Continued from front cover...Brian Farrow, Lifeboat Operations manager atSheringham RNLI, said the gesture has left thelifeboat community scratching their heads. “I was upstairs in a meeting when our volunteer shop manager, Anne Little, came in with a carrier bag. It was only when the twoof us reached inside andpulled out a handful of the postcards did we realisequite what they were.

‘They are absolutely beautiful. The care andskill that went into makingthem is obvious – we feltlike we were holding a real piece of British history. But we have no ideawhere they came from orwho they belonged to.’

Production of embroideredsilk postcards peaked during 1914-18 war, as

the format proved especially popular withBritish soldiers. The hand-embroidery isthought to have been carried out in domestichouses as ‘out-work’ by civilians in France andBelgium, and in the UK by Belgian refugees.

Among the collection donated to SheringhamRNLI are postcards bearing Christmas

greetings, a woman in traditional Portuguese dress, and a star made up ofdifferent Allied nations flags, which isdated 25 December 1916.

The RNLI now plans to make enquirieswith auction houses to see how much thepostcards might be worth. A popular internet auction website shows similaritems ranging from a few pence each upto around £30 for some items.

Anne Little, Sheringham RNLI shopmanager, said ‘From the research I have done I understand postcards wereoften sent home

by soldiers who, tragically, never returned from the war. In that sense the postcards were probably very precious to some individuals, which makesit all the more poignant that they were given tous. Obviously the owner wanted them to dosome good and help to save lives at sea.

‘But be they worth pennies or pounds, the identity of the donor remains a mystery to us. We would like to express our thanks and gratitude to whoever donated them. Thank youso much for thinking of us and for giving ussuch a precious collection.’

Battle of the ClubsA battle took place between representatives ofthree Norfolk clubs on 16 March. WymondhamPhotographic Society and Brancaster CameraClub were entertained by, and did battle with,North Norfolk Photographic Society.

The 'umpire' was a well-known East AnglianPhoto judge, Alan Sarsby, who says “I havebeen a keen photographer since my teenageyears. I now have grey hair — you can do the

arithmetic yourself”. He is a multi-talented man - as well as teachingphotography, he also runs a business skills course, publishes booksabout business and is a member of two camera clubs.

The contest was in two parts. First, printed images were presented, eightfrom each club and then projected digital images – again eight each.

After the 24 prints had been judged (a quarter of them receiving 10 outof 10 marks) the Brancaster club were leading by half a mark from boththe other clubs. This all changed after the projected images, whenWymondham did best and ended up overall winners by 143.5 overNorth Norfolk PS with 142 and Brancaster with 68.5. Again, six of the24 got top marks - very high quality photography by all three clubs.

Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are held on the firstand third Wednesdays each month from 7.30pm in Holt CommunityCentre. For further details please contact the club Secretary, Judith Wells at [email protected] or visit the club website at www.nnphotosoc.org/.

KELLING PROBUS CLUBKelling Probus Club held its AGM on 17 March at the Dales HotelUpper Sheringham, Twenty three members attended.

After a tasty lunch and good fellowship, the Club held its Annual General Meeting.

Mike Bennet our Chairman welcomed members to the AGM and calledupon Tony O'Shea, the Club Treasurer to give his report.

Tony reported that the club was financially sound and that the year hadseen the balance in hand grow a little. He proposed that the annual subshould be reduced to £15and the joining fee to £10. The motion wascarried unanimously.

Ken Murray then gave his Secretary's report, He stated that it had been ayear of stability and, despite losing three members, the Club remainedwith a membership of 28 and attendance at lunches was always 20+. Ken felt the reason for this was the good standard of lunches and a realgood team of guest speakers in the past year. He thanked the Hotel stafffor all their service and help.

Chairman Mike then thanked all the members and officers for a really enjoyable year and stated that he felt the Club was very well organizedand healthy. He then handed over the Chairman’s chain to Dave Vickeryfor the year 2016/17.

