A NIGHT AT THE CINEMA IN 1914 + TALK

SUN 23 NOV, FROM 3.00PM, QFT

DIR: MISC • UK/US • 2014 • 1 HR 24 MINS • SHORT FILMS/ ARCHIVE

Cinema a century ago was a new and exciting form of entertainment. With feature films still rare, picture houses offered an ever-changing roster of short films with live musical accompaniment. Join us 100 years on as we recreate a night at the cinema in 1914 with a glorious miscellany of comedies, dramas, travelogues and newsreels, including a comic short about a face-pulling competition, scenes of Allied troops celebrating Christmas at the Front, and an early sighting of one of cinema’s greatest icons…

To mark the Centenary of World War One, we are proud to present this ongoing programme of films, talks and events, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Film was in its infancy when the Great War broke out – however it too played its part in the war effort, recording and documenting the events of the conflict, relaying news back to those on the home front and keeping the population at home informed, as well as entertained.

Running over the next six months at selected venues across Northern Ireland, our season of films, talks and events will explore how the events and the legacy of the Great War has been depicted on film; from screenings of classic films through to presentations of rare archive material.
