of people over 65 and/or for people who are under 65. It has been for carers from diverse communities who need the support provided in targeted culturally appropriate ways. Often the support provided hasn’t been significant in terms of the number of hours or the costs involved.
We hear from carers all the time about how small things can and do make a big difference. The peace of mind carers get from knowing they can talk to us, that we can do something to support them, at a time when they need the support, is important.
Receiving a call from one of our telephone support Volunteers who asks ‘How are you going?’ is very important for many carers.
Yet how simple a thing is this to make a person feel that they matter. This is what Carer Support has always been about and how and why we do what we do. You care for someone, we care for you.
Therefore, listening to our carers’ needs and then doing all we can to provide that support has been our goal. It’s our mission. And it will continue to be going into the future. Carers are individuals who

Welcome to the latest edition of the Sharing Sheet. For quite some time there has been talk within Government, local communities and organisations like Carer Support about carers. How will carers be recognised? How will we provide support for them and by who? And, how will services to carers be funded going forward?
With this in mind, I would like to discuss carers and the type of support needed by them and why.
Carer Support as an organisation was established some 24 years ago and we now care for over 7,500 people. It has worked tirelessly for and with many carers and their families over the years, providing support in ways that make a difference to them. The type of support provided has been vast and varied but the planning for support has always been with the involvement and feedback from our carers.
It’s important to us to know what’s important to you.
This has included face to face support for carers calling into our offices and talking to us about where you’re at and the issues you’re dealing with. It has been through organising support groups for carers within your local community, or organising carer’s days out like a pampering day, a carer retreat, an information session or a “looking after yourself” style course. It has been through providing both in and out-of home respite. It has been through supporting carers and their families in times of emergency. It has been through organising and facilitating camps for young carers to go to during school holidays or for mentoring or tutoring support. It has been for carers

do amazing work in caring for their loved one, neighbour or friend. These people in our community need to be recognised and supported in their own right. They deserve access to support in ways that continue to make a difference to their lives while providing this service in the most effective and least intrusive manner possible.
The talk throughout the community services sector has been about all of the above and how best to offer the support carers need.
I would have thought that the model that Carer Support has been committed to for the past 24 years would be a great place to start.
As always I am happy to speak to any carer about any matters that you feel are important to you. Please look after yourself and take time for you.

TRANSPORT FOR CARERSCarer Support provides various services designed to make it easier for carers to care. We listen to your personal situation and tailor appropriate services to your needs.
However, the provision of transport to help carers attend activities and events organised by Carer Support has been an issue for some years.
We know that procedures and practices for transport have varied over the years, with changes influenced by budget pressures, carer demands and other factors too numerous to list.
Carer Support may be able to help you attend events and groups in situations where you are unable to get there yourself. Please enquire with our Support Admin team when making your booking.
A fantastic day was had by carers, their care recipient and families. As always the food at Spargo’s was outstanding providing either lunch or dinner before or after the movie. The movies on offer proved popular with each family and the younger kids loved the ‘Planes’ backpacks. As you can see from the photos everyone had a great time and we look forward to doing it all again in 2015.

