Course Description: Bob will begin this workshop by giving a detailed description of the major saddle repairs and how to accomplish them. Later, Bob will demonstrate some of these skills on actual saddles. Students are encouraged to bring a saddle in need of repair with them. Bob will address these saddles and how to repair them, however on-site repairs will not be made. Thursday, May 16, 8 am - 12 pmCourse Description: Learn the principles of over-all cinch design, style considerations, and terminology. Darin uses a progressive approach to help students become familiar with specific design techniques. Under Darin’s patient instruction each student will practice the basic movements/methods of cinch detailing and needling-off, using a variety of fibers, to produce designs on two pre-strung wall-hanging “samplers”. Discussion and examples are presented to demonstrate various applications of this distinctively western tradition. Keep in mind that the elegant results of cordage techniques can be employed as a form of filigree in an array of items such as boots, belts, hat bands and furniture. Special emphasis will be placed on optimizing comfort and health of cinches and girths for your Equine. This workshop is highly recommended as preparation for the “Mohair Vaquero Cinches: Make Your Own” and “Mohair Breast Collars: Creating Your Own” workshops allowing the student’s mind to settle into the process and movements, easing you more comfortably into the greater challenges of “stringing”, or “warping”, the cinch body. Cord Cinches: Styles, Width & Fiber – $80 Darin Alexander
Course Description: This lecture considers several finer points of cinches, drawing from historical reference and contemporary style examples. Powerpoint images and actual cinches are displayed to demonstrate the influence that quality of yarns/cordage have on the handling during the making of and end-use of cinches. Topics like “stretch” and importance of width are addressed and myths dispelled. Benefits of fiber content identification for consumer protections are presented along with behind-the-scenes research for determining fair-market value pricing as necessary to maintain and improve cord cinches. Primary emphasis is placed on what is most appropriate for health and comfort of the horse and mule. Students will receive a cord/yarn sample card to keep which is helpful in identifying fiber contents of contemporary cinch cords ($20.00 retail value).Materials to Bring: Notebook, pencil, and a few sheets of graph paper.

This will be approached in 3 phases. 1st–A discussion of the muscular and skeletal structure of a horse’s back as it relates to the saddle tree. 2nd–Fitting a variety of trees to a live horse. This is a hands-on approach with all students encouraged to participate. 3rd–Making minor adjustments to tree fit by shimming with leather. Ground Work & Saddle Seat – $65 Pete Gorrell
Course Description: The saddle seat should not only be comfortable to the rider but is critical to the placement of the rider and therefore to the balance of the rider to the horse. This is important in respect to the ability to communicate to the horse through balance as well as reducing the risk of soring the horse’s back. This workshop will address reading the tree to determine how the ground seat needs to be installed to achieve the desired goals. A variety of ground seat patterns will be shown and compared. There’ll also be a discussion of the difference between a man’s and a woman’s seat and what can be done to make this seat gender specific. Two different methods of installing ground seats will be dem-onstrated. There will be a discussion and critique of each. Questions and input from the students will be encouraged. Hand-Painted Western Ornaments & Magnets – $65 Kay Orton
Course Description: Students will learn everything from choosing a design & leather for leather ornaments to cutting them out and painting them. Each student will make two or more (time permitting) ornaments or magnets and can choose a design from Kay’s library of western ornament patterns or draw their own. Most ornaments are about 3 inches by 4 inches and are realistically painted on both sides. Some of the most popular western patterns are the cowboy Santa, cowboy & girl angels, hat, rope & gloves, cowboy snowman, holy cows and many other cow & horse ornaments.Materials to Bring: One square foot of tracing paper, a tracing tool, and an Ex-acto knife with a couple of extra blades. Course Description: Learn the fundamentals of professional holster design and construction. This workshop will focus on both modern and Western holsters with the student designing and making two holster styles of their choosing (to be discussed prior to your arrival in Sheridan). This class will cover the fitting of the holster (style) to the customer, types of holsters and their applications, as well as designing holsters from scratch. In construction, we will cover when to use and how to install a welt seam, a full liner, and wet molding. Course Description: Under Darin’s careful instruction students will practice methods of making the cinch with special focus on traditional cord stringing/warping considerations of the cinch body. Darin will demonstrate specific steps which ensure the highest level of quality, explaining how to recognize common difficulties and how to make improvements for the comfort and health of your equine. Each student will be provided with materials for two basic cinches and one ornate Vaquero (a $200.00 retail value) to assist in reinforcing memory of cord lay-up and tension. Completion of at least one usable cinch during class is anticipated. It is recommended that students first take “Cordage-Style Cinches: Pattern & Design” since this Vaquero workshop focuses heavily on the skills of body strand techniques. Course Description: Learn the fundamental principles and techniques on how to sharpen virtually all of your leather craft cutting tools. We will cover basic edge theory, and sharpening principles and techniques for the swivel knife, round knife, skiver, trim knife, utility knife, edgers, etc. Participants will have the opportunity to practice the techniques presented on various sharpening media. This workshop is designed for the leather crafter that uses and wants sharp cutting tools and will be catered to any skill level – novice to master. Darin Alexander – Master Cinch MakerDarin learned the cinch making trade in high school over 25 years ago and gained practical application as a hand on his great uncle’s ranch in Wyoming. It was no looking back from there. He has been teaching the art and trade of quality cinch design to the general public for 20 years. Customers have remarked time and again that the attention to detail put in every one of his cinches is excellent, with improved comfort seen in horses and mules being more relaxed.
Robert Beard – Master Leather ArtistBob owns Pro Series Tool Company in Farmington, New Mexico, where he specializes in designing and crafting custom leather tools. He is a world-renowned carver, instructor and tool maker and has been a leather artist for over forty years. He was awarded the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft in 1987.
Chris Andre – Professional Leather Artist & Holster MakerChris “Slickbald” Andre is a professional leather artist and maker in Frederick, Colorado. Chris works mostly in cowboy action and concealed carry gun leather while dabbling in saddles, cowboy trappings and motorcycle gear. Chris is also an active and competitive member of SASS and Cowboy Fast Draw, and is a lifetime competitive shooter. Chris authors a variety of instruction and pattern packs for gun leather and other items as well as offering workshops in holster making and carving.

