Instant Insight—Breaking Down the Barriers of Time, Space, and CostFor decades, businesses have had to maintain separate databases for their transactional applications and their analytics applications. This multiplicity of databases has driven up costs. It has also limited the value of data analytics and business intelligence, because moving and shaping large volumes of data is a slow and complex process that delays time-to-insight by hours or days.

The traditional pathway from data generation to business insight is inherently cumbersome and costly. Enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), and other mission-critical applications must be supported by databases optimized for transactional speed. Transactional data must then be transferred to a separate data warehouse that is optimized for analytics. This data transfer requires complex extract,

transform, and load (ETL) processes and is often an overnight batch job. Once the new data has been added to the warehouse, analytics structures, such as aggregates, indexes, cubes, and views, must be re-optimized to enable reasonable query performance, and data must sometimes be transferred yet again into specialized data marts. Only then can reports and queries be run to find out how the business is doing and what it can do better.

Despite all the time and effort devoted to loading and optimizing data, complex queries can still take hours or even days to run in a traditional data warehouse, and query response times keep getting longer as data volumes grow. In business scenarios requiring a fast response, such as a customer interaction or a short-term supply chain crisis, the opportunity to act in the most effective manner is long gone before the analysis can be started, much less completed.

Leading database vendors have made incremental advances for many years to address these challenges. By working closely together, Intel and SAP have practically eliminated the challenges altogether.

The SAP HANA platform, which is powered by the Intel Xeon processor E7 v2 family, enables businesses to store, access, and process all their data—transactional and analytical—on a single, blazingly fast database. There is no need to move data from one platform to another, and complex queries can be completed in seconds rather than hours (Figure 1). Just as importantly, there is no need for specialized analytics structures or performance tuning. SAP customers across nearly 30 industries have improved query performance by 12,380 times, on average, simply by using SAP HANA in place of—or alongside—their legacy databases.1

The breakthrough capabilities of SAP HANA can help businesses move toward:

• A single system of record for enterprise data, because there is no need to maintain separate repositories for transactions and analytics.

• Dramatically lower infrastructure and operational costs, with a single high-speed database and no need for complex data warehouse tuning.

• Real-time and near-real-time data analytics based on all available data, structured and unstructured, operational and historical.

These are not just incremental improvements, but potentially transformative new capabilities that can help businesses operate smarter and faster at almost every level. SAP HANA has already become the fastest-growing product SAP has ever delivered.2 It is being integrated throughout the SAP platform, and, according to SAP, will be the driving force for elevating customer business performance for years to come.

The First Real-Time Business PlatformAccording to Gartner, business intelligence (BI) and analytics will remain the top technology priority for chief information officers (CIOs) through 2017.4 A study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Sloan School of Management adds additional insight, showing that top performing organizations are twice as likely as lower performers to use analytics to guide their day-to-day operations and future strategies.5

By enabling real-time analytics on massive and diverse data sets, SAP HANA takes the advantages of BI and analytics to new heights. Businesses are able to make more information-driven decisions in far less time; and they can base those decisions on a complete view of their data, including fresh operational data. They can also embed analytics into their transactional applications to deliver better customer experiences and more intelligent machine-based decision making. From market demographics to individual sales engagements, from supply chains to factories, and from product development to financial planning, complete, real-time information and predictive analytics can help to increase efficiency, profitability, and customer satisfaction.

SAP HANA can be deployed as the underlying database for the SAP NetWeaver® Business Warehouse (SAP NetWeaver BW) application. It can be used to replace an existing database or as a “sidecar” accelerator, which can be implemented without disrupting existing solutions. With either approach, customers gain a high-speed, massively scalable data warehouse. SAP also supports real-time replication of data from existing transactional databases into SAP HANA to provide full support for real-time analytics.

SAP HANA can also be used as the underlying database or a sidecar accelerator for SAP Business Suite applications.6 The SAP ERP, SAP Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and SAP Supply Chain Management applications can all be deployed with SAP HANA to introduce new speed and intelligence into core business operations. This strategy provides real-time data analytics. It also delivers on the larger promise of SAP HANA by providing a single, high-speed, in-memory database to support both transactional and analytical applications. Infrastructure and operations become leaner and simpler, which can drive substantial reductions in overall costs.

