offshore industry. The Dutch maritime and offshore cluster focuses on high-end markets that require exceptional levels of expertise and research-based innovation. To cut a long story short, this September witnessed the first Dutch press tour with leading Dutch companies meeting the international press, organised by Blue-C. Huisman Equipment, SBM Offshore, Mammoet Europe and Damen Ship Repair & Conversion were targeted first. IHC Merwede Offshore & Marine, Damen Shipyards and Pon Power hosted the rowdy bunch of fifteen international professional journalists and editors on the second day. The third day was fully occupied again with appointments at Sea Trucks Group (STG), Ulstein Sea of Solutions, Royal Boatmen’s Association (KRVE) and concluding with

a sight-seeing tour through the Port of Rotterdam hosted by the Rotterdam Port Authority. Already drowned in information, the final day the group visited Ampelmann, Barge Master and a joint presentation of the Royal Dutch Shipowners Association (KVNR), Association of Dutch Suppliers

in the Oil and Gas Industry (IRO), Holland Shipbuilding Association and the Foundation Netherlands Maritime Country (NML). It was a tremendously successful press tour with the Very Best of Holland on display, although it was a bit of a shame that some major offshore players pulled out just before the tour started. But I’ll bet my bottom dollar they’ll be on board next time because the spin-off of such a tour consists of editorial attention in abundance in

leading international maritime magazines worldwide.
