Dear Friends: The ceremony of Confirmation is our way of celebrating the Festival of Shavuot. That festival begins at sundown, June 7 th and our Confirmation will take place on the preceding Shabbat Eve, June 3 rd . The Service will begin, as usual, at 7:30 p.m. and it will mean many things to many people. To the parents it will be a very special ceremony because their son or their daughter will share in conduct- ing it. To the Confirmands it will mark the end of a long year of study and rehearsal. To relatives and friends and congregants it will be a spectacle of youngsters as they search the faces on the pulpit and the names in the program, attempting to put the two together. To me it will be a traumatic event marking the close of another year that has been both failure and success – frustration and fulfill- ment, as I tried to help them understand the meaning of it all. All of the forces leading to Confirmation will meet and merge that night – from the parents with whom I spoke a few weeks ago asking their children to leave the class if they could not participate in it in a manner even approaching maturity and good manners to the Confirmand who told me in tears that this has been the most meaningful year of her life – and I have not the slightest doubt that our service will be extremely beautiful. Indeed, I hope that it will be meaningful for all our youngsters as well. I hope the Confirmands, at least, will grasp the meaning of the moment. They know already what it is supposed to mean. That evening I hope they feel the meaning as it becomes part of them. But what is the meaning of it all? We have been told that the children of Israel stood at the foot of Sinai waiting to receive the Ten Commandments. They stood there in the shadow of Sinai, waiting for Moses to bring to them the covenant of God. And as they stood there, they declared, “All that the Lord requires na-aseh v’nish-mah – we shall do and we shall hear.” In short, they were confirming themselves into the heritage they were about to receive. On Confirmation evening, our sons and our daughters in the Confirmation Class will confirm themselves within the faith of Juda- ism. Confirm themselves. No word of mine will do it. Only the mood and the meaning of that evening. That evening they re-enact the dream of Sinai and 3500 years surround them with all the love and all the hope and all the prayers that we who stand on the sidelines can muster. Come. Share the evening with us. It is – in every sense – a family matter. Yours sincerely, Stephen H. Pinsky Nisan / Iyyar 5771| May 2011 Rabbi’s Voice Rabbi Stephen H. Pinsky

Shavuot occurs on the sixth day of the Hebrew month of Sivan. The name Shavuot means weeks and refers to the seven weeks following Passover. In the Torah it is also designated by the names Chag Hakatsir, the Harvest Festival (Exodus 23:16), and Chag Habikurim, the Festival of First Fruits (Exodus 34:22). Clearly, the Torah references are to a harvest festival when the farmers would make pilgrimage to Jerusalem to offer a tithe of their first fruits/first barley grains to the Temple. Before the building of the First Temple, which was completed around 950 B.C.E. by King Solomon, Shavuot was probably not celebrated. In the Talmud, the festival takes on two additional names. One is Atzeret, which is the same name as is linked to the day after Sukkot. By association this could indicate that the Rabbis viewed Shavuot as the end of Pesach, or at least the end of a significant period of observance. The second name is Z’man Matan Torateinu, which means the time of the re-ceiving of the Torah. There is a Rabbinic tendency to tie every festival to an historic event. They justified this connection between Shavuot and receiving Torah on an interpretation of Exodus 19:1 which states: “On the third new moon after the Israelites had gone forth from the land of Egypt, on that very day, they entered the wilderness of Sinai.” Unlike Pesach and Sukkot, there is no distinctive ceremony that marks the celebration of Shavuot in the synagogue. In many congregations, it is customary to decorate the sanctuary with flowers and plants in honor of the festival and as a remembrance of the agricultural ori-gins of Shavuot. The Book of Ruth is read because the story of Ruth and Boaz takes place during the spring, at the time of the barley harvest, and is a fitting selection for Shavuot. The custom most commonly associated with Shavuot is the ceremony of Confirmation. The festival of Shavuot, because of its association with the giving of Torah, has been linked with the study of Torah. The ceremony of Confirmation was introduced by Reform Juda-ism in the early part of the nineteenth century in Europe and was brought to the United States about mid-century. In this ceremony, the now maturing student “confirms” a com-mitment to Judaism and to Jewish life. Our Confirmation Service this year will be held Fri-day, June 3, 2011 at 7:30 PM. Another Shavuot custom is to eat dairy products. Rabbinic tradition draws an analogy be-tween the sweetness and physical nourishment the Jew receives from milk and honey (Song of Songs 4:11) to the sweetness and spiritual nourishment of the words of Torah. For more than a century, the Reform movement has marked the anniversary of the giving of Torah at Mount Sinai with Confirmation. But Shavuot is not only for our youngsters. There is a custom of stating up the entire night of Shavuot studying Torah with the com-munity. Developed by sixteenth-century Kabbalists (mystics) in Safed, the Tikkun Leil Sha-vuot (the all night study sessions on the evening of Shavuot) originally consisted of a set or-der of text study, including selections from the Bible and from Rabbinic and mystical litera-ture. Kabbalists believed that the giving of the Ten Commandments symbolized the mar-riage between God and Israel and that by studying the evening before Shavuot, they were symbolically preparing Israel to enter into a sacred relationship with God. Today the study helps intensify and personalize the experience of revelation for contemporary Jews. By stud-ying Torah, as well as talmudic, mystical, and modern texts, and adding our own interpreta-tions, we remind ourselves that revelation continues throughout Jewish history to this day. Cantor’s Voice Cantor Carrie Barry

