Monitoring data taken of clinical visitors to hospitals in the past two weeks showed five of every 100 patients were suffering from the flu. A flu infection could worsen the health condi- tion of patients with chronic diseases, such as asthma and heart disease, and put patients with severe diseases at a risk of complications. Doctors warned that toddlers under 2, elderly people and those groups with low immunity and serious diseases to take extra precautions against the flu. In addition, pregnant women are at a high risk of suffering from complications caused by the flu. Women who plan to have a baby are advised to receive inocula- tions three months before pregnancy. Ex-official jailed WANG JUEMING, a former office director with Qianhai Infrastructure Construction Commanding Headquarters, was sentenced to 11 years in jail for abusing his power and taking 23 million yuan (US$3.4 million) in bribes to help others acquire urban contracts. Wang also received three cars worth a total of 1.23 mil- lion yuan, 500,000 yuan to decorate his home and fuel cards and shopping cards totaling 150,000 yuan, the court verdict said. Wang was probed in May last year by the Shenzhen Municipal Disciplinary Inspec- tion Commission of the CPC. Road restoration THE section of Enshang Road in Yantian District that collapsed due to the heavy rain July 15 will be restored in two weeks, according to the city’s transport commis- sion. Vehicles taking that road to Yantian are advised to choose other exits for the Shenzhen-Yantian No. 2 Pas- sage or to use Luosha Road to Shenyan Road via the Wutong Mt. Tunnel. Fugitive caught A MAN who was on the run and wanted by police has been caught by traffic police in Yan- tian for illegally parking. An officer with the Meisha Unit of the Yantian Police Brigade found a car illegally parked in a motorist lane July 15. (Han Ximin) A 196-KILOGRAM Hong Kong man underwent a gastrectomy at Shenzhen People’s Hospital as his obesity had endangered his health, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported Thursday. The 36-year-old patient, sur- named Xu, gained 50 kilograms over the past two years. Accord- ing to him, his heavy breathing always makes his social life awk- ward and he sometimes suffers from sleep apnea. Xu was diagnosed with severe obesity, respiratory problem, fatty liver and abnormal blood glucose, meaning that his life is in serious danger if he doesn’t lose weight. Following his friends’ advice, Xu decided to undergo a gastrectomy to remove part of his stomach. Xu is the heaviest surgical patient that Shenzhen People’s Hospital has ever received, and his weight and size created new challenges for the medical staff. Doctors from several depart- ments worked closely together to ensure the operation went smoothly, while the hospital also customized an operating table and equipment for Xu. The operation was performed successfully and Xu’s stomach was reduced to one-third of its originally size. The doctors sug- gested that he eat soft food for the first three months to allow his stomach to recover. After three months, a proper plan of eating less food and doing more A TRAVELER was detained by Huanggang Customs officers at Futian Checkpoint after he was caught carrying more than 9.1 kilograms of ivory and ivory products to cross the border from Hong Kong to Shenzhen on Tuesday, according to sznews.com. The traveler, who hasn’t been identified, caught the attention of the customs officers as he was carrying a large backpack. When the customs officers checked his backpack, over 9.1 kilograms of ivory products covered in black tape were found. The seized ivory products included four ivory balls as big as an adult’s fist and seven ivory segments. One of the ivory segments was nicely engraved, while the other segments could be spliced into two 1-meter-long pieces, according to the Daily report. According to the traveler, he was told by some strangers that he could get 300 yuan (US$44.12) as a reward if he took the back- pack across the border. He said he had no idea what was in the bag and he never thought that he was doing something illegal. The investigation of the case continues. The spokesperson of Huang- gang Customs said that the number of passengers illegally bringing ivory across the border has been reduced by 70 to 80 percent over the past year, as most passengers are well aware of the relevant regulations. Passengers who are used by others to illegally carry endan- gered species and related prod- ucts across the border will also be held legally responsible, accord- ing to the spokesperson.
