In One World Magazine las ik een tijd geleden een interview met zuster Claudia Theinert die na jarenlang werkzaam te zijn geweest in de sloppenwijken van Manilla in 1997 weer terugkeerde in Nederland. Haar trof gelijk de haast van de mensen en meer nog de droevige en lege blikken in de ogen van de medepassagiers in de trein. Van de inwoners van de krotten wijken had ze geleerd wat leven betekent. Tegenover de materiële armoede hadden ze geleerd om levensvreugd te ontwikkelen om het leven de moeite waard te maken.

Wat dit met Studium Generale te maken heeft? In mijn werk kom ik ongelooflijk veel mensen tegen die zich niet bekom-meren om materiële welvaart. Zij ont- lenen levensvreugde aan het verrichten van wetenschappelijk onderzoek, het werken in de gezondheidszorg, het nadenken over een betere wereld, het zoeken naar schoonheid en naar het goede. In die zin ben ik een missionaris die week in week uit weer zelf nog het meest leert van de mensen die ik (samen met mijn collega’s) uitnodig voor ons programma.

In One World Magazine some time ago, I read an interview with Sister Claudia Theinert, who had returned to the Netherlands in 1997 after years of working in the slums of Manila. She was immediately struck by what a hurry people were in, and even more so by the sad, vacant looks in the eyes of her fellow passengers on the train. She had learnt the meaning of life from the inhabitants of the slums. In the face of material poverty, they had learnt to develop the joy of life, in order to make life worth living.

So what does this have to do with Studium Generale? In my job I meet an incredible number of people who are not concerned about material well-being.They find their joy of life in carrying out academic research, working in the healthcare sector, reflecting on a better world, and searching for beauty and goodness. In that sense, I am a missionary - still learning the most myself, week in week out, from the people I and my colleagues invite to join our program.

sophie van der stap is schrijver. In 2005 kreeg ze te horen dat ze kanker had. Van der Stap hield haar ervaringen met betrekking tot haar ziekte gedurende 54 weken bij in een weblog en een dagboek. Ze debuteerde in 2006 met haar roman Meisje met negen pruiken.

pauL van tongerenis hoogleraar wijsgerige ethiek aan de Radboud Universiteit in Nijmegen. Hij publiceerde onlangs: Leven is een kunst.

Muziek: Jawhar & shibatasDe Belgisch-Tunesische band Jawhar & Shibatas speelt een kruising tussen folk en soul. Met hun muziek willen de muzi-kanten de luisteraar meevoeren op een reis langs de seizoenen en de universele verlangens van alle mensen, met hun poëtische teksten hem een blik gunnen op oosterse en westerse talen, culturen en samenlevingen. Muziek als bron van vriendschap.

Presentatie: eLLen deckwitzis dichter, literatuurwetenschapper en performancekunstenaar. Ze won in 2009 de Meander Dichtprijs en het Nederlands Kampioenschap Poetry Slam. In het-zelfde jaar verbeterde ze het nationale record van slamoverwinningen.

Gespreksleiding: coen verbraak is journalist, programmamaker en inter-viewer. In 2009 begon hij het programma Kijken in de ziel, een reeks waarin promi-nenten binnen een specifieke beroeps-groep worden geïnterviewd over dit beroep en over hun eigen leven.

Gastsprekers: griet op de beeck is schrijver en publicist. Ze debuteerde in januari 2013 met Vele hemels boven de zevende, een roman over vijf verschil-lende mensen, met elkaar verwant, die stuntelend overeind proberen te blijven in dit lastige en prachtige leven.

Jan bor is filosoof, publicist, zenboeddhist en docent. En vooral bekend van zijn boe-ken over de geschiedenis van de filosofie en Oosterse filosofie.

Joep dohMen is onderzoeksjournalist en schrijver. In 1996 publiceerde hij De Vriendenrepu-bliek, over de nauwe band tussen de politiek en de bouwwereld in Limburg.

Het mag wat paradoxaal klinken, maar juist omdat we leven in een sterk geïndi-vidualiseerde, voortdurend veranderende wereld, hebben we, zo meent de Poolse denker Zygmunt Bauman, een grote be-hoefte aan echte vrienden. Aan mensen die we vertrouwen, die ons accepteren zoals we zijn en op wie we altijd kunnen rekenen. We wisselen steeds vaker van baan, we scheiden, relaties duren korter en zijn onzekerder. Het kost ons moeite ons vertrouwen in de sterk veranderde wereld te bewaren. Ook op de werkvloer, zegt Bauman, heerst wantrouwen. „Van vriendschap verwachten we stabiliteit in de onoverzichtelijke en voor veel mensen onbetrouwbare wereld.” De band tussen vrienden moet volgens Bauman de zeker-heid en het vertrouwen bieden dat we in de rest van de wereld niet meer vinden.

