A MESSAGE FROM OUR SPARKLE PARTY COMMITTEE CHAIR
to the second annual Sparkle Party in support of Sheena’s Place at the beautiful Aga Khan Museum.
Sheena’s Place offers hope and support to individuals, families and friends affected by eating disorders by offering a wide variety of professionally facilitated support groups and services. Your funds provide programs ranging from support groups to art therapy classes to one-off workshops, helping meet the needs of groups as diverse as adolescents in transition to adulthood, new mothers and individuals in middle age – just to name a few! We are committed to inspiring hope, reducing stigma, raising awareness and offering meaningful help and information at all stages of recovery from the mental health challenge posed by eating disorders.
This year’s Sparkle Party is going to be an amazing event hosted by the iconic Jeanne Beker. The Aga Khan Museum is an architectural marvel and its exhibits are truly breathtaking. Thank you to Wendy Gamble and her team for the support and recommendations that you have given us throughout the process. In this beautiful venue, we look forward to being entertained by the amazing Tomi Swick and the interactive displays and creative activations provided by our amazing sponsors. We also look forward to enjoying the delectable food and drink provided by Daniel et Daniel, Thobors Boulangerie et Patisserie Café, Eurovintage Wine and Spirits, and Steam Whistle Brewery.
We are so grateful for the dedication of the team that made this evening’s event possible. Thank you to each of our Sparkle Party Committee members, Amy Davies, Asha Daniere, Marisa Fabiano, Steven Goldsmith, Phil Frappier, Nikki Hawke, James Jewett, Sarah Johnson, David Kines, Mo-D, David Purdy, Gavin Swartzman and Mary Ann Turcke. Of course, thank you to Debbie and Christine and the rest of the team at Sheena’s Place. Your tireless energy, creativity and enthusiasm in planning this event has been truly inspiring.
The generosity of all of you who attend and support this evening’s gala allows us to assist the many individuals who suffer from this devastating illness, and to continue to offer essential programming, community outreach and access to information and resources.
Thank you and I hope you have a “Sparkling” evening.
Welcome

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, SHEENA’S PLACE
A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
for joining us at the Sparkle Party to raise funds for Sheena’s Place. As our largest fund raising initiative of the year, we are so grateful for your participation and support
tonight at the incredible Aga Khan Museum. We hope you will have a great time!I’m keen to have a chance to tell you about all the exciting events and initiatives
happening at Sheena’s Place and beyond her walls. The house is bustling this spring session with more than 25 different groups and workshops that address a broad spectrum of needs for our clients. In addition to our extensive program offerings, we are busy working on both our physical premises and our collaborations with the community.
Old and new friends and donors have reached out to us. In early March, we had $35,000 worth of new windows installed throughout the entire house thanks to the generosity of our friends and donors, especially Bill Bratt and Mike Power from the Toronto Sun and Mike Nolet from Brock Doors & Windows Inc. These beautiful new windows have literally given us a whole new outlook on the world!
We are so delighted to report to you that because of your contributions our community outreach and collaboration program continues to grow. Outreach education with a view to prevention or early identification is one of our most important initiatives. Since January, we have spoken to close to 600 high school students about taking care of themselves and their mental health during their transition into young adulthood; we have attended seven post-secondary student fairs; and we have hosted two webinars discussing the support services offered at Sheena’s Place, and how to best support students experiencing challenges with disordered eating, exercise and their body image.
We have initiated meetings with Jack.org, Shea Emry and the Wellmen Project, Homewood Health Centre and other mental health services and agencies to discuss collaborating in our shared goals, such as effecting change in the way youth deal with transitional stress. We are also in the process of establishing innovative new partnerships to address the myriad of pressures that new mothers face, and we want to expand our services to address and support their care. To this end, we will be collaborating with Women’s College Hospital through its Maternal Health Program, Mother Matters, and with Dr. Simone Vigod, the Shirley Brown Chair in Mental Health Research. We are also excited to join forces with Mount Sinai Hospital’s Reproductive Health Program, and Dr. Ariel Dalfen, Head of Mount Sinai’s Perinatal Mental Health Program.
None of these programs and new initiatives can happen without you. Every dollar you donate is significant, safeguarded, and put toward our goal of providing hope and support for individuals struggling with eating disorders. Your support gives us the resources we need to bring programs and initiatives to confront this mental health issue. Your compassion transforms lives and your presence here tonight fights the stigma. Thank you from all of us at Sheena’s Place.
Thank you

SHEENA’S PLACE TO GET A ‘WARM-UP’ FROM COLIN & JUSTINInviting historic mansion welcomes those affected by eating disorders
When people find their way to Sheena’s Place in downtown Toronto, the first thing they discover is a warm, inviting atmosphere befitting of an historic mansion in the Annex. Once inside, the hope is they’ll pull up a chair and stay for a while.
And now that Colin & Justin – the fun-loving interior design duo from Scotland – are pitching in to help refurbish the one-of-a-kind support centre, the chances of that happening are even better, says executive director Debbie Berlin-Romalis, who recently gave the pair a full tour of the aging home at 87 Spadina Ave.
“We sat down and talked about why Sheena’s Place is such an integral service and why it needs some love,” says Berlin-Romalis, “It needs paint, new carpeting, new furniture – it needs a whole bright look,” she says.
Founded in 1996 by a group that includes three former Toronto Sun employees, Sheena’s Place provides a safe, non-threatening environment to those affected by eating disorders. It relies solely on the generosity and financial support of individuals, foundations and corporations to maintain operations, offering a wide range of professionally PH

