Program Highlight:

I am excited to have the opportunity to highlight the Hilltop Volunteer Program. Since its formalization as a program roughly 13 years ago, it has grown to serve over 20 different Hilltop programs with a volunteer service force of 200 strong. The purpose of the volunteer program is to provide individuals with meaningful volunteer opportunities that not only support Hilltop’s mission, but also align with their interests, skills, and availability. Finding the “perfect marriage” be-tween volunteer and service ultimately enhances the services we provide to the community but in turn can increase volunteer satisfaction and retention as well. Successfully managing volunteers throughout the organization definitely takes a team approach. Hilltop is a huge organization and although I take pride in my ability to multi-task, I could never do the program or our volunteers justice without the support of our service area volunteer coordinators and program liai-sons. Their role takes passion and commitment to ensure our volunteers are re-ceiving the onboarding, training, and support they need to be successful in their positions. Let me introduce you to the team:

Volunteers are now more than ever a part of our organization’s strategic plan for the future. Throughout our organization, volunteers continue to pro-vide many vital support services including administrative, companionship, men-toring, transportation, crisis intervention and much more. In addition to all these wonderful people who support the volunteer program, I have to thank the incredible volunteers who make the magic happen at Hilltop every day. For all of you, I am truly grateful.

2019 Volunteer Satisfaction

Survey Results

Hilltop volunteers reported positive ratings regarding their volunteer experience on a recent survey conducted by Vol-

unteer Services.

Volunteers were asked to rate their volunteer experience with the program they volunteer through at Hilltop. Volun-

teers were given the opportunity to submit the survey by mail or online, with the option to be anonymous or to include

their contact information, not only so Volunteer Services could follow-up with them, but to be included in a drawing

for one of four $25 gift cards. A total of 149 surveys were mailed to Hilltop volunteers. Of the 149 surveys mailed, 62

were returned. There were 8 completed on Survey Monkey and 54 completed on paper. The survey response rate was

42%. Of the 62 volunteers who responded, 52 reported they volunteered in Grand Junction, 5 in Delta, and 5 in

Montrose.

Program Volunteer Experience

Volunteers who completed the survey were asked to rate their volunteer experience for the program they serve in. The

volunteer was asked to rate nine statements regarding their volunteer experience on a four point scale (4 Agree, 3

Somewhat Agree, 2 Somewhat Disagree and 1 Disagree).

Although the majority of volunteers reported positive responses regarding their volunteer experience with Hilltop,

supervisor communication, position specific orientation and training were identified as areas for improvement.

Volunteer Services would like to thank all the volunteers who participated in the annual survey. Congratulations

to Romaine Webb, Stefanie Suppes-Goodsell, Linda VanHouten and Sandy Perkins for being our lucky

survey drawing winners.

Please rate your volunteer experience for the program you serve in.

Volunteer Highlight: Jo Ann Rezen,

Volunteer Services As a retired educator volunteering at

Hilltop and Hope West has broadened

my knowledge and given me rewarding

experiences which include working with

amazing, talented individuals and acquiring

wonderful lifetime friends. It is so much fun helping out, learning more, de-

veloping new skills, and being a part of programs that aim to help others as

life challenges occur.

Being retired also allows for traveling to explore our beautiful United States,

watching soap operas, lunching with friends, reading and having a blessed

life. Thanks Hilltop for allowing me to be part of your wonderful organiza-

tion.

Jim Mello

Ken Kitzman Volunteer of Excellence Award Recipient

In 2018, Jim Mello was given the Ken Kitzman Volunteer of Excellence Award.

Jim has volunteered four years with Supporting Our Seniors (SOS), a free trans-

portation service for homebound seniors age 60 and older. Jim takes clients in

need to medical appointments and other errands. SOS coordinator, Tiffany Waugh

says, “Jim is super humble and cares deeply about our SOS clients. To make sure

everyone can get where they need to go, he often arranges his schedule on Tues-

day and Wednesday. Jim is really funny and a favorite with clients.” Frequent rid-

er, Joyce says, “I never went out much because it was so hard to get around. I ei-

ther had to pay for a taxi or the bus, but thanks to Jim I can get out to the grocery

store or pharmacy when needed.”

Tiffany Waugh is constantly amazed at how low key and humble Jim can be. Upon receiving the Hilltop Mis-

sion Award, Jim worried he hadn’t seemed grateful enough. He called Tiffany back just to reiterate how thank-

ful he was and how much his volunteering with SOS meant to him. In 2018, Jim drove 2,669 miles and over

240 hours for SOS, in addition to the 340 hours he volunteers with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Jim is a

shining example of the important role volunteers play at Hilltop and in our community. Congratulations Jim!

2019 Volunteer Mission Award Recipient Alicia Hampton, Latimer House

Alicia Hampton has been a volunteer with the Domestic Violence parenting

group for over three years. She brings with her a professional background in

school counseling and is an invaluable support to program staff as a resource

during groups. She is incredibly reliable and enthusiastic about group dynam-

ics. “It is rewarding to feel like I make a difference in the lives of others by of-

fering a safe place for parents to seek support and talk openly about challenges

they have. It is so cool to watch how they gain confidence and share their ex-

pertise with others in the group,” says Alicia.

“She is a warm and wonderful person, and our clients benefit from her

knowledge, her experience and especially her gentle presence. I feel so much

more confident that we are providing quality services to our clients when she and I can both be there; having a

second person in the groups helps people feel less vulnerable,” says group facilitator, Joanie Leinbach.

Thank you Alicia and congratulations on your award!
