Marjorie WuestnerExecutive Director of Health, Safety,Physical Education and Sports AdministrationSchool District of Philadelphia (retired)Philadelphia, PA

Marjorie Wuestner feels very blessed to have worked with students, families, educators, coaches, administrators and community groups in the School District of Philadelphia (SDP) for 42 years.

Being able to make a difference in many young lives, and seeing the joy of accomplishment and gratification propelled Marjorie to give children, teachers and coaches, the best programs she could in health, physical education and athletics.

In her last position, as an Executive Director for Health, Safety, Physical Education and Sports Administration, she provided children with state-of-the-art athletic and physical education facilities, similar to those seen in affluent suburban schools. Lots of planning, negotiating, stubbornness, pleading and praying led to her school superintendent agreeing to float a bond, so that she could budget an additional $30,000,000 for new construction and restoration of gymnasiums and fields.

Marjorie consistently held herself and others to high standards. She maintained…“If you have high expectations for yourself, your students or athletes, you can achieve anything.”

Having such high expectations led to a 400% increase in college scholarships being offered to SDP minority student-athletes from 2004 to 2007. Marjorie rebuilt the existing historical, 109 year-old SDP athletic infrastructure, to support a new initiative to join the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA), for the very first time in history. Hiring a NCAA Compliance Officer, recruiting coaches, and working to increase media awareness, led to these successes. Consequently, student-athletes and their families became aware that, with lots of effort and determination, they could look forward to new opportunities in life…and the sky was the limit!
