A Message From PRESIDENT & CEO MELANIE HALL

Serving others brings joy, both to the server and to the one being served. It

is a shared gift. This time of year provides the chance to reflect on those who

serve others and the impact they have had on our lives. We are grateful for their

dedication and self-sacrifice. They inspire us to reach out and serve others too.

During this holiday season may we be mindful of the needs of others. For some

people, this is a joyous time. For others, this season brings sorrow. For others,

it is a mixture of both. If this holiday season is challenging for you, know that

Hospice of Huntington is here to help. A phone call to our office is all it takes to

find help during this time. It is our honor to serve you.

MELANIE HALL | President & CEO

A CAMP FOR CHILDREN WHO HAVE EXPERI-ENCED THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE

Finding laughter through the tears. April 28 & 29, 2018Howell’s Mill Christian Assembly Camp | Ona, WV

Camp Good Grief turns 24 in 2018! This year we are doing things differently. In hopes of reaching not only bereaved children in our area, we want to reach out to their families as well. Thus we are hosting our first ever Camp Good Grief / Good Family Retreat weekend on April 28th and 29th, 2018.

On Saturday, April 28th we will hold our Camp Good Grief from 9 am until 4:30 pm for children ages 6 to 16. During this day the children will attend multiple sessions on grief and discuss different things they have faced or may face in regards to their grief. They will also participate in fun team building exercises as well as make a memorial craft.

Then on Sunday, April 29th we will invite the children back along with their families for our Good Grief Family Retreat from 9 am until 2:30 pm. This day will be spent learning about how families grieve by acknowledging both their similarities and differences. We will host family sessions covering communication and feelings associated with grief. Lunch will be provided both days along with light snacks. There is no cost to attend, but space is limited and applications for campers and families will be received on a first come first serve basis. Daycare provided for kids under age 5.

24 years!

Sally was a giver. In her ninety-nine years, she’d given support to her husband Jim, as they built one of Huntington’s iconic restaurants: Jim’s Steak & Spaghetti House. She gave to her three children, Jimmie, Larry, and Ron, as well as to her large tribe of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also gave of herself to the Huntington community and many of its civic organizations: Hospice of Huntington, The Huntington Symphony Orchestra, American Cancer Society, Musical Arts Guild, the Pediatric Clinic, her church, Fifth Avenue Baptist, Contact, and Reach for Recovery. So, it’s not hard to imagine, that if the tables had been turned, it would have been Sally on the giving side of her last experience with Hospice.

Sally was also a positive person. Born July 16, 1917, she grew up in and lived in Beckley, West Virginia, until she married Jim Tweel and moved to Huntington. She lived by several pithy sayings, which she drilled into her children, and which they printed as tokens that were distributed at her funeral in September 2016: “No one knows what he can do until he tries it.” “He who shoots beneath the stars, shoots too low,” and “There’s nothing to it if you just get up and do.”

Those sayings sustained her when as a younger woman, she served on the Hospice of Huntington Board of Directors, worked in the gift shop as a volunteer, and participated in fundraising for the organization. And those sayings also describe the attitudes of those Hospice caregivers who tended to Sally. She was dedicated to Hospice knowing well the relief families had felt when Hospice entered the picture. For Sally’s family, having Hospice’s in-home care at the end was important. She’d always said she wanted to die in her bed in the home she and Jim had built together. Hospice of Huntington provided that wish.

cover story

According to her oldest son, Larry, about six months before she died, the family realized more medically-oriented care was now needed. “Because of mother’s physical and mental limitations we had caregivers 24/7 for several years. They took great care of her, but as she worsened we found she needed more support. A Hospice of Huntington nurse visited her each week to see what she needed, check on her diet, check her blood pressure, and check her medicines to see if they needed to be adjusted. She had many urinary tract infections in the last eight years. Sometimes, they affect you mentally, so we needed help medically. The private duty caregivers that had worked for us were absolutely fantastic, but they were not medically trained, and we needed someone’s help once a week to tell us what we really needed to do. Once Hospice of Huntington came in, it relieved a great burden from Jimmie, Ron, me and the caregivers.”

“The thing about Hospice,” Larry says, “it’s a great organization; they have a beautiful house (The Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House), and they are well organized; but the key to the organization, so far as we are concerned, is the nurses who came out weekly to visit with Mother. Several people in particular, a nurse and a social worker, kidded around with her, kept everything on the upbeat, and made us feel comfortable with how we were caring for Mother in her last months. That was a warm, wonderful feeling.” Both Jimmie and Larry praise Hospice of Huntington’s staff and volunteers for the support they provided to them, even when the information they imparted wasn’t what the family wanted to hear. “They told you what to expect, and then what to do. They’d say, ‘Take a deep breath, and you’ll get through it.’”

So why don’t even more families avail themselves of the home-based services? “I don’t think enough of the population know that it’s available,” says Jimmie. “I think people have this association with Hospice as only bringing a loved one to the [Emogene Dolin Jones] Hospice House two days

from dying, and because they think that’s (Hospice) a death sentence, they don’t do it. I just don’t think people are aware you can bring Hospice into your house.”

“I want to emphasize how awesome that was. We were so comfortable knowing that we could be at work and know Mother was being taken care of and that the caregivers had care, too. It was very comforting to know Hospice was going to come in every week, and tell us we were doing a good job,” said Jimmie. Larry nodded, and then added, “While Mother never articulated it, we could see in her eyes that it was comforting for her to be in her own bed, her own bathroom.” In turn that gave solace to the Tweels. The in-home services provided by Hospice had allowed them to approach the end of her life knowing she had quality care, and would die with dignity.