Chan Geer – Master Leather ArtistChan began leather work as a young boy helping his dad repair saddles. He and his wife, Mary, live in Sheridan where he owns and operates Geer’s Custom Leather. Geer has written three books on Sheridan Style Carving, made and compiled pattern packs and is a contributing author in The Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal. Chan has produced a line of project-based, how-to DVDs which have been very successful. He was awarded the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft in 2005.
Al Gould – Master Saddle MakerAl Gould is a custom saddle maker and leather artist, having made saddles since 1960. Horses and cattle have been a large part of his life with experience in – and not limited to – high country packing mules and cow punching. Al is also a gold card member of Pro-Rodeo. Al has taught a variety of workshops at numerous past shows and enjoys sharing as much of his hard-earned knowledge as possible. He was awarded the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft in 2009.

Carl Chappell – Master Boot MakerCarl learned boot making from his father and began making boots in 1982. In 2001, his boot entry placed first in the World Leather Debut, and he repeated as winner of the Boots division in 2010. In 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009, he won the Masters Division at the Texas Boot & Saddle Roundup. Carl operates a boot making school, is a full-time boot maker and has published a book and video about making boots. His latest achievement is being the recipient of the AWA Will Rodgers Award for “Boot Maker of the Year 2011”.
kathy Flanagan – Leather ArtistKathy has been working with leather for four decades, beginning in 1970, in 4-H, learning from masters of the craft. In 2005, the International Federation of Leather Guilds awarded Kathy the “Best of Advanced” division and “People’s Choice” honors. Later, in 2009, the IFoLG awarded Kathy the “Pathway to Masters” award for her continuous efforts and willingness to teach in the field of leathercraft.
Pete Gorrell – Master Saddle MakerPete began working with leather in 1952 while working as a ranch hand in Colorado. He learned saddle making from Clarence Wilson, and afterwards studied human and horse anatomies to be able to build better saddles for both. He and his wife, Helen, reside in Gardner, CO, and Hawaii, where they diligently teach leathercraft and saddle making. Pete has also authored books on leathercraft and saddle making, and is a contributing author in The Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal. Pete received the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft in 2007.
Sheryl Katzke – Expert BraiderSheryl was first introduced to leathercraft while a Girl Scout and later began braiding leather, learning from masters of the craft in both kangaroo and rawhide, and becoming skilled in round braiding, inlay/overlay braids and fine edge braiding. Her work has won many blue ribbons and she enjoys making custom dog leads. She teaches leathercraft in her community and owns Katzke’s Custom Leather in Redmond, Oregon, with her husband, Tom.

