The proposed study will provide crucial pilot data for a future R01 randomized lifestyle intervention with this at-risk, marginalized subpopulation. Role: Primary Investigator Office of the Provost, Year of Healthy U grant 9/30/19 – 9/30/20 University of Pittsburgh ($5,000) “Disrespecting the Border: A Latinx Community-Based Mural in Pittsburgh” Amidst the growing global anti-immigrant climate that has permeated daily life in the U.S., Disrespecting the Border emerges as an interdisciplinary alliance to create a community-based mural with Latinx youth in Pittsburgh, a city that is attracting a growing Latinx population. The purpose of this study is to test the effects of a promotora-led, home-based obesity prevention intervention on physical activity and diet in Latino preschool children of immigrants, compared with a wait-list control group, after 6-months. The study builds upon findings from an NHLBI funded R21 pilot study that examined the feasibility and acceptability of a 10-week, promotora-led, home-based child obesity prevention intervention in Latino preschool children of immigrants in an emerging Latino community. Role: Primary Investigator NIH/NIOSH 9/2020 – 8/2024 “ A Multicomponent Sedentary Behavior Intervention in Desk Workers with Chronic Low Back Pain” ($2,451,000) Though prolonged sitting during the workday exacerbates chronic low back pain with related detriments to employee health and work outcomes, no workplace sitting reduction interventions or Guidelines to address this burden are available. In response, we propose a clinical trial to test the effect of our low-touch, biopsychosocial Stand Back intervention - which targets reduced sitting and pain self-management – on low back pain disability, productivity, well-being, and healthcare utilization in desk workers with chronic low back pain. We will also collect stakeholder feedback on factors influencing intervention success, barriers, facilitators, and real-world scalability of the Stand Back intervention to help us disseminate the Stand Back intervention to desk workers across sectors and lessen the significant burden of chronic low back pain. Role: Co-Investigator Not Funded Office of the Provost’s Pitt Momentum Funds 2019 1/01/2020 – 1/01/22 University of Pittsburgh ($352,506) “Recipe For Success: Improving Education and Health In Latinx Preschoolers Through Family Food Routines” The project aims to: a) evaluate the feasibility of an innovative, theory-based and culturally appropriate intervention designed to improve Latinx children’s education outcomes, health behaviors and home environment; and b) generate the evidence for a multi-site randomized controlled trial. Role: Co-Investigator Center for Race and Social Problems 9/1/19 – 8/31/20 University of Pittsburgh ($10,000) “Exploring the health and experience of Latino youth in Allegheny County through PhotoVoice” The purpose of this study is to explore the perceptions of Latino youth living in an emerging Latino community (Allegheny County) regarding their health experience. Youth will share their experience and perceptions through PhotoVoice, a community-engaged methodology where they will take pictures to share their stories. Specific attention will be given to the impact of the immigrant experience, stress, and discrimination/racism on health behaviors and health barriers and facilitators. Youth will be recruited through an after-school program at a Latino-serving community organization. The project will result in a photography exhibit that will be displayed in both community and academic settings. Role: Co-Principal Investigator

Engaging local Latin@s in Pitt’s research initiatives” This project seeks to use participatory methods to engage the Latino community and students with the ultimate goals of: 1) performing research that aligns with the priorities of the community, and 2) establish practical experiences for undergraduate and graduate students. Role: Co-Investigator Robert Wood Johnson Foundation 8/1/17 – 5/1/18 ($60,000) “Raising Places: Building Child-Centered Communities” This study catalyzes local momentum for cross-sector collaboration, engaging diverse partners to build healthier communities where all children and their families can thrive. Role: Design Team Member Transdisciplinary Collaborative Centers for Health Disparities Research on Chronic Disease Prevention (U54) NIH/NIMHD ($11,006,767) “Reducing Disparities in Chronic Disease: PA-OH Chronic Disease Prevention Consortium” In this U54 effort, we will focus on decreasing risk factors for two highly prevalent chronic conditions, type 2 diabetes/heart disease and mood disorders, which often co-occur. A major focus of the TCC is to test alternative delivery models for the interventions in a cluster randomized design, adapting them to settings that primarily serve disparity populations, and to use insights from these trials to bring them to scale for larger dissemination in the region and beyond. Role: Co-Investigator Center for Latin American Studies Faculty Research Grant 5/1/16-8/13/16 University of Pittsburgh ($4,000) “A Promotora-mediated, Family-based Intervention to Prevent Obesity in Latino Preschool Children” The purpose of this award is to cover partial summer salary for Dr. Ross in order to have paid, protected time to complete data analysis, manuscript preparation, and subsequent

Partnering with a federally-qualified health center and a social service organization, we propose to employ a quasi-experimental design to assess the effect of a promotores network on outcomes measured at 6 months after enrollment, compared with a wait-list control. Role: Primary Investigator Central Research Development Fund, Small Grants Program 7/31/16-6/30/19 University of Pittsburgh ($16,000) “Development and Maintenance of Healthy Physical Activity Habits in Latino Children Following Immigration to the U.S.” This study will examine the process by which Latino children develop and maintain healthy physical activity behaviors during such time of major family transition (i.e., immigration) and the role of immigrant parents in developing healthy physical activity habits in their children using qualitative methods (focus groups, PhotoVoice). ($2,605) “Addressing Health Disparities in U.S. Latinos: Learning from an existing promotores network” This project provides funding for travel to University of South Carolina to interact and learn from: (1) faculty and staff at the Consortium for Latino Immigration Studies in the Arnold School of Public Health; and (2) staff from the PASOs program, an established promotores network that has expanded programming across South Carolina. This funding will inform current and future projects as well as build relationships with the University of South Carolina for future research collaborations. Further, this project is significant because information gained will inform the design of a new course on Community Health Workers that will focus a significant percentage of its content on Latino studies. Role: Primary Investigator Office of the Provost, Year of Healthy U grant 1/2018 – 1/2019 University of Pittsburgh ($3,885) “Pitt Moves!” The Center for Health Equity (CHE) at the Graduate School of Public Health proposes a student-directed and student-centered physical activity break project, “Pitt Moves” with the main purpose of creating a culture of non-sedentarism at Pitt Public Health. The team includes students and faculty from two departments: Behavioral and Community Health Sciences and Health and Physical Activity or HPA. This project emerged from the interest of an entire class, BCHS 2525, where we piloted the break during Fall 2017. We plan to enroll at least ten courses to participate for Spring 2018 semester. The student trainer will train other students in leading the physical activity break. The project will build on experiences from the pilot in BCHS 2525 and the exercises will be inspired by Instant Recess (by T. Yancey).
