Everyone should have sufficient nutritious food to take care of their needs. The reality is that the world produces enough food, however many people still suffer from hunger. The latest FAO report indicates that more than 815

million people are suffering chronic undernourishment. These causes for the widespread hunger are all man-made, and include conflict, extreme weather events linked to climate change, economic slowdown and rapidly increasing overweight and obesity levels. Every year, World Food Day is celebrated annually on October 16th. The 2018 theme is: “Our Actions are our Future. A #ZeroHunger World by 2030 is possible”. In order to get to Zero Hunger, food is not enough. Providing food assistance can save lives, but the right nutrition at the right time can also help change lives and break the cycle of poverty. The experts on food & diet in our society are the Dietitian Nutritionists (DN). Dietitian Nutritionists can change consumers behavior towards a healthier diet and more sustainable eating and food pattern. Dietitian Nutritionists (DN) have a significant role to play in food sustainability and the preservation of the planet, and they are uniquely equipped to provide lifestyle therapy as the standard first line treatment to prevent and manage chronic diseases. It is the most economical and effective pathway to good health when delivered by qualified food and nutrition practitioners. Indeed, Dietitian Nutritionists (DNs) provide Medical Nutrition Therapy MNT for optimizing nutritional status as a cornerstone in the maintenance of health, well-being, disease management strategy that reduces chronic disease risk. MNT delays disease progression, enhances the efficacy of medical/surgical treatment, reduces medication use, and improves patient outcomes including quality of life. Most developed countries have a central authority that validates that a Dietitian Nutritionists is qualified to dispense dietary advice and is up to date with modern practices. Pakistan does not have this mechanism in place, and thus there are many unqualified 'so-called' nutritionist/dietitians in our society who spread inaccurate information that can damage your health. To overcome this, Pakistan needs to establish a that can National Nutrition Council manage policy and standards and ensure that only HEC approved dietitian nutritionist are hired in key posts. Without this, instead of reliable evidence-based studies being used for the education of stakeholders, dangerous diet fads and unverified practices will be relied on, which can damage the health of those who listen to the wrong sources. In addition to the establishment of a standards setting and enforcement body (the National Nutrition Council), I would strongly advocate that insurance companies reimbursement for services should adopt policies to provide of DNs. These services include "healthy diet counseling”, "obesity screening and counseling" and “medical nutrition therapy”, and by preventing dread diseases early, can not only improve the quality of life of their customers, but can also reduce the total medical bill that the insurance company would have to foot otherwise. Medical Nutrition Therapyinsurance coverage has a beneficial effect for society as it encourages clients who would otherwise not be able to afford it to seek early diet and lifestyle counseling and health screening. This can prevent serious medical conditions such as diabetes and under-nutrition related deficiency diseases. Doctors will be more interested in referring clients to DNs when they know their services are accepted by insurance. It provides a chance to help those who do not want or have the means to pay out-of-pocket costs, grow the DNs practice and brings much required dietary help within the reach of more people. The reality is that we must adopt a more sustainable lifestyle, work with others, share our knowledge and be willing to help to reach the #ZeroHunger goal. While millions go hungry, 672 million people globally suffer from obesity, and a further 1.3 billion are overweight. We can, and must, change this.
