Even as a child, I knew that I could go visit Santa (or one of his helpers) in the department store, but I never confused that with the arrival of Jesus. Jesus was always someone different, and yet someone who was my friend. Jesus and Santa coexisted just fine for me. This is the time of year to let the essential come to the surface. True peace can only be found when we allow ourselves to accept the incredible gift of God’s unconditional love for us. Let the children’s joy in Santa Claus touch you. Let their acceptance of the miracle of Jesus Christ teach you how simple it all really is. It’s not about fancy gifts or fancy dinners. It’s not about getting everything just right, flawlessly replicating years past. It’s about joy. It’s about allowing ourselves to rediscover the simple yet extraordinary joys of birth and salvation and love. Amen. Mother Susan+

The Shepherd’s Crook The Church of the Good Shepherd

Pitman, NJ The Rev. Susan E. Osborne-Mott, Rector December 2017

“We Love Our Church”

Here’s what I’m wishing for: I want just a little sprinkle, a little touch of snow. WHAT? Mother Susan, how can you

say that? But I am looking forward to a thin carpet of snow upon the ground – just enough to remind me that it’s

winter. Remember, I’m from Minnesota. It’s not that Minnesotans like snow. We accept it. Snow is like taxes –

inevitable. You shovel it. You get over it. Done. And besides, it’s a lot prettier than taxes.

Snow is a sign. I look around me here at COGS and I realize that holiday signs are emergimg. The choir is

practicing Advent and Christmas music, the children are practicing for the pageant, the Brotherhood of St. Andrew

gave a us a wonderful Sunday brunch to raise money for Camden Christmas, the bustle of Holly Fair is upon us,

and our children are just daily increasing in excitement in general. Yikes! We all look for the signs of Advent. Gift

catalogues arrive, are rifled through and dog-eared, town decorations go up, the weather gets brisker, the wind has

a bite to it, the liturgical colors change (blue for us!), Christmas tree lots pop up.

Memories start to surface. I remember working at the Y’s Men’s (YMCA) Christmas Tree Lot with my Dad,

selling Christmas trees. It was freezing and there was one little gas stove in a shed, but we had fun. I just ran

around pretending I was in a winter forest. I don’t think I actually sold anything. To this day, the smell of pine is

my favorite smell. I remember my grandma baking delicious cardamom coffee bread. I remember going to Salem

Lutheran Church’s Smorgasbord with real Swedish meatballs and real Swedish potato sausage. I look up recipes in

my grandma’s old Elim Baptist Church cookbook to cook for Christmas if I have time. (But watch out for Mrs.

J.G. Johnson’s recipes! She always left something out – on purpose!) I remember sledding down Columbia Hill. It

was a huge hill and we sat down on cardboard and away we went!

My dad belonged to everything – YMCA, Kiwanis, Oddfellows, American Legion, whathaveyou. They always ask

the local mortician to join, so he did. He delivered food baskets for Kiwanis and he took us with him. He wanted us

to see that there were people who had a lot less than we did. My brother and I still talk about the people we met.

The woman who was cooking a small bird of undetermined origin, maybe a robin? The homes where part of the

house was blocked off and unused all winter to conserve heat. A house where I saw one of my Sunday School

classmates hiding behind a door because she was embarrassed that her family was receiving a food basket.

There seemed to be more snow then. Maybe I remember it that way because I was small. Everything was covered

in white and very still.

Most of all, I remember that as Christmas approached, most of our Sunday School lessons were about preparing for

the birth of Jesus and that meant Christmas was coming! Somehow, I never got Jesus being born and Santa Claus

coming mixed up. Even as a child, I knew that I could go visit Santa (or one of his helpers) in the department store,

but I never confused that with the arrival of Jesus. Jesus was always someone different, and yet someone who was

my friend. Jesus and Santa coexisted just fine for me.

This is the time of year to let the essential come to the surface. True peace can only be found when we allow

ourselves to accept the incredible gift of God’s unconditional love for us. Let the children’s joy in Santa Claus

touch you. Let their acceptance of the miracle of Jesus Christ teach you how simple it all really is. It’s not about

fancy gifts or fancy dinners. It’s not about getting everything just right, flawlessly replicating years past. It’s about

joy. It’s about allowing ourselves to rediscover the simple yet extraordinary joys of birth and salvation and love.

