my complaint about the shimano trinidad and torium reels has always been the drag system and the anti-reverse system. well, the carbontex drag washers from smoothdrag.com and cal's grease totally fixed the drag problem. the anti-reverse roller bearing and ambassaduer-style pawl (dog), however, still posed a risk of failure and personal injury. if i was going to fix that, i would use a stack of two anti-reverse roller bearings in line and add a spring for the pawl. well, i actually found that in a shimano reel. this is a little embarassing, but i never had a clue. the guys on bloody decks had mention this before, but i guess i must be working on the poor side of town. the incredibly expensive shimano trinidad 20 DC had never crossed my bench until recently. look what i found!
that's right, the shimano trinidad 20 DC has greased carbon fiber drag washers. but there's more. it also has a spring loaded pawl.
and finally, it has a double height anti-reverse roller bearing and inner tube!
well, with this inspiration (and a dog send to me by a guy on bloodydecks!), i finally decided to try in on a torium. here is the trinidad dc pawl spring.
here is the ambassaduer-style pawl that comes stock with the torium (and the standard trinidads).
you can see already how the pawl is damaged. the anti-reverse roller bearing in this reel is totally shot, so the pawl is doing all of the work.
the ambassaduer-style spring actually peels off fairly easily. then you can use a standard mill bastard file to clean up all of the burrs.
lay the spring flat.
now here's the tricky part. there is a little bit of a gap underneath the pawl that allows your new dog spring to get stuck. to avoid this, i added a shimano washer that i pulled out of my junk box and used this washer to shim the pawl. now the spring will not get stuck.
ok, now this washer is critical. without it, the pawl spring gets caught underneath the pawl and the pawl gets jammed in the "up and away" position. that means it won't work at all. i THINK that this washer is from the shimano tld 15. it should be spacer A, part #TLD 0047. i have to check the next TLD that comes in to make sure. i did not think to use the trinidad dc pawl that i already had. i will have to try that on the next reel.
install the pawl.
install the anti-reverse pawl keeper.
install the anti-reverse ratchet and your new spring loaded dog system is complete!
so there you have it, your clicking torium.

Alan, excellent. I can't seem to take a decent photo of my trick. You can use the spring of the star drag clicker and fit it behind the pawl, it fits perfectly in the gap between frame and pawl and takes about 5 minutes to fit. It works very well, I am not sure how long it will last though but is easy enough to replace. Will try and take a better picture

Hi I have done it the same as Pylstert and it works like a charm.Done it the first time i opened the reel as i didnt trust that pawl in standard form when i saw what it looked like. That little recess on the reel looks like it was made for this, but Shimano just never bothered with the spring.

I've replaced the whole anti reverse assembly with a new DC one on an old Trini and a Torium as the parts fit.
This is a more effective solution considering the price of the parts.

TrophyLike pylstert said fits perfectly. Bought my reel about 4 months ago and opened it the next day and placed the spring into the little slot. It still sits nice and tight in place. I used a stainless spring that i scavenged from my garage. Little bit thicker and longer than the star clicker spring.

Thanks for a great post Alan.
Now for the Tor 50. It doesn't have that plate either side. I'm going to try your spring plan there as it has 2 dogs and I have had a anti reverse roller bearing go on me while fighting a big Whaler shark and with the roller gone the reel occasionally slips and goes into reverse.
Have you tried the 50 yet?
What a nightmare trying to pull a big fish with a reel in reverse!!!! Was my fault though, Not enough maintenance on the reel allowed corrosion on the roller bearing.

Enigma, if that gap is there behind the pawls like on the 30, just pop a stainless coil spring in behind the pawl, it's as easy as that

You need a tap set and a 6mm tap and a hammer...

Next, screw the tap into the bush about 4 turns until it grips the bush firmly,
Remove the tap set from the tap but dont unscrew the tap from the bush
Lock the square end of the tap into a vise or use a vise grip and tap the area around the casing with your hammer
Lastly take the new Bearing, part number is MR 95 and push in with your hand, no mashining nothing!

Here is a schematic of the Shimano Torium 30 drag assembly.
Things you will notice immediately are the shapes of the internal holes in the Anti-reverse Ratchet and the first Key Washer. These parts fit over the drive shaft and are therefore locked into position. The Ear Washer also locks into the Main Gear by means of the two pins and the slots on the Main Gear.
By my logic the only two drag washers that act totally independent of the Drive Shaft and complete Drag Stack are the washers in Yellow?
The washers in blue act in conjunction with the drive shaft and complete Drag Stack? In other words, when the Dog pawl, Anti-reverse Ratchet and the Anti-reverse bearing has locked the Drive Shaft the washers in
Blue are forced into play under the Star Drag pressure. This pressure is ‘sandwiched’ by the Drag washers marked in Yellow above
If correct this far then the question begs what functions does each or combined efforts have on reeling and fighting drag pressure.
As the required drag pressure is always sent from the Star Drag down the Drive Shaft the bottom drag washer of the stack would be the final pressure plate to affect both reeling and fighting drag pressure?
So, my questions to the reel experts, especially those who are drag specialist, are…
1. How does each component of the stack function under reeling and fighting pressure?2. Does your entire drag stack function based on the load of the last and smallest of the washers?

Lets get the real experts to tell us how this works and how it should work for optimum performance
