The Shamong TownshipSchool District’s tentative budgetsent to the county superintendentis pointing toward higher taxesfor residents.

On March 17, the board of edu-cation approved a tentative budg-et for the 2015-2016 school yearthat includes a tax increase of $100.80 on the $308,080 average as-sessed value of homes in Sha-mong Township with a total taxrate of $1.3989 per $100 of as-sessed value.

The tax levy from townshipresidents last year was $8.19 mil-lion. The total tax levy increasefor this year is $418,248.

The board of education adopt-ed an operating budget of $13.75million, an increase of $360,458from last year.

“The district will be complet-ing $2 million of capital projectsover the summer months. Thiswas funded through School Devel-opment Authority Grants and alease purchase agreement budget-ed in the 2015-2016 budget,” Good-win said.

A new reading program called“Journeys” is budgeted for thethird and fourth grade. The Jour-neys program is a core readingprogram designed to meet the di-verse needs of all students, fromkindergarten through grade six.It includes the key elements of

reading instruction, from com-prehension to decodable readers.

“Journeys” was piloted thisschool year in the fifth grade andis used by many neighboring dis-tricts. The “Journeys” programis aligned to the Common CoreStandards and provides central-ized resources.

In other news:• All current teaching positions

are also budgeted for in 2015-2016.No new positions will be addednext year.

• There were contractual salaryincreases, health-care cost in-creased, and increases were bud-geted for gas and electric.

• There are five capital projectstargeted for completion over thesummer. At IMMS, the districtwill be replacing exterior doorsand security upgrades. At IMS, itwill be replacing windows in thesecond-grade wing, as well asdoing security upgrades and put-ting air conditioning in the in-structional areas. These capitalprojects are being funded throughthe 2015-2016 budget as well asgrant money from the School De-velopment Authority, Goodwinsaid.

YMCA Camp Ockanickon, Inc.has named John Rath, owner of Safeguard Business Systems, asthe 2015 campaign chair of its an-

nual campaign, the biggestfundraising initiative of the year.The money raised from the cam-paign provides scholarships tochildren who otherwise wouldnot be able to afford all that thecamp has to offer.

As the chairperson of the an-nual campaign, Rath will the leadthe charge to reach the campaigngoal of $255,000. This year’s kick-off breakfast will be held onWednesday, April 15 from 7:30 to

9:30 a.m. at the Camp OckanickonDining Hall.

and reading resources. NEA's nationalreading celebration takes place each yearon March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss.Across the country, thousands of schools,libraries and community centers partici-pate by bringing together kids, teens andbooks.

Indian Mills Elementary School's kick-off Read Across America assembly was atruly Seussational day! Last November,while attending the New Jersey EducationAssociation's annual convention, SherryDuBoff, a K-4 Response to Interventionteacher, entered a contest to win a Cat in

the Hat visit.In January, she was notified that Indian

Mills Elementary School won the contest,with the visit scheduled for Feb. 23.

NJEA's “Cat in the Hat” is portrayed bya retired teacher who dons a professional

costume.Once put on, the “Cat” stands over seven

feet tall. That is quite an imposing figurefor elementary school students and teach-ers alike.

The “Cat” exploded into the assembly;danced and high-fived the students during

a sing-along; followed by a school-widechant of the Reader's Oath.In the end, the “Cat” presented Indian

Mills Elementary School with its own auto-graphed copy of “Horton Hears a Who” forthe school library. And, as the good doctoralways said, “You can find magic whereveryou look. Six back and relax, all you need isa good book."

After the “Cat” left, the Indian Mills Me-morial School's Drama Club, comprised of students from grades five through eight,presented Dr. Seuss skits and visited theclassrooms to read to the students. The

week-long celebration included themedress-up days, poster and trivia contests,and even green eggs and ham in the cafete-ria on Dr. Seuss's birthday. It was truly aSeussational week at Indian Mills Elemen-tary School.

Ok, so the survey in question –

“the Best and Worst States to

Retire,” compiled by

Bankrate.com – didn’t exactly find

that you’d be out of your mind to re-

tire in New Jersey, but it did rank the

Garden State near the bottom of the

list of desirable places to spend the lat-ter portion of your life.

This should not be a shock.

The survey ranks New Jersey 45th

on the list of best places to retire,

based on the fact that the cost of living

is high (45th), the community well

being is low (43rd) and the tax rate is

very high (49th). These factors out-

weight the low crime rate (eighth) andthe above-average weather and health-

care quality.

There’s a reason why so many New

Jerseyans retire elsewhere – it’s

cheaper. And cheaper is better, be-

cause most people would rather see

their hard-earned money go toward

vacations than taxes, for example.

Many retirees go to Florida not just for

the weather but for the absence of a

state income tax.

Maybe if New Jersey was more af-

fordable, more elderly residents would

stay at home, near their friends and

family. But since it’s not, many don’t.

We are probably not the only oneswho laughed when we pondered where

in New Jersey – other than, say, a

beach town such as Ocean City –

would be a “good” place to retire. And

that’s a shame, and a problem all at the

same time.

Our residents shouldn’t have to pre-

pare to leave when they retire.