Chocolate FondantDesserts

Fairtrade for Sheringham As we have been a Fairtrade Town for nearly two years the Fairtrade Foundation will require an update of our progress in the summer. With this in mind we will be asking all the shops, businesses, groups, schools and Churches whether they are selling or using Fairtrade products. You were very helpful when we did this in 2013/14, and we look forward to seeing you in the next week or two.

Many thanks,The Fairtrade for Sheringham Group.

By the time you read this our new Orangery willbe open and bracing itself for a deluge of guestsenjoying our rather wonderful Afternoon Teas, drinks before a lovely dinner and Pimms on thelawns throughout the summer. The new roomwill be a great addition to the Grove and welook forward to showing you around.

This chocolate fondant dessert is quickly becoming a firm favourite on the Spring à la carte and has the benefit of being completely gluten free too. It’s nice and indulgent for all of those who deserve a rich, chocolatey pudding – go on, treat yourself! Ingredients• 50g butter, plus extra for greasing• 50g 70% cocoa chocolate, roughly chopped• 1 large egg

• 1 egg yolk• 2 tbs brown sugar• 1 1/2 tbs cocoa, plus extra for dustingInstructions1. Brush melted butter inside two dariole

moulds. Pop in the fridge and, after a while, remove and brush with melted butter again. Dust with cocoa, turning the moulds to ensure the moulds are well coated.

2. Melt the chocolate and butter together in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. Stir gently to combine well into a dark silky liquid and set aside to cool a little.

3. Beat the egg, egg yolk and sugar together for at least five minutes, until the mixture is thick and moussey, and leaves a little trail before slowly sinking back into the rest of the mixture.

4. Carefully fold in the melted chocolate and butter. Sift the cocoa over the top and fold in carefully.

5. Divide the mixture between the prepared moulds and leave in the fridge for up to 6

hours before cooking.6. Preheat a baking tray in the oven to 200c.7. Place the fondants on top of the hot tray

and bake 9–12 minutes and leave for a minute before turning out into a bowl.

Saucepan versus SoupmakerA ‘Saucepan versus Soupmaker’ competition will be one of the highlightsof an upcoming Soup and Pudding evening in Aylsham Town Hall on 23April at 7.30pm.

Organised by Slow Food Aylsham, the event will invite guests to choosebetween soup made in the traditional way and soup made in a ‘new-fangled’ machine. Local chef Derrol Waller will be on hand with hissaucepan while Slow Food’s Jill Willis will tend the machine.

Enough soup will be produced for all guests to have a bowl full, togetherwith roll and butter. A selection ofdessert puddings will follow, made bySlow Food Aylsham members, and accompanied by a choice of custard orcream. This is certainly an event whenthe diet is best left at home!

Chair of Slow Food Aylsham, Mo Anderson-Dungar, says she is reallylooking forward to the event, whichwill mirror one held seven years ago.“Back in 2009,” she says, “Slow Foodheld a very similar event which attracted a large audience and saw ourmembers come up with a fabulous selection of puddings.

Since then, our Spring event has been a foodie quiz night but we decidedto revisit the Soup and Puddings this year, with the added twist of theSaucepan versus Soupmaker competition. It should be a great fun eveningand we hope all the family will come along.”

Tickets for the evening, which is supported by electrical retailer J B Postle, are just £7, available in Aylsham from Barnwells Newsagents,Carousel Chocolates or the Market Place fruit and veg stall. Alternatively, phone the ticket line on 07519 361 812.

A selection of delicious puddingsmade by Slow Food Aylshammembers will be served

Dear Margaret,My Good Samaritan appeared on the cold, blustery morningof Saturday 19 March.I was collecting outside the old Post Office for the MarieCurie nurses. A lady stopped to give a donation and asked if I wascold. ‘Only my hands – I forgot to bring my gloves!’Moments later this kind, unknown lady reappeared bearing a pair ofheavy, woollen mittens. She had gone straight to the nearest charityshop and bought me a pair of brand new hand knitted mittens. A Godsend! I wish I had asked her name. But this was a kindness always to be re-membered.Thank you so much, my Samaritan.Yours sincerelyMaggie Gould

