With this edition of SHARE we bothcontinue on our single-minded purpose to tellthe stories of mission and also, we break newground.

Our purpose is reflected in the themefor this edition, Mobilizing for Mission, andexpresses the belief that mission does not justhappen. Rather, it is something that we needto be intentional about at each and every oneof our local churches as well as for each andevery member of those churches.

Where we go and what we do inmission needs careful thought and thoroughpreparation. Mission is not just a destinationor a mere project; it is about engaging peoplein a real partnership in Gods mission. Itdemands that we acquaint ourselves withthe context of our shared work. This includesinforming ourselves about the culture of thepeople among whom we will live and serve, aswell as their history, economy, politics, faithexpressions, and their joys and their struggles.

This theme is also meant to remind usthat mission is at the very heart of our livesas disciples of Jesus Christ. We are calledtogether so that we can be equipped to serve. We gather for worship so that we can be moreeffective disciples when we disperse. We are

stewards (not possessors) of a great gospel that is meant to beshared and offered to a hurt and broken world.

The stories told in this edition will give you an insight tochurches that are delighting in this approach to Christian discipleship and reaping the benefits of this engagement in wonderful ways. There is absolutely no reason why your church cannot be a part ofthis journey of faith in similar ways. Please use the services of ouroffice to help shape you and your churchs mission involvement. Weare here to serve you in any way that we can!

In telling all these stories, we also break new ground in thisedition: we have taken SHARE online as its primary source of

distribution. Part of the reason for this is financial: the cost ofproducing, printing and mailing some 7,500 copies of SHARE hasbecome harder to absorb in a time when our Conference budgetsare, of necessity, being adjusted to deal with all the realities we allface. The other part is effectiveness in communicating the message:going online can help us adapt our format to include videos, morepictures, more detailed articles for further reading, and also forfeedback and comments.

We will be reworking our format more and more as we goforward. WE value your suggestions and ideas and are, as always,so grateful for your faithful support of this ministry and of Gods

    mission.

Yours for the joy of serving this great mission

    Mobilizing for Mission SHARE SPRING

    by Rev. Kristen L. Brown

GBGM missionary to Palestine and Israel

The Methodist Liaison Office in Jerusalem is a partnership

of the World Methodist Council, the Methodist Church of Britain

and the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist

    Church.

In October 2012, a team from these three groups came to

Palestine and Israel to meet partners and to officially launch the

opening of the new Methodist Liaison Office.

The United Methodist Church has had a long history of presence

in Palestine and Israel, though we do not have a church and have held

office space with other churches over the years, we now have our

own office. The office is located at Tantur, an ecumenical theological

institute, in the library. We have two office rooms overlooking

Jerusalem. Tantur is close to the Bethlehem checkpoint, so it is

very convenient for groups to come for a visit on their way into

Bethlehem. In our effort to engage the world Methodist family in Christs

ministry of peace, justice, truth, and mercy among all peoples

living in this land in partnership with the Palestinian Christian

community, the following mission and context are taken into

    account.

    Mission

The Methodist Liaison Office will (in the Wesleyan tradition):

Resource the world Methodist family for informed active

    engagement and advocacy,

Connect with local initiatives supported by Methodist and

    ecumenical partners,

Encourage and facilitate theological reflection and

    dialogue,

Facilitate visits for pilgrims and volunteers to experience

    and be transformed.

    Context

The Methodist family, through the World Council of Churches,

maintains a tradition of ecumenism, supporting the ministries of

the historic churches in this region. The Methodist presence is also

building interfaith relations with Jewish and Muslim communities.

Methodists from around the world, particularly those who visitthe region, are increasingly aware of the political realities affecting

Palestinians and Israelis. Methodists have heard the call of the indigenous

Christian community as outlined in the Kairos Palestine document. I

welcome you to come and see, come and hear, come and taste, come and

be present with the local Christians and others in this context.

My work as a MissionaryMy name is Modesto Carlos Ramirez Romero and I am a missionary for

the General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM) of The United Methodist

Church. Originally, I am from Puebla, Mexico (a city 2 1/2 hours southeast

of Mexico City). My wife, Wendi Neal, and I are ordained clergy in the Oklahoma

Annual Conference. We have two children, Miguel (5) and Citlali (2).

While I am still a member of the Oklahoma Annual Conference, I have

been appointed to serve as a missionary under GBGM. My work consists of

    three different components:

    1) The coordinator for Hispanic/Latino Ministry.

In this area of service, I focus on strengthening the current Spanish-

speaking congregations we have in Oklahoma (there are currently

five), and developing leadership and strategies to start new faith

communities. We have over 30 participants in leadership training

that will accomplish our two priorities (strengthening churches andto raise leadership). In order for us to start new faith communities,

we are partnering with non-Hispanic churches to reach out to the

Hispanic/Latino population. We are on our way to start two new

places of ministry in the Oklahoma City metro area by the fall of 2013.

    2) Cultural Bridge.