Whether SAP HANA is used to complement or replace existing databases, customers gain a foundation for implementing real-time planning, execution, reporting, and analysis. They can integrate and access all data at any level of granularity, including data from applications, machine sensors, and social media. These capabilities are available today and have been implemented by many SAP customers.

Smarter, Faster Processes

You can use SAP HANA to speed up and enhance your current operations. You can also use it to fundamentally rethink core processes and support new business models that simply haven’t been possible before. SAP customers are doing both.

“Obviously, [SAP] HANA’s in-memo-

ry architecture accelerates routine

reporting functions, such as the

ability to run end of period

reports in seconds or minutes

instead of tying a database with

a batch run for hours. But process-

ing speed is the least of [SAP]

HANA’s potential benefits.”

How It WorksIntel and SAP have been collaborating together since 1997 and using Intel software tools since 2005 to deliver better performance for SAP applications running on Intel® architecture. During that time, servers based on Intel Xeon processors have come to account for more than 75 percent of all new SAP software deployments.13

The combined platform provides customers with greater choice and flexibility for their mission-critical environments in comparison with traditional RISC/UNIX solutions. It also helps to reduce total costs, so more resources are available for innovation. The breadth and depth of collaboration has increased substantially in recent years, as Intel and SAP have combined their hardware and software expertise to break down long-standing technology barriers. The SAP HANA platform has been a key focus.

Tightly Integrated Innovation

SAP HANA combines hybrid row and columnar data storage with massively parallel processing and in-memory computing to deliver breakthrough database performance.14 SAP HANA software is specifically optimized to take full advantage of the Intel Xeon processor E7 family, Intel’s most powerful server processors, which are built specifically for mission-critical computing environments (Figure 2). This tight integration is so critical that SAP HANA software is certified to run only on servers powered by the Intel Xeon processor E7 family. These processors provide a combination of hardware capabilities that are not available in any other industry-standard server platform, including large-memory capacity, a large and efficient cache hierarchy, high-core count, multi-threading, and advanced reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) features.

The latest Intel Xeon processor E7 v2 family takes SAP HANA performance and scalability to new heights. Performance tests indicate

these new servers cut query processing times in half compared with previous-generation systems, further accelerating time to insights and enabling businesses to process twice as many queries in a given time frame.15

Even more importantly, the Intel Xeon processor E7 v2 processor family increases in memory capacity by up to three times versus previous-generation servers.16 A four-socket system can be configured with up to six terabytes (TB) of memory and an eight-socket server with up to 12 TB, enough to hold many of today’s largest databases within the memory of a single server. SAP HANA also provides high data compression rates (up to 20 times) using columnar data models and library-based compression.17 The combination of multi-terabyte data capacity and efficient compression provides exceptional scalability for large and rapidly growing data sets.

Accessing data from memory is orders of magnitude faster than accessing data from disk. Accessing data from cache is even faster (a few nanoseconds versus up to 100 nanoseconds). The Intel Xeon processor E7 v2 family provides an exceptionally large on-die cache of up to 37.5 MB. Intel and SAP have optimized and tuned memory-to-cache data transfer processes throughout SAP HANA’s database engine to make sure this high-speed, high-volume data repository is used in the most efficient manner to accelerate overall database performance, especially for complex queries.

Because data is accessed so much faster, it must also be processed faster to avoid creating new performance bottlenecks. The Intel Xeon processor E7 v2 family provides up to 15 hyper-threaded cores per processor, which is up to 120 cores and 240 execution threads in an 8-socket platform. SAP HANA software is optimized to take full advantage of these parallel execution resources. Data is partitioned

and database computations are heavily parallelized to execute efficiently across large numbers of threads simultaneously.

Data placement is also optimized for speed and efficiency. Both the hardware and the software support Non-Uniform Memory Access (NUMA) technology, which synchronizes data placement and processor allocation for more efficient multi-core data access across large memory configurations.

Intel® Turbo Boost Technology adds to these advantages by enabling processor cores to run faster than the base operating frequency when thermals allow.18 This technology increases performance during peak workloads, without increasing energy consumption during lighter periods.

Intel and Intel architecture provide a number of additional resources that make software optimization easier and more effective for SAP HANA.

• Advanced instruction set extensions, such as Intel® Streaming SIMD Extensions (Intel® SSE), accelerate key computations and reduce the load on the platform.

• Highly-optimized software libraries, such as the Intel® Decimal Floating- Point Math Library, accelerate performance for certain complex, frequently used algorithms.