Amen.

Camden Christmas

Camden Christmas held its first Halloween Party at St Paul’s on October 28 and had over 66 children involved. We had tremendous help from 10 volunteers from Rowan University (who brought games and activities and 3 wonderful piñatas!), our teens from the Confirmation class at Good Shepherd and the Camden Christmas committee. Everyone had a wonderful time and the Camden Christmas volunteers were able to add a number of names to our list of kids who will be invited to attend the event on St Nicholas Sunday!

St Paul’s on Market Street in Camden is a new location for us this year. We want to thank you ahead of time for all your prayers and financial help to make this event possible. We will be shopping on December 26 and wrapping the following week! Please see Deacon Carl to find out just how you can help!

You can help by joining us at the Brotherhood of St Andrew Luncheon and consider doing what you can to bring a memorable Christmas to so many kids in Camden!

Thank you again and thank you for being part of Camden Christmas!

Thank You God for Catalogs BY ALICE AULTMAN

To me the gift of the season is love. Special family members live miles away and the big thrill is to see them, how much their children have grown and just SEE these people and to collect hugs. I’d just as soon admire the lights of Christmas, the decorations thoughtfully arranged in colorful arrays, go home, count my blessings and thank God.

However gifts play into the picture. We don’t give huge gifts…just thoughtful items BUT one has to collect items that would fill the bill. Here is where as the catalogs come into play. I know all about the high cost of postage but I would rather pay the postage, not be involved with shopping masses, hope for a parking space and use the gas to get to the destination hoping to find a unique item to show I care. A catalog presents a photo and a chance to think about the choice in the comfort of my home.

There are many pluses to this. When the package arrives it is always great to see what the gift actually looks like. Yes, there have been some surprises but most generally positive. The downside of this whole procedure is my mailbox gets loaded with catalogs that I would never order from, evidently the result of my name being sold to related places. Yes, call this “junk mail” if you will, but there is a certain enjoyment in seeing what is out there.

So, enjoy the season in your own way and Thank God for that special child that you sent to us. Yes, we will remember the reason for the season. Merry CHRISTmas, one and all.

OUTREACH

Thank you so very much for your generous donations of clothing and shoes for the people of Camden! We have rec’d 65+ bags this month!!!! I believe that is a new record! Now that it is growing colder, shoes, warm coats, hats, gloves, etc., are needed more than ever! If you have these items, please leave them in manageable size bags on our front porch. We will be happy to deliver them to the people of Camden who need them most! We are located at 223 Highland Terrace, Pitman.

Thanks so much! Deacon Carl and Ellie Dunn

CHURCH HISTORY DISPLAY

I hope that you have had a chance to look at the rotating church history exhibit that is in the glass case in the parish hall. Please make sure that you take the time to look at it. This exhibit rotates every 3 months or so, it will feature historical items from our church family and the town of Pitman sometimes too! If you have anything that you would like to share with your Good Shepherd church family, please let me know! Your items will be taken care of and after the exhibit ends, they will be given back to you.

Thanks so much! Ellie Dunn

Prayer Shawl/Caring Hands Ministry

Every so often we get a request for a Prayer Shawl to be given to someone in need. Sometimes it is during an illness, sometimes during grieving periods after the loss of a loved one. The Shawls are crocheted or knitted by the women in this ministry. Every other Tuesday morning you will find our Caring Hands Group knitting/crocheting the shawls in our Conference room. They are made with prayer for those who will receive them. I can’t begin to tell you of the peace and comfort these shawls have brought to so many people. They need not be members of our parish. Need is spread everywhere. If you know of a need, just ask Pat Braidwood

Treasurer's Blog - December 2017 Results through October 2017

Total Income: Here is a breakdown of our total income for ten months of 2017:

Budget Actual

Loose Plate 1,900 1,839

Envelopes 173,300 189,607

Special 4,450 4,389

Other 300 45

Income 179,950 195,880

Our envelope income for ten months has exceeded our estimate. It appears that while we didn’t receive as many pledges for 2017 as we had hoped, the offerings reflect that our unpledged income is strong. The financial team is appreciative of your support.

Total expenses: Here is a recap of our total expenses for ten months of 2017.

Budget Actual

Expenses 183,592 182,049

Our expenses are in line with our estimates so far this year.