Bijna vijfentwintig eeuwen geleden werd Socrates in Athene, de bakermat van de democratie, ter dood veroordeeld wegens bederf van de jeugd en de introductie van nieuwe goden. Wie is toch deze raadselachtige man, die doorgaans de vader van de westerse wijsbegeerte wordt genoemd? Zelf heeft hij geen letter op het papyrus gezet, het is zijn leerling Plato die hem in de beroemde dialogen een hoofdrol toebedeelt. Daaruit blijkt dat Socrates als een verbeten waarheidszoeker de strijd aangaat met de eloquentie van de sofisten, maar ook dat hij als eerste denker indringend de vraag heeft gesteld hoe een mens gelukkig kan worden. Stimuleert de socratische methode echter de queeste naar een deugdzaam leven wel en ondermijnt de oude sater met zijn beruchte ironie niet

Op school leerden we dat de filosofie in Griekenland begon. Dat is maar ten dele zo. Ze begon tegelijkertijd in India en in China en bracht daar evenwaardige denktradities voort. In deze reeks begint Bor - vanwege het contrast ervan met de andere benaderingen - met de westerse filosofie en neemt hij Plato’s grot-vergelijking als uitgangspunt. De boeddhistische filosofie illustreert hij aan de hand van de vergelijking van de olifant en de blinden. De hindoeïstische filosofie, met de focus op de Vedanta, laat zich beeldend samenvatten in de vergelijking van een touw dat voor een slang wordt aangezien. De taoïstische filosofie begint Bor met het verhaal van Zhuangzi die droomde dat hij een vlinder was. In het laatste college behandelt hij de zen (ch’an), waarin boeddhisme en taoïsme samenkomen, met als treffend beeld dat van de lege spiegel.

Al deze vergelijkingen en beelden laten iets van de menselijke conditie zien, althans hoe daar in de verschillende benaderingen tegenaan gekeken wordt; de accenten zijn beduidend verschillend.

In deze aflevering van de Gezond heid-suniversiteit staan de hersenen centraal. Ze vormen de motor achter ons hele denken en doen.In deze reeks wordt de werking van dit fascinerende orgaan bestudeerd. Hoe maakt het ons dagelijks functioneren mogelijk? Daarnaast komen enkele veel voorkomende hersenaandoeningen aan bod en wordt ingegaan op de enorme gevolgen die zij kunnen hebben op het dagelijks leven. De Gezondheidsuniversiteit van het Maastricht UMC+ is een initiatief van studenten die hun kennis en vaardigheden graag willen delen met overige geïnteres-seerden. Elke avond begint met een col-lege door een expert. Daarna wordt er een casus voorgelegd, die in een mini-workshop met collega-studenten wordt behandeld. Er is geen specifieke voor-kennis nodig. Memoires van een overlevende van Westerbork en bergen­belsen Zo 4 mei, 16.00 uur Sint Janskerk, Vrijthof 24

Micha Gelber was vier jaar oud toen de Duitsers Nederland binnenvielen, bijna acht toen hij in Westerbork aankwam. Vijf maanden later werd hij, samen met zijn vader, moeder en oudere broer op transport gesteld naar concentratiekamp Bergen-Belsen. April 1945, kort voor het einde van WOII, maakt het gezin deel uit van het zogenaamde Verloren Transport. Een trein met daarin ruim tweeduizend gevangenen uit Bergen-Belsen wordt door de nazi’s oostwaarts afgevoerd. Op 23

april worden de gevangenen in de buurt van Tröbitz door de Russen bevrijd. Micha Gelber was toen tien jaar oud. Enkele jaren na de oorlog emigreerde Gelber met zijn familie naar Israël. Later keerde hij terug naar Nederland. Gelber is ac-tief betrokken bij het herdenken van de Holocaust. Hij is voorzitter van Stichting Comité Loods 24, de Rotterdamse depor-tatieplaats, en voorzitter van de Neder-landse tak van de vereniging Het Verloren Transport Bergen-Belsen - Tröbitz april 1945. struikelsteentjesGraag willen we het volgende project onder uw aandacht brengen. Gedurende de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn meer dan 350 inwoners uit Maastricht ge-deporteerd en vermoord door de Nazi’s: Joden, Sinti en Roma en politieke tegen-standers (verzetsstrijders) van het nazi-regime. Voor elk huis van waaruit iemand is gedeporteerd werd en wordt een steen-tje in het trottoir geplaatst met de naam, geboortejaar en de datum waarop hij/zij is vermoord. Hiermee wordt een blijvende herinnering gecreëerd voor deze slachtof-fers. Het is onderdeel van een Europees herinneringsproject van de Duitse kunstenaar Gunter Demnig.