Dear Margaret,Sheringham in Bloom is grateful to have been the recipient ofa generous donation of £1,000. The Sheringham Social Club, previously known as the Ex- servicemen and Sportsman’s Club, ceased operation in 2012 andhave kindly donated their residual balance to various charities, mainly in Sheringham. Sheringham in Bloom committee is very grateful for this donationand plan to use it to replace the damaged planters at the town signson Weybourne and Holt Roads. A sign acknowledging this fundingwill be put on the planters. We are at the time of year when we approach all our sponsors andour letters will be going out very shortly. Sponsorship money is usedsolely to provide a good display of flowers in our planters throughoutthe year and we hope this helps to make Sheringham a truly attractive town. If anyone is interested in sponsoring one of our displays they can start from a little as £25, and if you would ratherjust make a small donation this would also be gratefully received. Thank you to everyone who supports us and we hope the comingsummer will be a colourful one.Joan Thame01263 825242

The RAOB is one of the largest fraternal organisations in theUnited Kingdom. The Order was started in 1822, and isknown as the Buffs to members.

On Tuesday 15March at 7pmthe SittingPrimo, TonyWiles, of theCromer & District RAOBpresented the Dialysis Department at Cromer

Hospital with a cheque for £3,500. In his speech Tony commented“when my wife Betty, found that she needed to go onto a dialysis machine in order to remove unwanted waste products from her blood, due to the kidneys being damaged or dysfunctional, I suddenly realisedhow important the Dyalisis Dept & the dialysis machines are. At a meeting of the Cromer & District Royal Antediluvian Order of the Buffaloes, I suggested that our charity for 2015/ 2016 should be to raisemoney for the Cromer Hospital, Dialysis Department. The end productof this meeting was, after much hard work by our members & friends,

that we raised £3,500. It is now my great pleasure on behalf of theCromer & District RAOB, to hand over to you this cheque for £3,500.

Nursing Sister Janet Dickinson, received the cheque on behalf of theDialysis Dept.

On Sunday 13 March therewas a rapturous and joyoussound coming from a tiny corner of Cremer Street inSheringham as Age ConcernNorth Norfolk and the GoodIntentions Fundraising Team(G.I.F.T) celebrated local talent. The Age Concern daycentre was transformed into a mini theatre for the day asbudding performing talent thatspanned the generations cametogether to put on a show of song and dance.

There was stunning vocalists, dance troupes, from the highly regarded Marlene’s School of Dance and a family of talented musical performers; they were the MSD Dancers, Pete Phillips, Brian Brown and the Volko Trio respectively, amongst others. They allcontributed immensely to a wonderful andmemorable atmosphere and morning of entertainment. It was all part of the annualG.I.F.T. Talent show where local performershave an opportunity to audition for other local

shows throughout theyear.

Everyone at Age Concern NorthNorfolk and G.I.F.T. would like tothank everyone who participated andsupported the event as there weresome truly amazing performancesand we were all amazed at the incredibly high standard of entries. The Overall winners were TheVolko Trio, comprising of Dad(Christopher) on the piano, Hectoraged 10 on the vibraphone and

Calypso aged 7 on the drums and they live inHolt. The father is originally from Paris. Theirjive performance of ‘Happy’ by PharrellWilliams on piano, drums and xylophone hadeveryone foot tapping and dancing in the aislesand also localsinger MelanieBrown who iswell known tomany as the facebehind the FitTogether walks.

Organiser, Yvonne Tiffany, from G.I.F.T. said "I was very pleased with the high standard againthis year, and think we have found somethingspecial with the talent from The Volko Trio"(they are on You Tube under The Volko Trio).

The event is all part of a yearlong campaign to help raise funds for Age Concern North Norfolk, a small local charity, that was chosen

by G.I.F.T. as a deservingcharity to support throughout2016 and all funds will goback into the charities muchneeded and well used serviceslike day care on Cremer Streetand the Befriending Scheme.

The new Inheritance Tax Residence Nil RateBand (RNRB) has it roots back in 2007when the Conservative opposition said thatthey were in favour of increasing the NilRate Band (NRB) to £1M.

Although newspaper headlines have suggested that the new RNRB has that effect, this is very far from correct. A fewlucky people will in 2020/21 have a combination of nil rate bands that add up to £1M, but they will be very much in theminority.