facilitated groups and outpatient services at no cost. But after helping more than 1,000 people each
year for nearly two decades, the original interior renovations to the home are now showing signs of wear and tear.
“One of the challenges is that if the place feels old and worn, and energy isn’t being invested into making it look better, people won’t seek out service,” says Berlin-Romalis, who has led support groups at the centre for 17 years. “I remember what the house used to look like when it first opened. We really need to bring it up to a different level now.”
Part of the refurbishing includes all new windows, courtesy of Sun Media Corp. which is partnering with Brock Doors & Windows to do the installation. The other part will be more like an unveiling, once Colin & Justin suggest paint colours and accessories, and figure out if any of the flooring beneath the carpet can be salvaged.
“Everything here is quite old and beautiful. We really just want to keep it alive and well,” says Berlin-
Romalis. “Now with the help of the Toronto Sun and Colin & Justin, it will be fresh.”
The primary focus will be the main floor, which includes the entrance and reception area, along with a large living room, kitchen and dining area. The second floor houses administrative offices and a library, and the third floor is home to an arts room where outpatients discover their ‘voice’ through art mediums such as painting/drawing, writing and music.
“Once upon a time everyone knew someone who was affected or touched by cancer and we’re finding the same with mental health and eating disorders as well,” says Berlin-Romalis. “It’s not just people who’ve been involved with Sheena’s Place who give to us. It’s the people who understand the overwhelming intensity of eating disorders.”
Sheena’s Place is committed to inspiring hope, reducing stigma, raising awareness and offering meaningful help at all stages of recovery. To learn more about its programs and services, call 416-927-8900 or email [email protected].

5 simple ways to end the stigma around mental illness. It’s not always easy to know how to break the stigma associated with mental illness. Experts suggest 5 ways to help.
Choose the right words. People with a mental illness are just that: People with a mental illness. Not “crazy,” “bipolar” or “schizophrenic.” Too many people still dismiss or joke about mental illness. Would they be as comfortable doing so if they were talking about cancer?
Small acts of kindness, such as a get-well card or an invitation to coffee, can mean a lot to someone who is struggling with a mental illness. Ask yourself how you would want to be treated if you had a serious illness and use that as your guide.
Be wary of giving advice. People with a mental illness don’t want to hear that they’re “just going through a bad patch” or that they should remember they have a lot to be happy about. It’s like telling someone with heart disease they need to snap out of it. Ask and listen to what they have to say about their illness.
Finally, and most importantly, start a conversation about mental health with everyone close to you. Because everyone has someone in their life that has been impacted by mental illness. Talk about it, and you’ll be taking a big step in helping to create a stigma-free world where those who need help don’t fear asking for it.
Learn more about mental illnesses and the stigma that surrounds them. Educating yourself about mental illness and how it actually affects those who suffer will help reduce misperceptions and stereotypes. The more you know, the more you can talk about it in a constructive way.

ffering a warm and comfortable environment is fundamental to the services Sheena’s Place
provides, and after close to twenty active years in our large century home, we find our well-loved space due for a décor makeover and in need of some renewal.
Enter Mike Nolet and his team from Brock Doors & Windows, sponsored by our generous friends Bill Bratt and Mike Power from the Toronto Sun, to replace all of the windows – most of which were original to the 100-year-old house.
“The windows are in,” said Bill Bratt. “And the old home feels like it’s received a nice, warm hug.” The new windows, installed in March, are providing a clean, simple look, brighter light and fresh air in the house and will no doubt eliminate drafts and reduce our heating and cooling costs.
And as spring arrives to the city and our Tranquility Garden blooms, we are so excited to continue our collaboration with design duo Colin and Justin, who are designing a whole new look to our largest main floor space, the living room. Colin and Justin have invited others to join them in the renewal of our space.
“We’re proud to support Sheena’s Place in Toronto and look forward to improving it in any way we can,” said Colin and Justin. “The comfort, wellness and safety of those who attend are paramount and we hope to enhance the experience. If you are a supplier/manufacturer or maker of anything home related, we appeal for help in whichever way you can give it.”
Sheena’s Place is so grateful for the improvements to the house brought to us by Brock Windows & Doors, the Toronto Sun and Colin & Justin.

The Expressive Arts Groups at Sheena’s Place give people with eating disorders a safe place and a safe way to express themselves and their emotions. Through art, the participants seek to reduce self-harming behaviour, to develop their self-esteem, to recover and grow. In 2014, roughly 500 people participated in the program, with demand exceeding spaces.
The live auction of artwork by Charles Pachter and Ian Alter on opening night of the 17th Annual Expressive Arts Show, in Honour of Jennifer Haberman, marks the transformation of the Art Show into a fundraiser as well as a celebration of expression. The program has received and continues to receive generous support from the Haberman Family, in memory of Jennifer Haberman / Sjenta Dancer, who directed art therapy groups at Sheena’s Place.
In 2010, the Haberman Family, Loretta Rogers, Nancy McFadyen, and Patti Pilon created the Expressive Arts Campaign, raising over $300,000 for two consecutive years to help fund the Expressive Arts Groups. This year, Sheena’s Place invites friends and donors to join in supporting the Expressive Arts Groups and the good they do.