de amygdala: een miskende grootheid Prof. dr. W. buikhuisen criminoloog, Spanje Di 11 maart, 20.00 uurAula Minderbroedersberg 4-6 Vanuit evolutionair biologisch perspec-tief zou men kunnen zeggen dat het in het leven gaat om overleven en het leven doorgeven. De amygdala, twee hersenkernen ter hoogte van de slaap-kwabben in ons brein, spelen daarbij van (zeer) oudsher een belangrijke rol. Als moderator sturen zij tal van vitale processen aan. Maar de amygdala zijn meer een zorghond dan een waak-hond. Zij sturen, dan wel weerhouden de mens ervan om bepaalde dingen te doen. Daarnaast kunnen slecht funtionerende amygdala een onge-wenst stempel drukken op het gedrag. Daarom treffen we ze aan in gevallen van ADHD, Borderline, Conduct Disor-ders, chronische jeugddelinquentie, PTSS, enz., maar ook bij blinde woede.De Homo Sapiens wordt dan weer de aloude Homo Primitivus met aan het stuur de amygdala.

Onze hersenen zijn in de laatste 3 miljoen jaar evolutie in grootte verdrievoudigd. Zo’n 20.000 tot 40.000 jaar geleden waren de hersenen bij de moderne mens zo ver ontwikkeld dat er een explosie van kunst kon ontstaan. Kunstenaars gebruiken al sinds mensenheugenis technieken die nu pas ontdekt worden als principes van perceptie in het brein en die hun basis hebben in de evolutie van hersenmechanismen. De essentie overdrijven en het groeperen en verbinden van fragmenten tot een coherent geheel, geeft een plezierig gevoel. Deze mechanismen hebben, net als het kleuren zien, evolutionaire voordelen. Neuro-esthetica is een nieuw onderzoeksveld dat zich bezighoudt met de hersenmechanismen die de basis zijn voor wat we als ‘mooi’ ervaren. Een aantal betrokken hersenstructuren en chemische boodschappers wordt besproken.

Dooms leidt het Multimedia Forensics-team aan de VUB. Multimedia Forensics, het klinkt als iets uit CSI. De expertise van het lab wordt onder meer toegepast op historische kunstwerken. Door reken-kundige operaties en transformaties toe te passen op gedigitaliseerde versies van schilderijen, kunnen de werken tot in de kleinste details in beeld worden gebracht. Deze wiskundige benadering van schilderijen laat toe om beschadigingen, details over de verf of onderliggende tekeningen op te sporen. Kennis die restaurateurs kunnen gebruiken bij herstellingen. De techniek wordt al toegepast op wereldberoemde schilderijen. Zo is het team van Dooms verantwoordelijk voor de detailanalyse die aan de restauratie van Het Lam Gods voorafgaat. Om het verhaal helemaal CSI-waardig te maken werkt Dooms samen met collega’s uit de Verenigde Staten. Samen willen ze nagaan of het mogelijk is om met behulp van wiskundige be-rekeningen vervalsingen te herkennen door de penseelstreken te analyseren als een soort vingerafdruk van de kunstenaar.

Dirk De Wachter toont aan hoe weinig verschil er is tussen patiënten en niet-patiënten. Hoe psychiatrie de spiegel is van de wereld waarin we leven. Zijn we allemaal ziek? Moeten we de hele wereld genezen? En vooral: was het vroeger allemaal beter? Tegenwoordig heeft iedereen borderline: vroeger was borderline onbekend, nu is het de meest gehanteerde diagnose. De Wachter illustreert vanavond zijn verhaal met voorbeelden uit het dagelijkse leven en met illustraties uit de literatuur (Michel Houellebecq) en de beeldende kunst (Helmut Stallaerts).