She was approached to put her name down to learn to make one of these
Rocking Horses from ‘scratch’. She was interested but hesitant and felt confident that there were several names on the list that she would not be called for some time. Part of her motivation was the knowledge that learning a new skill assists in maintaining your brain health and contributes to maintaining memory.
Luck would have it that her name went to the top of the list as the other people cancelled or postponed their lesson. Next thing she knew she was accepted into the workshop and embarked on a journey that was both challenging and rewarding. Over the next 8 months she learnt to use tools and equipment (saws, drills and much more) that she had never used before while she cut out individual pieces of wood for the horse and its stand, metal work and leather work and painting. These were all new things to master.
Being a petite person was an extra challenge sometimes requiring Elizabeth to use a bench to elevate her in order to complete the work. Her instructor was encouraging, supportive and positive as Elizabeth rose to each and every challenge. Working only one day a week for about 5 hours was at times exhausting, but always rewarding.
Elizabeth had been a full time carer for her mother-in-law and when she moved into residential care this activity provided a form of therapy and relaxation now that Elizabeth was no longer responsible for her mother-in-law’s 24 hour care needs. She says this project taught her new skills and to overcome challenges. It led to a strong sense of personal achievement. Subsequently this built up her self-confidence and motivation to do more in her day to day life.
Moving ForwardElizabeth took a big leap into the unknown after taking a walk through the local Mall and seeing a partly completed wooden horse on display.
Keeping connected during the Christmas periodCarers Hope and Recovery Team
The Christmas and New Year holiday period can be a time of warmth and
connectedness. It can also become a time of tension and stress. If you are caring for someone with mental illness you may need to be more vigilant or aware how they are managing through these peak times.
Research shows that at this time of the year people living with mental illness may be more at risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviour. Increasing your contact with the person you care for during this period, through informal supports such as family or friends, is important. Being aware of the formal supports that are available and being willing to either encourage and support your person to access them or being prepared to access them on their behalf if necessary, is also important.
Caring for someone who you hold safety concerns for is difficult and there are formal services that can support you as carer.
Here are contact details for formal services:
If you need someone to attend the home immediately, phone 000 – for police or ambulance.
Remember when you call to:
“Stay focused, stay relevant, stay on the line.”
Mental health emergency call 13 14 65 available 24 hours, seven days a week.
If the person you care for is not at imminent risk but would benefit from phone support or if you need support in your caring role:
Lifeline 13 11 14 is a nationally recognised and long-established community service. It provides a 24 hour telephone crisis support service, 365 days a year. It also provides an online Crisis Chat service from 8pm to 4am (AEST) every day.
Suicide call-back 24 hour service 1300 659 467 is for people feeling at risk of suicide; people who are caring for someone who is suicidal; or people who have lost someone to suicide.Reference: “SANE Suicide Prevention and Recovery Guide” available at: http://www.sane.org/suicide-prevention-and-recovery-guide

RELINQUISHING THE CARING ROLEAt Carer Support we recognise Elizabeth still has a caring role as her mother-in-law’s key support person and advocate, even though she now lives in a nursing home. Elizabeth continues to be welcome to attend our carer groups and activities. She is no longer eligible for our short term, emergency or occasional respite funding, as she is not caring for her mother-in-law in the community. It is lovely that she now has more free time for her own fun activities such as building a rocking horse from scratch! She is doing a very important thing – re-building a full life for herself as her caring role reduces.
We are very aware that people need support through and beyond the time they are in a caring role. Our view is that a carer becomes a past carer when their loved one has passed away or when they have stopped providing any informal care to their family member or friend for other reasons.
This change in role can be a traumatic time and Carer Support will always be with carers to listen and support them through this new phase in their lives. Carers are such wonderful giving people that it can be hard initially to pick up the reins of a life after caring, but it can also give opportunities for fulfilment in other ways. We would love to hear other carers’ encouraging stories about the journey of reducing or moving away from their caring role.
The finished piece
“Time for me!”“How I take care of myself outside of my caring role.”
JESSE IS 17 YEARS OLD AND CARES FOR A YOUNGER BROTHER.Jesse likes playing footy but he takes care of himself by catching up with friends!
“Being involved with Raw Energy gives me a sense of belonging - just being out with young carer friends and knowing there are lots of people who can help him make me feel that I’m not alone.”
Jesse’s advice: “Be strong!”
JAY IS 17 YEARS OLD AND HAS A CARING ROLE FOR HER MOTHER. Jay believes that going to school everyday, doing activities such as reading and cooking plus having a focus on “my time”, is how she takes care of herself and has a break from her caring role. For someone who has been in a caring role for over 10 years, she has some sound advice:
“Stay strong and talk to people…ask for help when you need it”.
Jay shared with us that a lot has changed for her since being involved with Raw Energy at Carer Support.
“It feels like a family and helps me to enjoy the time out.”
MATT IS 17 YEARS OLD AND HAS A CARING ROLE FOR HIS OLDER BROTHER. Matt likes to be active, loves soccer, footy and a whole range of other sports. Matt described how Raw Energy supports him and his family. He lost all of his grand parents when he was young, but his involvement with Raw Energy has given him “somewhere else to go”.
Being with all the guys at Raw Energy helps him “take off the responsibility that comes with the caring role and leave behind the stress that goes with it.”
He states that he has been in Raw Energy since he was five, and “…their support has been excellent!”. Matt described his
experiences of being bullied at school because of his disabled brother. Bullying can cause anxiety, but Matt now believes that as hard as it was to deal with this negative treatment, it has made him a strong and mature person, and taught him how to take everything in a positive way.
His sage advice includes:
“Never let another person get you down, be strong and always think positively!”
RHYS IS 16 YEARS OLD AND IS PRIMARY CARER FOR HIS MOTHER. Rhys’s passion is for sport, especially ice hockey. Raw Energy activities provide the break that he needs. He has lots of responsibility as he is the only support his mum at home. School has not been the easiest or most enjoyable experience for Rhys and he has reached a point where he is exploring alternative pathways as he charts a future for himself while managing his caring role. “Raw Energy support really helps me!”
Rhys advice: “Be strong!”
ISSY IS 15 YEARS OLD AND HAS A CARING ROLE FOR HER SISTER. Issy has hobbies she enjoys which include making script letters. She has recently joined a trampolining club, so she can have a little time for herself.
Being home is like having to care for her sister 24/7, but when she is at Raw Energy activities “…it helps take the caring thoughts away, and it feels great just being among other people”.
She has been in Raw Energy for quite a long time and she appreciates the support she gets, because it gives her “…the freedom to be her self and being away from home feels good.”
Issy’s advice: “Be strong and keep having the helping spirit because those people we are caring for need us.”