A question has been raised regarding our Dec. 24th services. Since there will be a 10AM service that Sunday morning and there will be two Christmas Eve services (7PM and 10PM) that same day, do we use our regular offering envelopes and our special Christmas on the same day. The answer is yes. Bring your regular Dec. 24th envelopes in the morning and your Christmas envelopes in the evening. We are able to post both to our computer system.

A fund named the Squirrel’s Nest has now been formed for financing the replacement of these items rather than having to handle them in an emergency situation. So far, we have collected over $1,252.

Thank you for your donations to the Camden Christmas project which provides gifts for children that otherwise would have no Christmas. Good Shepherd donations have totaled $3,683 to date.

Friendly’s Fundraiser The Church of the Good Shepherd raised $218.59 from the Friendly’s Fundraiser. The Vestry decided to contribute these funds to the décor of our Sunday School. Thanks to all who came out to support this event.

Page Turners’ Book Group

NO DECEMBER MEETING January 21 – AFTER THE RAIN by Karen White February 18 - BENEATH A SCARLET SKY by Mark Sullivan The Page Turners meet once a month, immediately following the 10am Holy Eucharist, in the Conference Room.

Adult Forum

December's Adult Forum will be held on Sunday, December 3 following the 10 a.m. service in the Conference Room. All adults are invited to join us! We will continue with our new series on the Apostle Paul called "Eclipsing Empire". Biblical scholars, Marcus Borg and Dominic Crossan guide us through Turkey into the places where Paul walked and preached. They show us the marvels of the architecture and religious sites where Paul grew the church and rallied against the empirical culture of the Romans with the message Jesus preached: Peace through love, not peace through victory.

BIBLE STUDY

THURSDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY will begin a new study on January 11. We will be using Rev. Ellen Davis' book Getting Involved With God: Rediscovering the Old Testament. Rev. Davis has a unique way of interpreting the Old Testament that is engaging and helpful in our ability to understand them. This book is divided into five parts: 1)Pain & Praise (based on the Psalms) 2)The Cost of Love (Burning Bush, Binding of Isaac and the Song of Songs) 3)The Art of Living Well (Proverbs, Ecclesastes and Job, 4) Habits of the Heart: Proverbs 8, Psalms 102 and 51, Isaiah 49, (and 5)Torah of the Earth: (Learning ecology from the Bible and Numbers 11). Order your copy now via Amazon or other book source and be prepared to join us in the Conference Room on January 11 by reading the first chapter. We meet at 9:30-10:30 a.m. For more info call Mel at 478-234-3698.

Nominations for the Annual Meeting Elections

According to the By-Laws of the Parish of the Good Shepherd, the Nominating Committee is to be made up of the out-going members of the Vestry. After deliberation and the contacting of possible candidates, the Committee will draw up an initial list of persons in the parish who are willing and qualified to serve; and to have their names put forth to be elected as members of Good Shepherd’s Vestry. The Canon Law of the Episcopal Church requires that the election be open to all who are qualified. Qualifications are as follows:

1) They must be a Communicant of the Church of the Good Shepherd in good standing.

2) They must attend Church Worship regularly and

faithfully.

3) They must regularly give to the financial support of the Church.

4) They must be committed to the Doctrine, Discipline and Worship of the Episcopal Church.

It is also expected that any candidate will have the ability and intention to attend all of the regularly scheduled monthly Vestry meetings and also participate in Parish functions and events. All nominations should be addressed to any member of the Nominating Committee. December 20, 2017 is the deadline. If no additional names for candidates are received by that date, the initial slate of the Nominating Committee will be presented to the Annual Meeting, uncontested.

If you have any questions, please speak to any member of the Committee. The Committee members are: Wayne Szalma, Chelsea Richmond, Connie Parent.

Christmas Poinsettias & Greens

The beauty of the Church of the Good

Shepherd at Christmas is made possible

through the participation of many parishioners.

While no specific amount is required for a

memorial or thank offering, generous gifts will

permit us to put flowers on the altar on

Sundays during the year when there are no

memorials. Please use this form to indicate your

wishes as to how your memorial/thank

offering is to be listed and return it to the

parish office or put it in the offering plate as

soon as possible. We would like to be able to

prepare the insert in advance. The absolute

deadline for inclusion of the names in the

Christmas bulletin is Monday, December 18th.