• Intel® Software Development Products, such as Intel® VTune™ Performance Analyzer and Intel® Parallel Amplifier, help Intel and SAP developers optimize code more effectively to deliver the best possible performance on Intel Xeon processors. To aid in software optimization efforts, the Intel® Performance Counter Monitor is integrated into SAP HANA and is available as part of SAP HANA’s internal management console. This built-in utility monitors fundamental performance metrics in real-time to identify bottlenecks so they can be addressed more efficiently.

The power and speed of SAP HANA running on the Intel Xeon processor E7 v2 family provides the foundation for another innovative and potentially transformative feature. SAP HANA software includes a computational engine located within the database. Rather than transferring large volumes of data to a separate application server for processing, data-intensive computations can be performed right in the database, so only the results need to be sent back to the application server.

This computing model not only reduces application latencies, but can also reduce the processing load that arises when large volumes of data are transferred from one system to another. Application development teams can use this strategy to compress the solution stack and embed analytics more deeply into real-time transactional computations for more efficient business operations.

A Mission-Critical Information Platform

The SAP HANA platform is specifically designed to support mission-critical enterprise requirements. The Intel Xeon processor E7 v2 processor family includes

Intel® Run Sure Technology,12 which extends the advanced reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) capabilities that have been built into earlier generations of Intel’s high-end processor line. Advanced error detection, correction, containment, and recovery features are extended throughout the platform to help keep mission-critical systems operating at peak efficiency and without interruption or data errors.

Intel and SAP have built on this foundation to integrate advanced error management throughout the solution stack. The hardware, firmware, operating system, and application all work together to recover from complex errors that cannot be corrected by the hardware or firmware alone. This provides a solid foundation for delivering the data integrity and system uptime needed for mission-critical environments.

When an uncorrectable data error in memory is detected by the processor, a signal is passed from the processor to the operating system (OS). The OS identifies which application is using the data location in question, in this case SAP HANA. The SAP HANA software can then assess

how the particular data element is being used and determine the best method for recovery, such as reloading a clean copy of the data from SSD or disk, or discarding an unused memory page if the data is not needed. Throughout this recovery process, the system and SAP HANA remain up and running with very minimal performance delay, typically a matter of seconds.

The SAP HANA platform extends resilience to the next level by providing flexible support for data replication, high availability, and disaster recovery. To enable quick recovery of the in-memory database with no data loss, database checkpoints are maintained on hard disks and transaction logs are maintained on high-speed solid state drives (SSDs).

The SAP HANA platform can also be deployed in a variety of high-availability configurations. Although options differ somewhat by vendor, both server failover and storage-based data mirroring are supported. Intel and SAP are working together and with the vendor community to drive down recovery times to a few seconds and, ultimately, microseconds.

SAP HANA’S PETASCALE CLOUD

In May 2012, Intel and SAP launched SAP HANA’s petascale cloud, a 100 TB in-memory system consisting of 100 servers based on the Intel Xeon processor E7 family. They have since expanded this cloud infrastructure to include more than 250 TB of main memory, 20,000 threads, and 10,000 cores, all capable of running a single instance of SAP HANA.

SAP HANA’s petascale cloud provides a testing environment for large, enterprise SAP customers and a laboratory for Intel and SAP research teams. These teams are working to develop and refine cloud solutions that provide customers with mission-critical levels of security, visibility, manageability, and control across both on-site and on-demand SAP software landscapes. The results will help SAP deliver better mission-critical solutions to its customers at lower costs. They will also help Intel target the most critical needs of enterprise customers in future generations of the Intel Xeon processor E7 family.

Get more information in this Intel and SAP video:

Strong security is essential in mission-critical environments. SAP HANA provides enterprise-class support for managing user access and authorization and provides transaction logs and reporting mechanisms for monitoring and auditing the environment. SAP HANA also supports data encryption on disk and across the network to protect sensitive data.

The Intel Xeon processor E7 v2 processor family provides hardware features that help to simplify and strengthen SAP HANA security.