Because the new RNRB is very closely targeted being tied to homes and only available to lineal descendants, it can workin an illogical and unfair fashion. The ordinary NRB is being frozen at £325,000 to pay for the RNRB, whereas otherwise itwould have started to increase from the end of 2017/18.

The new RNRB has to be claimed by the deceased’s executors - it is not automatic.

‘Closely inherited’ also needs carefulscrutiny. ‘Closely’ means that it must pass toa lineal descendent; or to a spouse or civilpartner of a lineal descendent. ‘Children’ includes step-children, foster children and

children who have been adopted by a thirdparty. ‘Closely’ does not include co-habitees,dependent or vulnerable family members.

It is possible to vary a Will so as to becomeeligible for the RNRB.

Only certain sorts of trust will be eligible forthe RNRB and this produces unfairness andinconsistency, particularly where there areminor beneficiaries. Specialist advice is particularly necessary here.

The RNRB will start at £100,000 in 2017/18and will rise by £25,000 yearly, until itreaches £175,000 in 2020/21. Thereafter itwill increase in line with the ConsumerPrices Index.

Debts charged on the residence are deducted, so only the net equity gets theRNRB. It might therefore beneficial toswitch secured debts to other assets.

Above £2M the RNRB is withdrawn by £1for every £2 in excess of £2M exemptionsand reliefs are ignored.

Spouses may wish to leave assets away fromthe survivor to prevent their aggregated estates exceeding £2M. Lifetime gifts areexempt in working out the value of the estate

and this gives great opportunities forclever planning, including ‘deathbed’ gifts.

The ‘downsizing’ rules are complex and somewhat arbitrary. It is vital to keep all thepaperwork to provide the evidence neededby HMRC in the event of death.

Once this new and extremely complicatedrelief arrives in April 2017, the need to takespecialist advice will never have beengreater.

Mostof us will not be lucky enough to travel toSouth America to enjoy the event first hand orto enjoy the spectacular noise, colour andsmells; however, in March, a taste of Brazilcame to London. The Princess of Wales Conservatory in Kew Gardens was filled with the exotic flora of the world’s undisputed capital of carnival as the annual Orchids Festival celebrated the incredibly rich biodiversity ofthe planet’s fifth largest country, Brazil.

This vast country is home to more than 37,000 plant species that grow in six distinct ecological areas. Over 18,000 of these plantsare endemic to Brazil and grow nowhere elseon earth.

The horticultural team at Kew created a stunning display of breath taking beauty thattransported visitors to the tropics. There were

orchids suspended from the ceiling and walkthrough arches bedecked with instantly recognisable equatorial favourites such as Phalaenopsis and Oncidium. Two towering‘Rainforest Tree’ pillars showcased colourfulAnthurium and Bromeliaceae while in the conservatory’s pond, dancing floral figureshelped to capture the spirit of Carnival. On a cold and windy March afternoon it was theperfect escape from the winter blues.

It is of course very easy nowadays to buy orchids from a garden centre or supermarket togrow as houseplants. Many people start withthe Phalaenopsis orchid also known as themoth orchid, which comes in a variety ofshapes, sizes and colours but all have the samegrowth habit, which is three to five or more flatfleshy leaves, with one or two flowering stemsgrowing from between them, and each stemcan hold from six to over a dozen beautifulblooms.

The thickness of the leaf of an orchid generallyindicates the climate it needs - thick fleshyleaved orchids are warm growers from the tropics, whilst orchids with thin and more elongated leaves usually like it on the coolerside. The cymbidium is a good example of cool growing orchids.

Cool growing orchids will burn in full sun, and do best in a temperature range of 50 to

65 degrees. The

cymbidium actually enjoys being outside forthe summer, but make sure it cannot be eatenby pests or absolutely soaked in wet weather.