It has been six months since I last submitted an article for the Shalom. In that time, I kept busy easing Eli’s transition into the world. It has not been a simple journey. With a milk protein allergy, reflux and colic, Eli gave Ian and me a run for our money. The crying was so loud (and constant) at times that Blake developed a stutter for a month! I am thrilled to re-port, however, that we have emerged triumphant at the end of that rather dark tunnel. Eli is now all smiles all the time. He is the happy and healthy boy we knew would eventually make an appearance. And our little man? Blake is a proud, gentle, caring and protective big brother… who has returned to speaking normally. I would like to thank some individuals who made the last few months much easier for me and for my family. First of all, thank you to Cantor Wood. You take over seamlessly. I always know that I can trust you with students and services. What a relief it is to be able to leave with the knowledge that nothing will fall through the cracks. Rabbi Pinsky, I know what it means to you to have me back on the bimah and in the office. You’re a good sport. Mazel tov on making it through two pregnancies and two maternity leaves. You deserve a prize. I’ll remember that when your birthday rolls around (for those of you reading this, May 11). You have my love always. Dov Fahrer, Tammy Smith, Amy Bergman, Mitch Marcus, the Temple Beth Torah Band, and the Cast and Crew of the Purim Spiel: thank you, thank you, thank you! What remarkable work you did! The production was thoroughly enjoy-able. I hope you all plan to join me next year! Meredith Hirschberg and Carol Garrett, thank you so very much for making sure our youth did not have to go with-out music. You are both truly talented and it meant so much to me that I did not have to worry about our preschool and religious school music programs. My choir: thank you for your patience. I know how much you would like to be singing. It is my goal, this coming

year, to make sure that happens once again.

To Jodi and Sandy: thank you for understanding my desire to be at home with my babies while I could…and for be-ing so thrilled upon my return that I couldn’t help but be thrilled and full of enthusiasm as well. Thank you to the LeGates Family, the Sanita Family, the Kappel Family and the Blecher Family for understanding my absence at your family simchas. I missed you all and wished I could have been on the bimah with you as Sam, Jordan, Stacy and Rafi became B’nai Mitzvah. Mazel tov! Last, but certainly not least, thank you to the entire congregation. I cannot imagine a more loving and supportive community. I speak for Ian, Blake, Eli and myself when I say we are truly blessed to be a part of this temple family. B’shirah, Cantor Carrie Barry

The Wisdom of Why

Phyllis Weinstein QUESTION: Why is the Torah parchment attached to rollers? ANSWER to May question. Why is red rather than white wine served during the Seder meal? Red wine is traditionally served at the Seder table because the Talmud considers red wine superior to white wine However, considering we are in the 21st century, many rabbinic authorities accept and encourage white wine to be used. The use of red wine still predominates..