• Intel® Platform Protection Technology with Intel® Trusted Execution Technology (Intel® TXT) can be used to cryptographically verify platform integrity, so the system can only launch into a “known good state.”19

• Intel Data Protection Technology with Advanced Encryption Standard New Instructions (AES-NI) and Secure Key accelerates and strengthens encryption to protect data more effectively without compromising the performance that is so essential in real-time business environments.20

Built for the Future

Scale to Support Extreme Data Requirements

The SAP HANA platform is built to support rapid growth in data volumes. For example, a single-instance SAP HANA system used to support SAP Business Suite applications can scale up to eight sockets (up to 120 cores and 12 TB of memory). As time goes on, Intel and SAP will continue to deliver increasingly scalable options.21

Some businesses need even greater scalability for data warehouses that combine operational data with many years of historical data. In this case, SAP NetWeaver BW can be deployed on a massively scalable hardware cluster running a single instance of SAP HANA software. Certified SAP HANA clusters with up to 56 nodes are available from multiple vendors today, and these solutions support

high-availability failover within the cluster. They also support real-time replication of data from any database to enable complete analyses based on all available data sources. This includes data replicated from new “big data” solutions based on Apache Hadoop* (see the sidebar, “Integrate Big Data into Your Real-time Business”).

To test performance and scalability for SAP HANA in a clustered environment, Intel and SAP ran a series of queries on a 16-node SAP HANA cluster housing 460 billion data records. The system delivered sub-second query performance for the majority of queries, and even the most complex queries, which operated across a full five-years of data, were completed in less than four seconds.22 Intel and SAP have informally tested much larger solutions and have so far encountered no insurmountable barriers to scalability.

Deploy On-Premise or On-Demand

The SAP HANA platform is available as a pre-integrated appliance for on- premise deployment and also as a cloud-based service.

As an appliance, SAP HANA reduces the hardware and software variability associated with build-your-own solutions. This approach helps to ensure consistent performance and simpler and more reliable implementation. It also accelerates innovation by allowing SAP to focus available development resources on a smaller range of platform environments across both on-site and on-demand solutions. In-memory database appliances for SAP HANA are available from a broad choice of vendors.

Cloud options for SAP HANA range from instant, self-serve solutions that you can have up and running in less than an hour to complete, enterprise-class solutions designed to meet the stringent requirements of large enterprises for hosting mission-critical data and applications. Cloud solutions are available directly from SAP and also from other cloud service providers.

technology(ies). Built-in reliability features available on select Intel® processors may require additional software, hardware, services and/or an Internet connection. Results may vary depending upon configuration. Consult your system manufacturer for more details.

13 Source: SAP14 SAP HANA provides a single view of a table to an application or a user, but underneath it includes an online transaction processing (OLTP)–optimized component, a BI-optimized component, and

a mechanism for moving data from one component to another, called a “delta merge.” If a BI query needs to act on recently committed OLTP data that has not yet been merged, the system might have to scan both the BI-optimized component and a small amount of OLTP data that is not yet optimized for BI. Since it is a small amount of data, it has a minor impact on overall performance. And since all data can be accessed directly from memory, performance for both OLTP and BI tends to be much faster than it would be using any traditional relational database, whether that database is optimized for OLTP or for BI.

16 On a 4-socket natively-connected platform: Intel® Xeon® processor E7 family supports 64DIMMS, max memory per DIMM of 32GB RDIMM; Intel® Xeon® processor E7 v2 family supports 96DIMMs, max memory per DIMM of 64 GB RDIMM. This enables a 3x increase in memory.

17 Data compression ratios are typically between 3x and 5x, and can be as high as 20x.18 Requires a system with Intel® Turbo Boost Technology. Intel Turbo Boost Technology and Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 are only available on select Intel® processors. Consult your PC manufac-

turer. Performance varies depending on hardware, software, and system configuration. For more information, visit http://www.intel.com/go/turbo.19 No computer system can provide absolute security. Requires an enabled Intel® processor, enabled chipset, firmware, software, may require a subscription with a capable service provider (may not

be available in all countries). Intel assumes no liability for lost or stolen data and/or systems or any other damages resulting thereof. Consult your Service Provider for availability and functionality. For more information, visit http://www.intel.com/go/anti-theft. Consult your system manufacturer and/or software vendor for more information.

20 No computer system can provide absolute security. Requires an enabled Intel® processor and software optimized for use of the technology. Consult your system manufacturer and/or software vendor for more information.

21 Although SAP HANA can be deployed on clustered architectures to support data warehouses of almost any size, transactional applications must currently be supported by SAP HANA running on a single system.