Where is the best place to keep an orchid? Well for warm growing Phalaenopsis, find anice well lit window, ideally facing east orwest, with some shade from the midday sun, perhaps provided by a net curtain. Make surethat the night temperature does not fall below55 degrees or the plant will suffer. Water thoroughly about once every seven days insummer and about once every ten days in winter. Always water from the top and don’t let the pot stand in water. Do not overfeed, use a quarter strength solution of somethinglike Tomorite if you do not wish to buy a specific orchid fertiliser.

If looked after properly orchids will live andflower once or twice a year for many years tocome.

North Norfolk District Council fund helps communities meet their ambitions

It’s been a busy month for North Norfolk District Council’s Big Society Fund, with threeseparate openings of part-funded projects in thespace of a few days.

The Fund announced its latest round of grantslast month but there has also been a flurry offinal project delivery across North Norfolk withthree very different projects officially launched. Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North NorfolkDistrict Council and Cabinet Member for BigSociety, was asked to officially open a new playarea off Gordon Road, Melton Constable, on 19 March.

In June 2015 a Big Society Fund grant of£5,000 was awarded to purchase an outdoortable tennis table and accessible birds nestswing as part of the wider play area project. On the same day, Cllr FitzPatrick also attendedthe opening of Holt Pavilion, where a newkitchen, toilets, office and storage with disabledaccess plus new changing rooms for both players and officials have been created. The Big Society Fund contributed £10,000 in 2013towards a six-figure target.

And on 10 March, Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett,Deputy Leader at North Norfolk District Council, officially launched the North Walsham

Good Neighbour Scheme website at an event inNo 1 Market Place, North Walsham, home ofArts North Norfolk.

In September the scheme was awarded a BigSociety Fund grant which enabled the creationof the website to act as another channel for contact from volunteers, requests for assistanceand donations, as well as promoting the schemeto a much wider public.

Cllr FitzPatrick said “It’s always very satisfyingto consider and agree grant funding applicationsfor local groups doingsuch excellent work.

“But it’s also incredibly rewardingon a whole other levelto see those hard-working groups deliver the end resultand view the physical delivery of plans created by the community, for the community.”

NNDC's Big SocietyFund offers grants of up to £15,000 tovoluntary andcommunity

organisations based in North Norfolk.

Since the fund started in 2012, over £1,171,208has been awarded to more than 147 communityprojects.

If you have an idea or a project that you wish to develop and apply for funding, you are encouraged to speak to your local councillor and get in touch with the Council (via SoniaShuter tel. 01263 516173, [email protected])or visit www.northnorfolk.org/bigsocietyfund

A few weeks ago I wrote about the little blind cat that was handed into our careand had been re-homed with one of our fosterers. We knew at the time that shehad serious health problems which could not be treated and just wanted to makesure her final weeks were spent in a loving home where she had a nice warmbed, food and water but, most importantly of all, someone to love and care forher. Sadly this dear little cat’s health deteriorated and a final visit to the vets hadto be made. Although not with them very long, her family was sad to lose her as she was such a loving little cat.We also wrote recently about the importance of micro chipping cats but mentioned that, if details of the owner are not recorded or kept up to date, it cancause problems as was evident when Harvey, a stray cat, was handed into ourcare recently by David at Bridge Vets. He had been taken into the surgery as he was in a dreadful condition and, as well as needing a dental, his coat was so matted it had to be shaved. The concerned family who took him to the Bridge would have offered him a home if his owners could not be found but, unfortunately, a blood test indicated he could be FIV positive and, as they haveother cats, this option was ruled out. More blood tests will be taken once he isin better condition. As is routine practice nowadays, he was scanned to checkfor a micro chip and a chip was located and the number taken. Unfortunately,we now have two challenges as the chip had not been registered and the indications are that it was purchased in America. We are therefore trying toidentify the company who made the chip as they may be able to provide information as to where and when it was purchased. Although we do not thinkthat in this instance we will have any success, we will do what we can to findthe original owner. Harvey is not a young cat and at present does not look hisbest, but is very friendly and loving. If his next blood test confirms he is FIVpositive, he will need an indoor home either as the only cat in the household or one with other FIV positive cats.If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is forvouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (orhave any other queries) please giveStephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the catsbefore giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular catis being fostered.Cats Protection North Walsham is now onFacebook and will keep people advised offorthcoming events, news of our cats andother activities. Information on cats and kittens for re-homing can still be foundon our website and enquiries for them should still be via Stephanie.

