DURING THE COURSE of Macbeth, the

play’s troubled title character becomes a

traitor, a butcher, and a serial killer—all in

pursuit of the Scottish throne. It’s a role

actor Ethan Hawke has always wanted

to play, although the part terrified him

when he was younger. How would Hawke

prepare for this complex role that has

been performed millions of times over the

past 400 years by some of the theater’s

greatest actors including Laurence

Olivier, Orson Welles, and Patrick Stewart?

Find out in Shakespeare Uncovered, a new

six-part series that tells the remarkable

stories behind Shakespeare’s greatest

plays, revealing the potent impact they

continue to have today.

Combining history, biography, iconic

performances, new analysis, and the

personal passions of its celebrated hosts—

Hawke, Jeremy Irons, Derek Jacobi,

Trevor Nunn, Joely Richardson, and David

Tennant—it presents Shakespeare as

an impresario who, four centuries ago,

defined show business by drawing on

historical sources, bringing back popular

characters, and picking up dramatic ideas

from the news of the day.

The first film, Macbeth (Fri 25th, 9 p.m.),

follows Hawke (pictured on the cover) on

his quest to play the murderous Thane of

Cawdor, observing him as he researches

the real-life events that inspired the play.

He gleans extraordinary insights into the

criminal mind and the complex relation-

ship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth

by immersing himself in some of the most

memorable and innovative productions of

“the Scottish Play”—including the wildly

provocative recent Off-Broadway hit

Sleep No More.

Next, Joely Richardson and her moth-

er, Vanessa Redgrave, join forces for a

lively exploration of two of the Bard’s

most beloved comedies: Twelfth Night

& As You Like It (Fri 25th, 10 p.m.). They

investigate the legacy of these two bril-

liant cross-dressing comedies, exploring

the colorful comic and romantic heroines

populating them.

The series continues in February with

Richard II with Derek Jacobi (Feb 1st, 9

p.m.), Henry IV & Henry V with Jeremy

Irons (Feb 1st, 10 p.m.), Hamlet with David

Tennant (Feb 8th, 9 p.m.), and The Tempest

with Trevor Nunn (Feb 8th, 10 p.m.).

THE WAIT IS OVER! Downton Abbey

returns this month with a thrilling new

third season on Masterpiece—with Shirley

MacLaine joining the cast as Martha

Levinson, the very American mother of

Cora. Here in the States, Downton Abbey

has become a pop culture phenomenon,

inspiring viewing parties and fashion col-

lections, and attracting such celebrity

fans as Renée Fleming (pictured with

“I Heart Downton Abbey” sign), Angela

Lansbury, Josh Groban, Reba McEntire,

Katy Perry, and Martha Stewart.

Whether you’re on Team Upstairs or

Team Downstairs, we can all agree: We

heart Downton Abbey! So in the spirit of

Downton Abbey mania, THIRTEEN is col-

lecting photos of fans who want the world

to know their love of all things Downton

Abbey. Visit thirteen.org/downtonabbey

to peruse the image library (you may spot

a few celebrity fans in the mix), and don’t

forget to upload your own!

Downton Abbey devotees can also

enjoy a myriad of other exciting features

on this website. Count down the top five

moments of each episode, including

the Dowager Countess’s best zingers,

with the entertaining episode recap The

Downton Abbey Dish. Watch complete

episodes online, and with a special dona-

tion to THIRTEEN, you can get the first

three seasons of Downton Abbey on DVD

or Blu-ray.

But more importantly, what shall we wear

to Matthew and Lady Mary’s wedding?

“THIRTEEN has a long-standing tradition

of producing innovative arts program-

ming you won’t find anywhere else,”

said Stephen Segaller, Vice President of

Programming at WNET. “We’re proud to

take that tradition to extraordinary new

heights with a series that ventures beyond

biography and goes where no other TV

series on the subject has gone.”
