Today’s Melbourne has been shaped by Committee initiatives including:

• Creating a connected regional hub by growing our international flight capacity.

• Building a vibrant waterfront community at Docklands.

• Adding to our reputation as Australia’s capital for arts and culture with Melbourne Festival.

• Helping move people and freight across the city more efficiently with CityLink and the Western Ring Road.

• Introducing our architectural treasures to a new audience with Open House Melbourne.

• Progressing medical technology and health innovation through the BioMelbourne Network.

We raise critical issues to influence the debate on Melbourne’s future development.

The expertise of our varied membership informs our policy positions, and our input is valued by political leaders, the media, the business community and civic leaders. Recent Committee initiatives include:

PRIORITISING INFRASTRUCTURE

The Committee has long advocated for an independent infrastructure prioritisation entity. Our 2015 discussion paper The case for an independent Infrastructure Victoria outlined best practice principles for independence, accountability and transparency.

The Andrews Government delivered on its election commitment and established Infrastructure Victoria in September 2015. Key principles raised in our paper were reflected in its establishment as a source of independent, transparent advice on infrastructure projects and priorities.

INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION

International students contribute economic prosperity and cultural diversity to Melbourne and Victoria.

Our 2015 report Melbourne – a prosperous future: World-leading international student city analysed our proposition and identified priority focus areas and practical initiatives to further enhance the city’s status as a major international student destination.

MELBOURNE METRO RAIL PROJECT AND GRADE SEPARATION

The Committee supports unlocking the capacity of our public transport system by removing bottlenecks around the City Loop and inner core, and removing level crossings.

The Andrews Government has committed to start significant works on the Melbourne Metro rail project by 2018, and grade separation is planned on 50 level crossings.

VICTORIA’S DIGITAL FUTURE

The economic benefits of open data were articulated in the Committee’s 2014 submission to government, which outlined the need for a well-developed, agile and pro-active policy approach from government that recognises this technological innovation as the ‘new normal’. The Committee will continue to work on the implications of the digital economy for Melbourne.

BETTER APARTMENTS

With our city set to double in size to eight million people by mid-century, we need to get smarter about urban development.

Apartment living is an increasingly important element of Melbourne’s housing mix, and our submission to government outlined guiding principles to maintain the balance between development and liveability.

MOVING MELBOURNE

Like every city growing in a fiscally constrained environment, Melbourne needs to examine innovative funding and financing mechanisms for infrastructure investment.

The Committee’s Moving Melbourne report offered approaches for the government and private sector to lift productivity and urban value by planning for our future transport needs today.

FUTURE ECONOMY

This will be a priority focus for the Committee in years to come. A strong, globally competitive economy underpins Melbourne’s ongoing growth. Our economy continues to transition from its manufacturing base to a services hub that’s internationally competitive.

The rise in professional services, the domestic and international war for talent, productivity challenges, digital disruption and technological innovation will continue to shape our economic competitiveness.

INFRASTRUCTURE

The Committee will continue to build on its infrastructure agenda that is critical to Melbourne’s liveability, productive capacity, and innovation.

We will expand on our successful advocacy for better planning and delivery of infrastructure projects that effectively move people, freight, and utilities around our growing city.

The right projects are as important as the right funding. We will keep on providing a strong voice for innovative mechanisms to finance development.

URBAN OPTIMISATION

Our prized liveability depends on having an appropriate blend of housing options that are well-connected to community services and the jobs that will power our economic growth.

Using a multi-disciplinary approach, the Committee will submit practical ideas for dealing effectively with the key challenges of urban infill versus urban sprawl, housing affordability, community connectivity, and support services.

LIVEABILITY

Melbourne was ranked the ‘World’s Most Liveable City’ by the Economist Intelligence Unit in 2015, for the fifth year running.

Our liveability enhances our reputation as an internationally appealing, safe and welcoming city.

To maintain our coveted mantle as the most liveable city, we must continue to provide exceptional healthcare, education, sport and recreation services.

Melbourne is already known as Australia’s cultural capital, and we support greater emphasis on our arts, design and cultural assets.

TRANSPORT SERIES

This year’s Transport Series will uncover the challenges and opportunities of our city’s transport system. A panel of key players in the transport sector will outline their master plans for our transport network as our city grows.

The series will include forums on roads, public transport, air transport and the role of technology – all contributing to the Committee’s report on an integrated transport vision based on member input.

ANNUAL DINNER

The Committee’s annual dinner is Melbourne’s premier black tie business networking event. Held in some of the city’s most iconic venues, the Committee hosts more than 500 members, guests, and dignitaries for a spectacular evening celebrating our great city.

Recent venues have included North Melbourne’s Laurens Hall, the playing surface of Margaret Court Arena, and the stage of Arts Centre Melbourne’s State Theatre.

PARLIAMENTARY DRINKS

The Committee’s annual event at Parliament House is an informal opportunity for Foundation members to network with members of Parliament. Premier Daniel Andrews, Treasurer Tim Pallas and Leader of the Opposition Matthew Guy were joined at the 2015 event by over 30 other MPs for an evening of conversation and networking. This year’s parliamentary drinks will be held in late October.

HOSTING

As part of the Committee for Melbourne’s benefits, we provide our members with the opportunity to host events. Members are approached to host an event in kind as an occasion to showcase their organisation to our broad membership base and provide a platform for the topic of discussion and the guest speaker.

Melbourne’s future depends on inspired, informed, and experienced leadership. To create the next generation of civic-minded leaders, the Committee established the Future Focus Group business and civic leadership program in 1996.

The Future Focus Group is Melbourne’s only dedicated leadership development program for emerging leaders from business, government, academia and the not-for-profit sector.

The program attracts participants from every sector of the Committee’s membership base. The combination of participants creates an incubator of ideas and builds networks that will secure Melbourne’s future success.

Over 20 years, this unique program has fostered practical leadership skills by providing project-based, real-life learning experiences and unique access to senior business and community leaders.

We look forward to building on our 400 strong alumni network. They are a new generation of leaders making a contribution to our city.