Bob klenda – Master Saddle MakerBob has been carving leather since 1959 and making saddles since 1962. As past president of the Colorado Saddle Makers Association, he is accustomed to teaching saddle making and leather carv-ing at its seminars as well as for 4-H and in his own saddle shop. Bob is primarily self-taught and is eager to share his knowledge with others. Bob received the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft in 2010.
Tony Laier – Master Leather ArtistTony’s experience in the world of leather is extensive. For over 30 years, they have been immersed in the retail sales, research, design, marketing and instruction of leathercraft. Currently, Tony is Director of Research and Development for Tandy Leather Factory Company and works together on this with his wife Kay. He received the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft in 1999.
Jim Linnell – Master Leather ArtistAn active leather craftsman for over 35 years, Jim has conducted hundreds of workshops and dem-onstrations on various leather working techniques in the U.S. and Europe, including workshops for 4-H, Boy Scouts and other youth organizations. Jim received the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft in 2002.
Nick Carter – Expert BraiderAn accomplished braider currently residing in Casper, Wyoming, Nick is a working man’s braider who has been making and sometimes selling his braided goods for over 24 years. Always willing to share and learn techniques, Nick offers his services with great enthusiasm every chance he gets.
Bob Brenner – Accomplished Saddle MakerBesides being a full-time saddle maker, Bob was a branch bank manager that gives him good experi-ence in reading and analyzing profit and loss statements. He was also an account manager for a computer company that did all the data processing for area banks. Based on his wealth of knowledge gleaned from these experiences, he published a book on pricing saddles and other leather work. Bob owns Pike’s Peak Saddlery in Black Forest, CO.
Joe Boyles – BraiderJoe began braiding in Australia in 1988. Since then, he has been taught rawhide work by Mary Fields who is in the Bruce Grant books. He prefers kangaroo to braid with but uses rawhide as well as calf lace. He is also starting to braid bull ropes. Joe enjoys teaching and will keep you entertained while you learn.

Jesse Smith – Master Saddle MakerJesse began making leather craft items while in the Air Force. He made his first saddle for his dad. Eventually, he bought The Tack Shop in Spokane, WA, and has built saddles ever since. Jesse also taught saddlery at Spokane Falls Community College for 28 years. He now lives in Pritchett, CO, and operates his own saddle making school, and is an accomplished chap maker. Jesse received the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft in 2001.
Paul Zalesak – Founding President of Leather Wranglers, Leather Artist and Knife MakerPaul began tooling leather in 1974 under the tutelage of Jim Resley. In 2001 he started Leather Wranglers Inc., and developed the SK-3 Swivel Knife. A full-time faculty member at the local community college, Paul also loves to teach basic swivel knife use and sharpening techniques. Paul is the Vice President of the International Internet Leathercrafters’ Guild, and is a member of the New Mexico Roadrunner Lerath-er Artisans’ Guild, the Colorado Saddle Makers Association, and the Lone Star Leather Crafters Guild.

Lisa Sorrell – Master Boot MakerLisa Sorrell found boot making by answering an ad for someone to “stitch boot tops.” She’s been making boots for over 20 years and has owned her own boot making business since 1996. Her dedication to learning the craft and her flair for design have established Lisa as a master bootmaker, and her work has been featured in magazines, books, and the PBS program “Craft in America.” She remains committed to the tradition of fit and function while pursuing her passion for the designs and colors that characterize a cowboy boot.
Kay Orton – Master Leather ArtistKay learned leathercraft in 4-H and has been a leathercraft leader in western Colorado for the past 40 years, organizing youth leathercraft workshops and teaching classes each year. In 1981 Kay started Kay’s Creative Leathercrafts, where she has stayed busy making leather hand-painted orna-ments and leather items. In 2003, she started learning saddle making with Bob Klenda as her mentor and became involved with the Colorado Saddle Makers Association, Inc. where she is presently the business manager. She received the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft in 2012.
Bob Park – Professional Tooler & Leather ArtistBobby began tooling leather as a youngster in Arizona where he was greatly influenced by the cow-boy lifestyle. Specializing in western floral tooling, Bobby has developed a unique look in the tradition of the western style. His products sell throughout the U.S. and Europe and have won numerous awards at various shows and exhibitions. In 2011 he received the “Best of the Masters” award at the International Federation of Leather Guilds convention. Most recently, he received the “Bootstrap Award” at the 2012 Trappings of the American West exhibition for his contribution toward the ad-vancement of the art. Bobby recently wrote a book entitled “Creating Floral Designs”.
Olive Parker – Leather ArtistOlive has been creating with leather since 1977 and has received guidance from Alan Dewey, Paul Burnett, Bob Beard and others. Her contribution to functional leather art is a western woman’s per-spective in a traditionally masculine arena. She enjoys using shimmering acrylic colors, sterling silver and gold and takes her inspiration from her Montana landscape and natural surroundings.