Spring has Sprung at AnimalMagic Dog ClubSpring is officially here, the daffodils are in bloom and lambs are appearing inthe fields. But did you know that if your dogeats or licks any part of the daf-fodil – the bulb, plant or flower, they will ingest an alkaloid calledLycorine which can make yourdog very poorly indeed. Other spring plants such as tulips, hyacinths, crocuses and lily of thevalley are also toxic and youshould seek help from your vet if you think you dog has ingested any of theseplants. It is a cruel trick of nature that some of the most beautiful, colorfulspringtime plants pose a deadly temptation to the four-legged members of yourfamily. The winter term at Animal Magic is almost at an end and we have a fun packedtimetable of classes to look forward to during spring.Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham is a fun, family orientated club offering a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs. Weather with Ned NimbusApril, May & June Weather Predictions April will continue the theme, with a mix of weather and temperatures oscillating above and below average and it will not be until we are well intoMay that we will see a few much warmer days. There is nothing to suggest thatthere will be any prolonged fine weather.June is likely to continue the balance starting to become established in May,where the percentage of fine days over changeable conditions starts to erodebut, as we get some very warm days, the risk of heavy showers will definitelyincrease. Throughout May and June there will be some marked daily variationsin temperature. This summer is also worth watching, as conditions will be at hand to generatesome intense rainfall although this might be further south over Europe. Is thisthe start of our promised Mediterranean climate/summer? No. Just the oddMediterranean day. Ned Nimbus

DOT TherapyThe No 1 Anti aging breakthrough of the decade is available at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic.

*Powerfully reverses 5-10 years of skin aging, wrinkles, sun spots.*Dramatically reduces old acne and trauma related scarring.*Minimises risk of future development of skin cancers.According to many doctors, this is a skin-resurfacing treatment known as CO2 laser therapy. If you have moderate to severe wrinkles, age spots, melasma or acne scarring, if you wish toimprove tone, texture and colour of your skin then this is the treatment to have. It beats anyother non CO2 laser skin rejuvenation technique.

Although ‘gold-standard’ conventional CO2 laser resurfacing achieves great results somepeople do not want to have the procedure repeated because of a longer recovery period.

To avoid the risks of complications and reduce recovery time recently new technology calledfractional laser resurfacing has been developed. This truly is a remarkable breakthrough. Herethe laser beam is broken up into many small micro beams. which are separated so that whenthey strike the skin surface small areas of the skin between the beams are left intact. Thesesmall areas or bridges of untreated skin promote a rapid recovery and healing with less risk ofcomplications.

Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCAAM, Medical Director and Laser Surgeon ofColtishall Cosmetic Clinic has more than ten years experience with lasers. He has had one

to one training from pioneers of this technology in Italy and has reproduced excellent results in his clinic.

Dr Gheyi focuses on providing results oriented, cost effective and safe treatments such as IPL Photofacial™, Laser treatments for skin rejuvenation and thread veins, injectable wrinkle treatments, dermalfillers, laser hair removal and laser and non laser cosmetic surgery. Inaddition to these chemical peels, diamond microdermabrasion, LEDskin rejuvenation and acne, rosacea and hyperhidrosis treatments arealso available.

Conservative councillors have voted down plans to cut delays in dealingwith planning issues in North Norfolk.

North Norfolk District Council Liberal Democrat Councillors called for more staff to be appointed to deal with a large backlog of caseswhere developments had allegedly taken place without planning permission. The move was rejected by Conservative Councillors who run the Council.

At the Council's Overview & Scrutiny Committee, Liberal DemocratCouncillor Eric Seward called on the Council to spend an extra£100,000 on its enforcement work. This came after the Council had received a financial report showing an expected surplus of £876,000 for the current financial year.

Councillor Seward told the Committee that little more than one full timeofficer could not deal with a backlog of some 250 cases. Also, in the last three years the Council had not fined anyone who let their dogs persistently foul public foot paths or dropped litter in public places asthere were no staff to deal with it.