Where have the past nine months gone? It hardly seems possible that we are almost at the end of our preschool year and in a few short weeks, we will graduate 39 children from our Pre-K program. This exciting and heartwarming graduation ceremo-ny (the twentieth such ceremony in the storied history of our preschool) will take place on Thursday, May 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. Family, friends and congregants are welcome to share in the festivities planned for that evening, and we hope that all will attend. It is hard to describe the feelings of nachas shared by all in attendance when our preschool children march down the aisle in their mortarboard caps, in the first of what we know will be many graduation ceremonies in their lives. The children will be performing some of their favorite songs and rituals, and the evening will culminate with surprise enter-tainment for the graduates and a dessert reception for everyone. Ticket information for this celebration will be forthcoming.

The final weeks of school will also be filled with numerous events and celebrations designed to give recogni-tion to the many individuals responsible for the success of this year’s preschool program. Teacher Appreciation Week and the Parent-Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast are among the events that we will commemorate this month. These are special events being planned to honor some very special people.

The children have been busy putting their creative touches on flowers, cards, sculptures and delicious snacks to “surprise” their moms who will be guests in the classrooms the first week in May. Among the many celebrations this month, our Mother’s Day activities generate the most hugs and kisses. Following our Mother’s Day celebrations will be our own Israel Independence Day parade complete with handmade Israeli flags and singing. This celebration will culminate with a snack of delicious blue and white birthday cake made by the children themselves.

Our fourth Tot Shabbat of the year, will be held on May 13, at 5:30pm. Led by Rabbi Pinsky and Cantor Bar-ry, this will be the last Tot Shabbat of the school year. At the Tot Shabbat service, we will honor our preschool teachers. We encourage all our young families to join us and please . . .bring your friends!!!

Preschool registration for the 2011-2012 school year is well under way. Once again, we will offer Voluntary PreK (VPK) for the new school year. On June 9, from 4-8pm we will host Family Central representatives to register all eligi-ble children for Voluntary PreK (VPK) for the new school year. If you know someone who may be interested in any of our programs or would like a tour of our school, please call our direct line at 793-2649 or stop by the preschool office. Even if you do not have a prospective student to bring by, we always welcome congregants to visit our school and attend our events to see first-hand what our wonderful school has to offer.

Registration for our “Summer of Fun” Enrichment Camp is in progress. Parents can customize a camp pro-gram by choosing 2, 3 or 5 day a week programs, for the full or half day. We will be accepting children from ages 2 to 6 years old to participate in our fun filled activities. This year, camp will feature popular weekly themes such as Animal Antics, Super Splash, I Love the Red, White and Blue, Over the Rainbow, Let’s Fly Away, Incredible Edibles, Dinosaur Detectives and County Fair. Refer a friend, and both families will receive fifty percent off the camp registration fee. Free Summer VPK is available to children entering kindergarten in the fall who have not previously been enrolled in a VPK program during the current school year.

Our National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) site visit is just around the corner. We have been in communication from our assessor and expect our NAEYC validation visit at some time during the last three weeks of the school year. Kudos to the entire preschool staff for their hard work and dedication, which has brought us to this critical point in the accreditation process! Preparing for this rigorous process while maintaining such a level of excellence in the preschool on a day-to-day basis speaks volumes about the quality of our teachers and staff members. SAVE THE DATE – May 22 We will be celebrating the closing of the school year on Sunday, May 22 with an encore presentation of our enter-taining and delicious Character Breakfast. Lots of excitement will fill the Social Hall as we dine with our favorite children’s characters. Word has it that we may see a princess, a superhero and/or a Disney friend or two. Expect photo ops, face paint-ing, a silent auction and more . . . additional information will be forthcoming.

May is going to be a busy month, to cap off a terrific school year. Join us at camp, and have a safe and happy sum-

mer!
