this year,
giveGIFTSthat supportPEOPLE & the
PLANET
Since the organization’s start in 1997, Sustainable Harvest International (SHI) has planted more than 2.6 million trees and converted thousands of acres to sustainable uses; thereby saving tens of thousands of acres of tropical forest from slash-and-burn destruction.
SHI has worked with more than 1,850 families throughout Honduras, Panama, Belize and Nicaragua implementing alternatives to slash-and-burn farming, the leading cause of rainforest destruction in the region. More than 600 families have graduated from the SHI program and no longer need assistance.
ABOUT SHI
What is this photo? These colorful fruits are fully ripened cacao pods that have been split open and stacked. The beans were removed to be fermented and turned into chocolate!
As President of Sustainable Harvest International, the best part of my job is seeing the impact we have on the lives of struggling families in Central America and on the planet. I still get choked up every time I hear a program participant like Doña Briseida tell me how she used to feel like she didn’t matter and couldn’t even make a difference for her own children, but that after
a year of work with SHI she is feeding her children better, protecting the environment and setting an example for others in her community.
When you purchase a Gift of Hope from this catalog, you honor people in your life by contributing to a better world in their names. You also honor the efforts of people like Doña Briseida, who are building a decent life and healthy environment for their families. And as a bonus, you give yourself the gift of knowing you have done something wonderful for people you know, people you don’t know and our planet. It’s a win-win-win bargain!
Thank you for meeting your gift giving needs by helping us to continue planting hope, restoring forests and nourishing communities.

* Cacao is the bean used to make chocolate.
This Gift of Hope provides families with training and
seeds to grow organic vegetable gardens. Since malnutrition is a threat for many
families living in Central America, vegetable gardens
give children nutritious food to
eat and boost family income by providing
produce to sell.

PLANT ACHOCOLATEFOREST
Give a family seeds, nursery materials and
training to grow a multi-story plantation of crops such as organic cacao*, ginger, rosewood and bananas. Cacao is a valuable cash-crop
that can be grown with other crops in plots that mimic the natural forest.
These plantations provide families with a good income, mitigate
global warming and create wildlife habitat.