I try to interpret expectations and give cultural insights both in

the Hispanic and Non-Hispanic worlds. I am also helping to develop

deeper understandings and relationships with Spanish-speaking

countries of North, Central and South America. This part of my job

has already taken me to Colombia and Mexico and in the future to

Bolivia and Nicaragua. In Colombia we are developing a plan that will

allow us to assist the Colombian Methodist Church with pastoral

training, formation and continuing education; as well as, VIM teams

where the focus so far is building adequate structures for service

to the community (childrens afterschool programs, women and men

gatherings, health clinics, etc.) and f or worship services on Sundays.

    3) Ethnic Minorities.

GBGM has started a pilot approach to do ethnic minority work. I amworking closely with our African-American and Asian brothers and

sisters in order to develop similar plans as those for Hispanic/Lat ino.

It is hard work, but quite rewarding. I hope you

can help me to continue to serve people in Oklahoma and

beyond. I would be glad to talk in your church, Sunday

school class, or other organization. If travel is not possible,

I am always available online and we could have a virtual

    conversation.

Thank you for considering support of this important

ministry. My advance number is #3021528. You can

The following summary of the tripis by the team leader, Dr. JonathanBryan:

Our assignment was in Source-a-Philippe (SAP), a small fishing villageof 500 on the southwest side of LaGonave, the large island on the Bay.Arriving in SAP was like stepping backin time. Waiting at the dock, were thesmiling faces of our Methodist hosts. The clinic building is quite impressive. We had ample leadership from within thecommunity, from the local pastors and

Weslyne, the community nurse, who is the primary clinician inthe absence of medical volunteers.

Our mission in SAP was greatly assisted by Dr. John

Harbottles (UMVIM medical coordinator in Haiti) planning. Ourmedical resources were plentiful. In the current model teamsare discouraged from bringing medicines into Haiti, (which is ablessing). All medicines were bought from local Haitian vendorsprior to our trip. The hope is for the clinic to provide long-termquality care rather than simply be a medical mission wherenothing is handed out but short-term antibiotics.

Our team was tasked with documenting population data forpediatric patients to assess SAPs (mal)nutrition status. Mypastor, Rev. Linda Harker who has extensive mission experience, pulled me aside prior to the trip to say how excited she wasbecause the opportunity to develop relationships on a medicalmission is so different than any other mission experience.

Our experience in SAP through UMVIM Haiti confirmed herobservation.

    Volunteers In Mission

www.okvim.orgThe past few years have seen a reduction

in VIM team numbers and in sizes of teams as the U.S.

economic recession has impacted the work. Fortunately, we

saw the beginning of a turnaround in 2012, with an increase

of about 35 teams over 2011.

Our major loss of teams has occurred in the work

with Manos Juntas Mexico, our longtime partner in Rio

Bravo, Mexico. This is because of perceptions about drug-related violence in that country, but we can report that

the ministry there has not been affected in any way, nor

have any of our teams been threatened. The loss of almost

90 percent of the teams that participated in this work has

resulted in staff layoff s and a refocusing of this ministry.

We believe it is crucial for us to re-engage in this work and

help our partner move forward in this vital effort. (seerelated story on page 19 of this magazine)

VIM also is focusing on a major revision of its

medical missions. Previously most of our medical teams

have participated in needs-based relief efforts through

offering short-term health and dental clinics. Now, we willbe shifting our emphasis to an asset-based developmental

model, in which the teams will help communities improve

their long-term health needs through education and

skill development. Clinics will continue to be offered (as

the obvious immediate needs of the community must be

addressed), but long-term needs will be addressed through

what is known as the community-based primary health care

model. Existing and new team leaders will be encouraged

to familiarize themselves with this model, and training

and even on-site experience will be offered.(see relatedstory on page 11 of this magazine)

    Oklahoma Disaster Response

This has been a season of local and national disasters that

stretched our response efforts across the board. Here in

Oklahoma, we had to deal with vast fires that caused major

damage. While we continue to work all over the state in

response to these disasters, we have a major commitment

to the work in Creek County. Sterling work by our Disaster

Response lead staff person, Rev. Richard Norman,

enabled us to obtain a $100,000 grant from UMCOR for

the ongoing relief and rebuilding effort in that county. A

case management office in Mannford is now staf fed by

three people, with numerous volunteers also involved,

as we assist the residents in repairs and rebuilding of

their homes. (see related story on page 14 of this

    magazine)

    Youth Force

This exciting ministry involving our Conference youth

members continues to thrive each summer as a number of

sites around the state welcome teams of young volunteers

to work on home repair and renewal projects. A steering

committee is now in place, led by Keith King and other

    deans at the various sites.

    Bolivian/Oklahoma

    Partnership

We note here that Rev. David Stephensons continued

excellent work in sustaining and further developing our

relationship with The Methodist Church in Bolivia allows

us to pursue opportunities for ministry and mission with

other ministries of the Office, especially Hispanic/Latino

    Ministry. (www.bokp.org)

    Hispanic/Latino Ministry

The General Board of Global Ministries appointed Carlos

Ramirez as a missionary to serve here in Oklahoma under

GBGMs Hispanic/Latino Plan. Our bishop, Robert E. Hayes

Jr., assigned Rev. Ramirez to the Office of Mission, where

he operates as an associate director. His primary task isto develop UM Hispanic/Latino work within the state, but

he also will assist in the work of OKVIM throughout Latin

America, as well as help to develop a Conference-wide

strategy connecting all ethnic minority ministry.
