MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
Vance RoleyDean and First Hawaiian Bank Chair of Leadership and Management
Aloha,
I would like to welcome all of you to Business Night 2015, an evening of awards, mentorship, and networking.
Tonight’s theme, “Insuring Bright Futures,” is particularly appropriate for this year’s event. This past October, the Shidler College of Business received a commitment of $69 million from Jay H. Shidler (BBA ‘68) bringing his total donation to the college to $100 million.
This unprecedented gift is a long-term investment in the college’s future and insures the continued success of our students, programs and events such as Business Night.
For over 50 years, Business Night has been pairing students with business professionals to share ideas, exchange valuable information, and give students an opportunity to gain confidence as they enter the workplace.
With the support of Shidler alumni, industry organizations and the Hawai‘i business community, over $45,000 in awards will be presented tonight to our top undergraduate and graduate students.
The success of Business Night would not be possible without business leaders and corporate support. Therefore, I would like to thank keynote speaker Lance Mizumoto, title sponsor First Insurance Company of Hawaii, award sponsors, and the professionals here tonight for your continued support of our students and college.
Best wishes for a most enjoyable evening,
Vance Roley

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
I would like to begin by saying thank you to the professionals, Shidler faculty and staff, and students for taking the time to attend the 54th annual Business Night. Business Night provides students with an invaluable opportunity to develop their professional network and gain insight into Hawai‘i’s diverse business community. This event would not be possible without all of you.
I attended my first Business Night three years ago, as a sophomore. Through this experience, I established my first connections with the business community. My participation on last year’s Business Night student committee gave me a better understanding of the effort and dedication that goes into organizing a successful event. As the Executive Director of Business Night 2015, I am truly honored to have the opportunity to apply my past experiences to help plan this year’s event and to have worked with such an enthusiastic and hardworking committee.
This year’s Business Night theme—“Insuring Bright Futures”—represents everyone’s unique path to success. Tonight’s keynote speaker, Lance Mizumoto, has led an exemplary career and truly exemplifies our theme.
I would like to thank First Insurance Company of Hawaii for their generous contributions to Business Night for the past 10 years. With their support, students are able to attend Business Night at a subsidized and affordable price. Our useful and thematic favors are also provided by First Insurance, and I sincerely appreciate their cooperation throughout the whole planning process.
Once again, thank you all for attending this year’s event.
Sincerely,
Karen Zheng

BUSINESS NIGHT COMMITTEE
shidler.hawaii.edu/visionary#ShidlerVision
In 1961, the downtown Honolulu business community was developing at a rapid rate, yet no formal event existed that brought together business students and faculty with the business community. With the help of the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce, the Dean’s Office and a few business students, “Business Week” was established to fill that void.
The weeklong series of events included “Organization Day” where student received information on business clubs, professionnal seminars, tours of the college and a coffee hour with professionals. The week culminated with “Business Night,” a special evening of public awards, dancing, and networking.
By 1969, all daytime activities of Business Week were eliminated except for the popular Business Night. It was also the first year that students and professionals were matched one-to-one according to their fields of interest.
With the changes to Business Night, the event drew hundreds of students and professionals each year.
In 2006, Business Night shortened its program by separating from the Hall of Honor Awards, and returned to its original format of focusing on mentorship and student awards. It was a strategic move to create two separate events—one to recognize students and the other to honor alumni achievements.
Today’s Business Night has become the premier student event at the college. It is the one night that students can build on their career connections by meeting professionals from Hawai‘i’s business community.
Business Night Celebrating Over 50 Years of Mentorship and Conversation
