admissions, )

To be admitted to polytechnic diploma courses….

* Exception is for Nursing courses, which requires a net ELR2B2 aggregate of28 points or better.

The student will need to meet TWO eligibility criteria:

1. A net ELR2B2 (English Language, two Relevant (R) subjects and two Best (B) subjects including CCA Bonus points) aggregate score of 26 points or better*; and

2. The subject-specific Minimum Entry Requirements (MERs) for the specific course.

EL R2 B2English Language Two Relevant Subjects Two Best Subjects

The student will need to obtain a net

ELR2B2 aggregate score of 26 points

or better*

The student will need to take relevant subjects depending on the course type

There are 4 course types – A, B, C, and D, and courses are

broadly categorised according to their nature

A Humanities or Media courses B Business courses

CEngineering, Science, Facility Management or IT courses

DArchitecture or design courses

To be admitted to polytechnic diploma courses….

To be admitted to polytechnic diploma courses….Besides meeting the minimum net

ELR2B2 aggregate score, the student

will need to meet the subject-

specific Minimum Entry

Requirements (MERs) for

the course

This is to ensure the student have the necessary

proficiency to cope with the academic demands for the

course, e.g. Science subjects for Science-related courses

To be admitted to polytechnic diploma courses….

The subject-specific MERs stipulate the subjects that are required and the minimum grades required for each subject

Subjects that are relevant to the course, and typically comprise

subjects relevant to the course type The grades that students

would need to obtain for each subject to be eligible for the

course

Existing Example - Mass Media Management (NYP)

Existing Example – Digital Design & Development (RP)

From 2024 intake, students applying

for admissions to the polytechnics will generally need to meet three subject-specific MERs

In general, the subject-specific MERs will comprise three subjects*:

a. English Language

a. Two relevant subjects drawn from the R subject list for the associated course type

Note: The subject-specific MERs for admissions in AY2024 will be available in 2023.

POSSIBLE IMPLICATIONS

• Although the student will need to meet grade requirementsfor fewer subjects for a significant number of courses, it doesnot mean that it will be easier to enter the polytechnics.

• As the subject-specific MERs will be more aligned to the Rsubjects lists, the student will need to do well in the Rsubjects to be eligible for the course, and also obtain a netELR2B2 aggregate score of 26 points. For example, thestudent will need to do well in your science subjects forcourses in category C.

• Admissions will continue to be based on merit in opencompetition with other applicants, as well as availablevacancies in each course.

• The student is encouraged to look at the polytechnic

course requirements for the courses he/she is interested

in, to have a better understanding of what the courses

require.

• The student may wish to choose his/her Sec 3 subject

options based on the course requirements, taking into

consideration his/her interests and aptitude in the school

subjects as well.

YOUR CHILD’S JOURNEY• Your child may have an occupational pathway in mind • Or he may gradually discover what he

would like to do as a future career• Either way, encouraging him to find out more about the

work and its environment will be helpful

Do you know:

• Your child’s dreams and

aspirations?

• Your child’s interests, strengths,

and what he or she is

passionate about?

• What your child wants to be

when he grows up?Resource can be found on HYSS website school info for parents, Education and Career guide.

HELP YOUR CHILD EXPLORE

47

What are your child’s strengths, interests, learning styles and passion?

1. Whoam I?

“WHAT ARE YOUR CHILD’S STRENGTHS?”

• If your child enjoys a subject, he is likely to do well in it because being interested in something engages and motivates him.

• It is a good enough reason to study a subject he simply enjoys; it is in fact all the more critical if he does not have a career prospect in mind as yet.

Importance of Subjects Awareness

Make Informed Decisions and Own Them.

Make decisions based on your interests, attributes, and aspirations,

while considering current and future career opportunities.

Take ownership of your goals, and take stepstowards fulfilling them.

Make considered decisions about your education and career plans, then take positive steps to embark on them.

ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO BE PROACTIVE

• Create opportunities for your child to speak with relatives or neighbours who are in various occupations

• Encourage him to interact with people on the job (e.g., retailers when shopping, nurses/doctors when visiting the clinic) to find out more out about their work

• Allow him the flexibility to explore different industries if he is looking for part time work during the holidays

ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO BE PROACTIVE

• Enthuse him to read the newspapers and listen to the

news to be more aware of new industries and

opportunities out there

• Encourage him to visit open houses (usually held in

January every year) to speak with seniors and lecturers

to find out more about the courses

REMIND YOUR CHILDNot to choose subjects because

• The combination of subjects sounds prestigious

• many perceive it will lead to good pay

• of a friend/teacher/parent/guardian

Support your child in making informed choices in his education and career pathways!
