FY2016 ANNUAL REPORT

Shift the power

About us

Her Justice identifies women with cases that would result

in serious injustice without legal help. Every day, our staff

screens clients, offering thousands of callers the legal advice

and information they need to proceed. In that way, Her

Justice matches the best legal services to each client and

brings the power of the private bar to some of the City’s

most vulnerable families, empowering low-income women

and children to avoid homelessness and overcome poverty

and abuse.

Her Justice specializes in connecting volunteer lawyers from

New York City’s premier firms with low-income women

who desperately need a lawyer to represent them in court.

All volunteer lawyers are assigned an experienced Her

Justice staff attorney mentor who is available throughout

the course of the representation to strategize, answer

substantive and procedural questions, review documents

before they are filed and provide referrals for social and

other services. Volunteers benefit from helping to protect

and stabilize some of the City’s most vulnerable women

and children, while also developing important legal skills

by appearing in court and single-handedly managing the

relationship with their client and opposing counsel.

For low-income women, legal counsel can make the

difference between long-term stability and extreme poverty,

even homelessness. Last year, our clients with financial

matters received on average a 75% increase in their income

post-representation. These results would not be possible

without a lawyer.

No other organization in the City connects as many volunteer

attorneys with low-income clients as Her Justice. We harness

the power of the private bar to serve those who need it

most, giving women and children the tools they need to

survive and thrive.

For over 23 years, Her Justice has ensured that low-income New York City women receive critical legal services to help them achieve safety, self-sufficiency and stability. What makes Her Justice unique is our ‘pro bono first’ model: by engaging the talent and resources of New York City’s law firms and corporations, we connect committed lawyers with low-income women and their children, including those who have suffered domestic violence, and immigrants isolated by language and culture.

Who we serve

The Her Justice multiplying effectThe unique Her Justice ‘pro bono first’ method of delivering legal services enables our small legal staff to leverage the power of the City’s private bar to serve more clients. Unlike traditional legal services organizations that directly represent most of their clients, Her Justice staff attorneys primarily act as mentors to volunteer attorneys. Our staff’s expertise reaches nearly 1,500 pro bono attorneys, who in turn represent thousands of clients—exponentially more than we could serve through direct representation alone.