Councillor Seward was supported by fellow Liberal Democrat Councillor Virginia Gay who said that timely enforcement work was essential to the good reputation of the District Council.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Sarah Butikofer said it was a shame such a modest proposal that would have improved council services was rejected by the ruling Conservative group.

Call for more planning enforcement rejected

Woodfordes Brewery has announced theirsupport for this year’s Cromer SoapboxDerby, which being staged on Sunday 7 August, with the first cart away at 1pm. Using the same venue as last year, along theA149 from East Coast Motors to MorrisonsPetrol Station, this year’s course will have asteeper start ramp, higher jumps and a tighterchicane.

The Sporting Car Club of Norfolk will be providing the timing and scrutineering for theevent and are planning to bring along a numberof cars for a static display.

Woodfordes are inviting pubs from across the county to take up the challenge, with thewinning pub and driver and second placeddriver in the ‘Pub Class’ being presented with Woodfordes Ales.

Area rep, Julie Hawksworth, took control oflast year’s winning entry from the White Horsein Cromer, saying “this is the first time I have

been in control of asoapbox, although I have stood on one a few times” She continued “I am hopingfor a new company carlater this year andmight suggest that thisis the ideal vehicle, although I would needthe occasional pushwhen going uphill”.

The White Horse,Cromer took the prizefor the fastest car in lastyear’s event and wenton to sell their cart at acharity auction, raisingfunds for the Norfolkand Norwich NeonatalIT Unit (NICU). They have already raised inexcess of £17,000 and are well on their way totheir target of £20,000.

White Horse owner Annie Kemp said “we aredelighted with the support we have received and are veryconfident that we willsoon reach our target”.

Mike Quenby, the newowner of last year’swinning cart, is planning to enter thecart in this year’s eventand his grandson Owenis already in training.Asked if he could win the event he said “wehave the best cart from 2015 so we must be inwith a very good chance”.Peter MacMillan, last year’s winning driver, isconfident that their new design will be evenfaster and is looking forward to the day. He

said “I can’t wait for the event and I am certainthat we will be on the top step of the podium”.

He continued “We are already underway withthe new design and are lucky to have the same

designer as last year.Steven Harbour did agreat job and we arevery pleased with thework so far”.

Carnival ChairmanTony Shipp said “entries are alreadycoming in and we havehad interest from as faraway as Northampton,so we are looking

forward to a bigger entry than ever - and withWoodfordes agreeing to support our ‘PubClass’, we are sure that there will be plenty of racing and keen competition”.

Your local football club has seen a lot of changes in the last fewyears. We now have a thriving youth section consisting of 11 teamsall playing under the ‘Shannock’ badge between U7s right throughto U18s.

We have a very busy ‘Mini Kickers’ for Under 5 and 6 year olds. Those old enough will move to form the new Under 7s under manager Robert Pratt for the 2016/17 season.

All three adultteams haveworked hard this yearunder managers RoyBevis, Adam Warrickerand Graham Websterand their respective assistants. Both the Firstand Reserves are wellplaced in their leagues to look for promotion. The Under 18s are this

season mid table, higher than everbefore in this competitive leagueand are now working on their second stage of a cup run. Severalplayers from the Under 18s overthe last four years now play in thethree adult sides.

Across the Club ‘Fast ForwardSports’ Ben Price has been helpingthis season with some training

sessions for all teams including the adult sides. His presence at training and some matches has made a big difference within the club. Ben bringsconsistency throughout the teams, new training ideas and support for themanagers.

To run a club of this size means a lot of volunteers are needed - managers, groundsmen, committee members, caterers, running the gate, linesmen, fund raising, sponsors. The Club can only be as good as the people behindit. Extra hands needed? Ofcourse!

As we approach the end of theseason for all teams, the Clublooks to next season. Someyouth teams need more playersas they go from 5 to 9 a side inSeptember. The Under 10s runby manager Vinnie Peart is looking to recruit a few newplayers. This team train on aTuesday at 5.30pm.

For info on all teams and how you can help please contact Sally on 01263588334 or email [email protected]
