SLEEP POD

LOCATION: LONDONSITE: HEATHROW AIRPORTTARGET MARKET: TRAVELLERS

Sleep Pods are spaces which are dedicated to travellers, to spend time in whilst they are waiting to board their flight. The intention was to create a Pod, which was simple and straightforward in design. In this concept function takes over form, as the design only consists of the necessary elements needed. The structural body of the Pod is important as the design is built around this. Assemble ideas were explored to find ways in which several of these Pods can be connected together. Two types of assemble ideas are used. Where space is tight, a compact design is put in place where three Pods are connected together by the edge. On the other hand where large amount of space is available, four alternating Pods are connected together in a linear fashion.

LOCATION: LONDONSITE: SOUTH ROADTARGET MARKET: BAG SHOPPERS

Given an empty premises, this project was an opportunity to design and create a retail space of choice. The concept is to take an organic shape found in nature and convert it into the space, in this case it was a split gill mush-room. The mushroom gills are converted into irregular patterned beams which make up the foundation of the shop as they surround the entire area. This is constructed out of a light coloured wood which gives the space a natural feel. Display stands for the bags are placed around the shop in clusters, just as how mushrooms are found. Using the same patterned beam, these are now converted into the stands which differ in height and width. Glass surfaces of uniquely cut shapes are placed on top to support the bags.

Artist Incubator is a space created for young artists andentrepreneurs who are interested in gaining publicity and selling their work. Inspiration came from the idea of nests, which are seen as incubators themselves. Designed to nurture and protect, they reflect the theme strongly of preparing the students for the outside world. The space is built up of irregular shaped blocks which are repetitively constructed and used as display stands for the artist’s work. These blocks differ in height and width, and can be arranged in various ways. The idea is to allow the artist to design the space according to their own needs, consequently resulting in the endless configurations of the shapes.

LOCATION: WELWYN GARDEN CITYSITE: POLYCELL FACTORYTARGET MARKET: YOUNG ADULTS

‘Welwyn Edge’ is a hub designed for socializing and increasing the interaction of young adults in Welwyn Garden City. Inspiration came from a blocked game called ‘Tetris’. Carrying this forward the space was designed following a cubic theme of various shapes. The design involves enlarging the blocks and using them to create volumes of space, allowing them to become both structural elements and inhabitable furniture. Despite the open plan layout, glass barriers are used to control the space and provide division where needed. Each area is identified by a specific colour which is applied only on the top surfaces of the shapes. The blocks used are of two types; hollow wood blocks and contrasting polyurethane foam solid blocks.
