    Educational research writing

      is

      like other forms

     of

     writing

      in

     many respects Here

is one of them— a good research article rnust grab yo ur attention right away. In  addi-

    tion a

     good

     research

     article

     will let you

     know what

     it is all

     about

     a s

     soon

     as it

     can.

    Good titles

      an d

     good opening

     paragraphs an d

     statements address both

     o f

     these

    goals

    A

good title will capture you r interest

    or at

     least

     let you

     know

     if the

      article

      is

aimed at a reader like you or not. Furthermore a good title will tell you quite a bit

    about

     i ts

      article.

      It

     will

     not

only reveal content—m ore often  than not

    it

     will tell

     yo u

something about the  manner  in which  the

      research

     was  conducted. The  opening

points are  even more directed toward your potential desire  to  read  t he  article. In the

very beginning researchers  often  make their case for why you should read

      their

research in the first point. All researchers

     feel

their research is important . The  best

researchers  make their work  as clear as they  can while  convincing you  that this

research ought to be  important to you as

     well.

      ractíce

     Makes

      erfect

    It

is now time to practice som e of the ¡nsights and

      ski l ls

      you have

      explored

      ¡n

      this

    chapter.  First

     o f

      all

    yo u

      need

      to

     turn

     to the l i teratura. I t

     should

      be

     easy

     t o find

     journa ls

    with

      primary art ic les that

     are

      ¡nteresting

     to

     you.

     Gather

      together

      about  three to

      four

art icles   that you can  understand  to  some degree based on  your  knowledge of the

    field.

     Now do the following:

      Identify

      the

     t it le

     type for

      each art ic le.

      Do not worry about

      covering

      all

      types.

Just  see i f you can handle the act of  labeling  real t it les.

    •  Each of  th ese art ic les

      also

has an opening. Can you  ident i fy their openings?

    Again do not

     worry about

      covering all  types of  openings.

    • If  possible shar e your   results with  your c lassmates.

     What

sor ts  of  t it les  and

    openings

      did you

      f ind? Were some types

     of

      t it les

     and

      openings more common

than oth ers? Did these various types

      seem

to  depend  on the content and form

of the art ic les or the topics covered?
