From the people

“Our forefathers taught us to live in consonance with nature, its forests, mountains, animals and birds. Maybe I don’t know or understand enough, but our lives are guided by this philosophy. Today, the media – television, radio, newspapers – and the dazzling consumer goods available in the market are changing our lives. We would also like to live in beautiful houses, like those in the cities, but we are caught in a trap. Our traditions, our lack of education and our limited means of livelihood hold us back. Our experience tells us that the goods that come to the market from outside can be bought with money. But we have always bartered goods among ourselves to meet our needs. We have never had much use for money. A lot has changed, some for good, some for bad. I don’t know whether we are on the right path or not”A villager from Bade Kilepal, Bastanar Block, Bastar

House is a catalyst for change in socio-cultural pattern and other characteristics of human life, including economic development, since it forms a nucleus for the operations of many human activities and is an essential contributory factor for improvement in life as it provides

a sense of stability, dignity, economic security and confidence.

Housing is one of the five major elements of social and economic infrastructure, critical to the quality of life in rural areas, along-with

health, education, drinking water and roads.

For a shelter less person, possession of a house brings about a profound social change in his existence, endowing him with an identity, thus integrating him with his immediate social milieu.

House is a Dream which seldom materializes into reality for reasons obvious… and obviously beyond People’s control.

“None will share the dream for own Pucca House as who doesn’t fears to be labeled as day dreamer”

The project aims to provide ‘Debt Free’ homeownership to the Rural people and, through homeownership, to provide a higher degree of social security and an overall improvement in the “quality of life” of the families involved.

Shikhar believes that Rural people, if provided with a supportive environment, can help themselves and play a major role in the design, construction and management of their housing. Therefore, a variety of self-help strategies shall be undertaken.

Also, the cost of housing can be reduced if some of the elements of construction, which are within the capacity of the Rural people, are left to self-help energies of the Rural people themselves.

Observation of Planning Commission:Observation of Planning Commission:

“Ownership of even a small plot of land enables a family to raise its income, improve its nutritional status, have access to credit facilities and lead a more dignified life. Studies of economies of scale in farm operations show that modern agricultural technology is scale neutral in the case of a majority of food and cereal crops which the poor tend to grow. Horticulture, floriculture and vegetable cultivation on small plots of land, including homestead land, have proved beneficial for the poor. Agricultural laborers, therefore, need to be provided access to land to improve their economic and social well-being.” Section 3.2.71. (10th Five Year Plan)

Income:Income:

1.Produce additional income from selling plant products, surplus dairy, wood and timber, and animals.2.In an essentially low surplus economy, the money required for farming, daily expenses, healthcare, festive occasions and emergencies, is inevitably in excess of what is available. Villagers resort to informal credit for farming or further a livelihood option or to meet their expenses carrying high risk of falling into debt trap. Most villagers often end up taking more credit from private sources, which only compounds their debt with low hope of recovery.3.Poor families find access to cheap finance due to improved creditworthiness and ownership (secure legal rights) of mortgage able assets. 4.Forest produce processing units owned by cooperatives of the Villagers. Also to facilitate marketing and sales
