At this moment in history, the availability of water forlife is threatened, even thoughour Creator God has providedenough for all if we knew howto share it well. Affi rming ourchoices, in solidarity with thoseof many others, will determine

the outcome of this moment,we resolve to adopt a corporatestance on the issue of water.

We, Sisters of Charity, resolveto pray, study and act to assurethe just sharing of water for life

    on earth.

    Dear Friends,

As we go about our daily lives, most of us turn on the tap withoutthinking, to wash our hands, rinse our food or water our gardens. But what if you knew you had to make your water last 30 days, untilthe next water delivery? Or that you had two jugs of water to last theday, until you walk 3 hours to refill them the next morning?

2013 has been named the International Year of Water Co-operation.In doing so, the United Nations General Assembly said co-operation is essential to strike a balance between the different needs

and priorities and share this precious resource equitably, using wateras an instrument of peace. We couldnt agree more.

Partnering with communities in need, local organizations and you,our donors, our support of water projects has exceeded $600,000since 2005. But though much has been done, much is still left to do.

Please take a moment to read this update on some projects we havesuccessfully funded, and learn about one of the water projects wehave on the horizon. With an issue this big, it is truly only throughco-operation that we can change lives.

    Blessings,

Nuevo Reque is a community of approximately 500families, most of whom barely make a living throughrecycling work. It is an area known for extreme poverty, lacking in basic services.

Tanks to your donations, our Congregation was able tofinancially support the installation of a water storage tank,

a well, and in the final phase of the project, residentialwater connections. Were pleased to report that 326families now have running water in their homes.

    Te United Nations reports

    that 783-million people do not

have access to clean water and

    almost 2.5-billion do not have

    access to adequate sanitation.

    And those conditions are

expected to get worse as theclimate changes and global

    populations continue to rise.

El Cercado is a small town close to the Haitian border. With

a population of approximately 30,000, the town has become acentre for 15 rural communities composed of 60 villages. Tisarea had water systems installed in the past, but many of themhad been damaged by storms, had fallen into disrepair or nolonger served the growing needs of the area.

Trough our partnership with Hermandad, Inc., theSisters of Charity were able to fund a project to repair andreconstruct the damaged systems, restoring proper watersupply to the area.

Our latest water project is located in theDominican Republic, and we are once againpleased to partner with Hermandad, Inc.

Los Corocitos is a farming village. Over the years, the community has partially constructed sectionsof a water system, including some private tapsand distribution lines. Tis new project will addto the communitys efforts by providing a deeper

well and a 12,000-gallon storage tank. It will alsoconnect the existing lines to create a cohesivewater system.

As is the case with all of our water projects, membersof the local community will be involved. Tey willcontinue to provide labour throughout the projectto help offset costs, and they will be educated onthe proper long-term maintenance of the system.Hygiene workshops will also be held to help the entirecommunity improve its health and well-being.

Te final cost of this project is estimated to be$18,000, and will benefit 750 people in 120 homes.
