Museum of Newport Irish HistoryShamrocks & Seashells

Irish eyes were smiling at the 8th annual Shamrocks & Seashells benefit for the Museum of Newport Irish History, which was held at Easton’s Beach Rotunda Ballroom. More than 150

guests celebrated Irish history, heritage and fellowship over car-ousel rides, traditional Irish music by The Exiles, and Irish-inspired food offerings such as “Luck of the Irish Skewers”—a passed hors d’oeuvre comprised of corned beef, Brussels sprouts, potato, onion and carrot. The event, which also featured nationally acclaimed Irish step-dancer, Kevin T. Doyle, held its most successful silent auction by offering 52 items for bid. The most popular were items of Irish interest, including a two-night stay on Ireland’s Dingle Peninsula, Celtic design silver pendant and matching earrings by J.H. Breakell, and a sterling silver shell and shamrock necklace from Duris Studios. Mike Slein, president of the board of directors says, “The evening was a memorable and festive ‘gathering of the clan,’ recalling the contributions of the Irish to our beautiful city, Newport, and the traditions of Irish dance, song, food and laughter.” -JH

Benefit a Blast at the BeachOne-hundred and fifty Museum of Newport Irish

History supporters gathered at Easton’s Beach Rotun-da ballroom on Sept. 23 for “Shamrocks & Seashells,” the annual benefit for the museum’s Interpretive Cen-ter. Guests enjoyed a bagpiper greeting, traditional Irish music by “The Exiles,” featuring award-winning Irish step dancer, Kevin Doyle. Impromptu ballad singing and dancing by inspired guests added to the evening’s festive mood. Vintage carousel rides, cre-ative cuisine by Kitchen Companion Catering, and an extensive silent auction, which included stays on Ireland’s Dingle Peninsula, overnights at top Newport hotels, and tickets to a N.Y. Giants game rounded out the evening.

Proceeds from the benefit will defray operating ex-penses of the museum’s Interpretive Center and fund enhancements to Center displays. The Museum of Newport Irish History is a nonprofit, volunteer-run or-ganization of 800 members. Founded in 1996, its mis-sion is to tell the story of Irish immigrants in Newport County from the 1600s to the present, to preserve ar-tifacts and mementos of their experience and to facili-tate research into Irish heritage.

The Center, at 648 Thames Street, is open until Oct. 29, from noon-5 p.m., Thursday through Sunday. Tours at other times may be arranged by appoint-ment.
