The monthly bulletin for Temple Emanu-El
Shabbat Shirah / Sabbath of SongFriday, January 18 at 5:45 p.m.
Our Sermon-in-Song features melodies commemorating the life and career of
Leonard Bernstein
A true legend, as a conductor, composer, author, pianist and lecturer – Leonard Bernstein inspired generations of composers, songwriters, singers and artists. Join us for this special Shabbat evening featuring
Cantor Jessica Roskin, with Monika Singletary, Lester Seigal, Daniel Seigal and Macey Rowland.
Special thanks to the Ruth & J.D. Rosenberger Music Fund and Mary K. Broadnax Music Fund, both of the Grafman Endowment Fund, for enhancing this special Shabbat of Song evening with a lovely oneg following.
Also, don’t miss our celebratory Grafman Legacy Luncheon,
"Happy 100th Birthday, Lenny!" scheduled on January 17. See details on page 2.
Our Mission: Temple Emanu-El nurtures our relationship with God by making Judaism come alive, welcoming all people to help them grow on their spiritual journeys, and bringing more love and kindness into the world.
PLEASE NOTE: The hearing aid loop devices are located on the tallit rack near the elevator on the sanctuary level.

Alternative Ways to include Our Temple in Your Estate Plans
Many members of our congregation have made provisions in their wills or
arranged for other types of planned gifts to benefit Temple Emanu-El. Their gifts were motivated by their commitment to perpetuate our Temple and leave a legacy
to support Reform Judaism in Birmingham for future generations.
There are a variety of ways for you to join those who have already given while protecting the interests of your primary
beneficiaries in your estate. In addition to simply selecting a dollar amount with which
you are comfortable, there a number of alternative approaches illustrated below:
Bequest Only If Estate is a Certain Size:“In the event the value of my estate
exceeds $000,000, I give and devise the sum of $00,000 to the Rabbi Grafman
Endowment Fund for Temple Emanu-El.” Bequest of Specific Percentage:
“I give and devise X % of my estate to Grafman Endowment Fund
for Temple Emanu-El.”
Bequest of Real Estate:“I give and devise the assets received from
the sale of my primary residence to Rabbi Grafman Endowment Fund
for Temple Emanu-El.”
It is also important for you to understand that gifts of part of your
IRA or retirement plan benefits may be the best source of funds for gifts to the Temple, since these funds are subject to both estate
and income taxation. The Temple will receive 100 percent of gifts from these funds, while your primary beneficiaries
may receive only 25-30 percent.
Your contributions through our “Temple Tributes” help to support Temple Emanu-El’s annual operations and activities, and further
build our Grafman Endowment Fund to enrich our congregation…now and forever.
To make a Tribute Gift to either a temple or an endowment fund, please contact the Endowment Office at 933-8397 or [email protected].
A list of all our funds is available on the back of the calendar insert in this bulletin, and on our website at www.ourtemple.org.

“Our Legacy Stories” is a beautiful online album of heartwarming stories highlighting many of our Temple Emanu-El congregational families who have designated a legacy gift to help
ensure a vibrant future for Temple. These gifts include both immediate endowment gifts and on-going support of our Annual Endowment Gift program, as well as future gifts designated via wills and estate plans.
These stories have been featured in our Endowment Fund Annual Reports, illustrating these congregant’s meaningful connection to Temple Emanu-El. They are also on the interactive recognition
wall outside the sanctuary, as well as on our Temple’s website. Most recently this fall, stories highlighting Meredith & Daniel Odrezin, Betty Allenberg Goldstein, and Jimmie & Emil Hess (both of blessed memory)
have been added. To view these stories just go to http://ourtemple.org/legacy-stories/.
Leaving Your Legacy: As we honor the visionary commitment of these thoughtful philanthropists, we hope, in turn, that others
will be inspired to follow their footsteps. Establishing your personal legacy gift of any size is welcomed — and will leave a unique and lasting imprint of your and/or your family’s deep connection to our
traditions, culture, values and congregation.
For more information on exploring the many ways to create your own legacy, please contact Jann Blitz, Executive Director of the Grafman Endowment Fund at 397-0814.
Additionally, several ideas of how to include the Temple in your estate plans are highlighted on page 12.