Individual appointments are also made with interested families, to discuss
their particular situations in more detail with our NDIS coordinators, and letters explaining Carer Support’s services are provided for families to take to initial meetings with their NDIS planner.
There are two ways Carer Support is currently able to assist families, once they are included in the NDIS plan:
Financial Management (Financial Intermediary Activities):
Carer Support will:
1. Organise providers and their payment.
2. Pay expense claims.
3. Provide monthly statements for participants.
4. Claim from the National Disability Insurance Agency for payments made on behalf of families.
Care Coordination (Service Intermediary Activities):
Carer Support uses a shared and secure personal online management system for each family, for all or some of the following:
1. Document management system – setting up a database of reports, medical forms and invoices.
2. Coordinating therapies and appointments via a calendar that includes appointment reminders for the family via email or text.
3. Tasks and other online services.
The next NDIS Information Session will be held on Tuesday 3 February 2015 at Southern Carer Support Centre from 12noon-2pm. There will be peer-support coffee catch-ups organised at our Southern and Eastern offices so that you can meet other families who are going through the process of accessing the NDIS.
Updates for monthly information sessions and peer-support coffee catch-ups will be posted regularly on our Website and Facebook.
If you have any queries in the meantime, please contact Carly White on 08 8379 5777 or email us at [email protected]
NDIS Information SessionsCarer Support has monthly NDIS information morning and afternoon teas at our Southern and Eastern Carer Centres. These are well attended by families currently accessing the National Disability Insurance Scheme, or looking to access NDIS in the near future.

One of our members recently wrote “When we sing we release ourselves
from the pressures of everyday life. Many who care for loved ones often have feelings of anxiety. However, when they sing together, they are participating in an event in which care-giving is not the sole focus. It allows people to share and enjoy precious moments with each other.”Singing along with the words offers additional benefits, including keeping minds active. [And] Music is an essential way with communicating with other people and the wider community.
It is the goal of The Caring Choir to allow carers and those they care for to find their voices in singing, and to help increase awareness in the community about caring and being cared for.
We are an easy-going group welcoming
all ages of people in care with their carers to give expression to the joy we have within – the joy that can be sometimes hard to find or express.
No singing experience is needed – everyone has a voice, and the diversity of our abilities and interests in music add to the colourfulness of our musical collage. If you are shy, it is not necessary to take part in our occasional performances.
The Caring Choir meets weekly during term times at the Rosefield Uniting Church, 2 Carlton Street, Highgate, at 1.30pm on Wednesdays, and after singing we enjoy afternoon tea together, finishing at about 3.30pm. We ask $2.50 per session from those who can afford it. Once a month, for those who don’t want to be regular choir members, but still enjoy singing

well-known songs, we have sing-a-longs open to anyone. These sing-a-longs are on the month’s first Wednesday, at the same time and place as the weekly sessions. Words for all the songs are provided.

Staying cool during Summer is important. Extreme heat poses
an elevated risk to the health and wellbeing of carers, their families and care recipients. While we can’t predict what will happen with our weather for Summer 2015, we can assure you that we will take good care of you and cancel outdoor carer activities if the temperature is predicted to be over 36 degrees. If the event day is predicted to be over 40 degrees, we will cancel indoor events as well. This is for the protection and comfort of all attendees.
Cancellation of an event will take place two days prior to the event and while Carer Support will advise attendees, if you are unsure, please call 8379 5777.
It’s important to be aware of this when booking to attend a Summer event.
Even more so, please stay in touch with us on the day of the event if the temperature soars.
Summer Heat ConsiderationsPlease take care of yourself during these extreme heat days whether at an event or not. Drink plenty of water, stay indoors and take cool baths. Use your air-conditioners and fans, or even visit close by public facilities such as shopping centres, community centres and libraries during the daytime if you can, but go there in the morning before it gets very hot.

How to Book
The Wildlife @ Woodstock Carer/Caree Day Out was a resounding success.
Everyone who attended loved the peaceful surroundings, food and excellent service. Many commented that it was such a good opportunity for “time out” and they contrasted it to the “pressure” that they sometimes experienced in their daily life. People felt “at ease” in the lovely soothing ambience of the Woodstock Estate where they could “unwind and be nurtured”.
Many people took advantage of the ‘bottomless’ tea and coffee on arrival and sat around tables on the verandah where they could take in the view of the magnificent gum trees and listen to the sounds of many of the native birds. It was an opportunity to unwind and chat to
other people. The day was enhanced by the perfect weather – sunshine, blue skies with light puffy clouds.
Twelve people had the opportunity to feed the kangaroos with bottles and also apples. People were keen to photograph this event and many laughs were had by all watching this activity.
Some people took advantage of the availability of wine tasting throughout the day, stocking up on their home supplies or just tasting some different wines for future reference.
The food was ‘5 Star Contemporary Australian Cuisine’ and people agreed that it did more than live up to its reputation. The entrée of soup of duck cassoulet was
PAST EVENT – CARER & CAREE DAY OUT, 28 AUGUST 2014
Wildlife & Wine @ Woodstocka hot topic of conversation with some people getting the name of the butcher (Ellis in McLaren Vale) in order to purchase some duck for themselves. The main course of Aged Lamb Cutlets and Snapper were both highly complimented.
However, the ‘big hit of the day’ was the Hazelnut Chocolate Tart with comments such as:
“This is heaven!”“Wow, I want this recipe!”
As the pictures reveal, people left with broad smiles on their faces and an obvious state of peacefulness. A few vowing to return to this place in the near future with family or even on their own to relax and unwind.

We are proposing to head down South on March 27th, 28th and 29th 2015; however this time our base will be a new venue – Port Elliot Beach House YHA.
EVENTS
Whole of Family Camp
The Family Camp is an annual event that is very popular with our carers.
Places are extremely limited for this two night stay in luxury cabin accommodation. In 2015 the camp will be held at Adelaide Shores Resort at West Beach, adjacent to the Caravan Park. The resort boasts multiple fun filled options for the kids to swim and play in lovely surroundings. This is a great opportunity to connect with other families who care for a child/children with a disability.
Please contact us as soon as possible to register your families’ interest and you will be contacted by Support Staff after the RSVP date. Places will be allocated in the first instance to families who have not attended in previous years.
This is an Expression of Interest only and you will be contacted by Support Staff after the RSVP date.

The weekend will include going to No. 58 Cellar Door & Gallery for lunch and some wine tasting on Saturday, and on the Sunday we have planned an all day Fishing Adventure on Fish Stalker 2, a 50 foot vessel, which always guarantees a great day out for all.
If you don’t want to take part in either the visit to the winery or the fishing trip, there are plenty of local attractions on offer, including the Port Elliot Market on Saturday, a day trip to Victor Harbor, visiting local cafes or restaurants, or even just walking along the beach. Trips to No. 58 and Fishing Charter will be serviced by our allocation of company vehicles, which is included in the cost.