Het werk van de Frans-Algerijnse filosoof, romanschrijver en politiek activist Albert Camus (1913-1960) blijft steeds nieuwe generaties boeien. Hij maakte furore met o.a. De vreemdeling, De Pest en De mythe van Sisyphus. In 1957 won hij de Nobel-prijs voor de Literatuur. Op 7 november 2013 zou hij 100 jaar zijn geworden. Beroemd is zijn conflict met Jean-Paul Sartre, over de rol van het gebruik van geweld op weg naar een betere wereld. Camus toont zich in zijn werk als een denker tegen de hoop, die volgens hem in de geschiedenis van de mensheid steeds versteent, tot een religieus of politiek dogma wordt en dat zich tegen de mense-lijke realiteit keert. Waar het op aankomt, is te leven zonder hogere instantie, een gelukkig leven, zonder valse hoop.

Ruud Welten is auteur van verschillende publicaties over Camus en Sartre, waar-onder Zinvol Geweld. Sartre, Camus en Merleau-Ponty over terreur en terrorisme (Klement 2006).

Jan Boelslezingorchideeën op de mestvaalt, kunst en economie in 18e­eeuws Venetië Prof. dr. H. van osem. hoogleraar kunst- en cultuurgeschiedenis, Un. van Amsterdam Vr 21 maart, 18.00 uurAula Minderbroedersberg 4-6 Jan Boels promoveerde op 70-jarige leeftijd in 2012, vlak voor zijn overlijden, aan de UM op het proefschrift Joseph Schumpeter, honderd jaar economische ontwikkeling. Zijn familie heeft ter ere van hem de Jan Boelslezing ingesteld, die in de week van de TEFAF plaatsvindt. De eerste lezing wordt gehouden door Henk van Os, die hem persoonlijk heeft gekend. Vanavond verkent Van Os de geleidelijke teloorgang van Venetië in de 18e eeuw. Hij stelt daarbij de vraag hoe ondanks deze teloorgang de schilderkunst toch tot grote bloei is gekomen. Venetië heeft in die eeuw geniale kunstenaars als Tiepolo, Piazzetta, Canaletto en Guardi voor-tgebracht. Hun werken zijn orchideeën op een uitzichtloze mestvaalt. Hoe dat kan is de kernvraag van deze lezing.

DSM staat voor Diagnostic and Statis-tical Manual of Mental Disorders, ofwel Handboek voor de classificatie van psy-chische stoornissen. Omdat de psychia-trie ontzettend veel ziektebeelden kent en kenmerken elkaar overlappen, is het vaak moeilijk om vast te stellen aan welke ziekte een persoon lijdt. Inmiddels zijn we toe aan de DSM-5. Maar deze kan beter beschouwd worden als een cultureel fe-nomeen op zijn laatste been, dan als een diagnostisch systeem voor de GGZ. Nog voordat de Nederlandse vertaling is uitge-komen, lijkt deze zijn relevantie al te heb-ben verloren: veel mensen, zowel patiën-ten als hulpverleners en wetenschappers, willen een alternatief. De praktijk echter is weerbarstig. Niet alleen omdat de DSM inmiddels de bijbel is geworden van de zorgverzekeraars en andere bureaucra-tische krachten in de GGZ, maar vooral bij gebrek aan een acceptabel initiatief. Duitsland kent veel belangrijke filosofen van grote faam: Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, Kant en Hegel. Stuk voor stuk reuzen, maar wel allemaal van het oude stempel. Hoe staat het met Duitse filosofen van latere generaties? De in 2013 verschenen bundel De nieuwe Duitse filosofie onder-zoekt die vraag. Of we de nieuwe Duitse denkers hetzelfde formaat mogen toe-dichten als hun illustere voorgangers valt te bezien. Op deze avond lichten we er een paar uit. Van Oenen introduceert het werk van Robert Pfaller, een denker die pleit voor een vorm van ‘het goede leven’ waarin meer ruimte is voor het genot. Hartle spreekt over Duitse filosofie en media. Gabriëls gaat in op het werk van Jürgen Habermas, een filosoof in de tra-ditie van de kritische theorie en het prag-matisme en een vertegenwoordiger van de Frankfurter Schule. Na de introducties gaan ze in debat over de betekenis en het belang van de ‘nieuwe’ Duitse filosofie.

In 1989 ontwikkelt de Zweedse geronto-loog Lars Tornstam het begrip ‘gerotrans-cendentie’. De kosmische dimensie hier-van blijkt uit empirisch-wetenschappelijk onderzoek van Braam en anderen de enige te zijn met een bevredigende be-trouwbaarheid. Hieronder verstaan we een toegenomen besef van de mens van eenheid met het heelal, een veranderde ervaring van tijd, ruimte, leven en dood, en een groeiende betrokkenheid bij eer-dere en toekomstige generaties. Derkx staat stil bij de vraag of een toenemende behoefte bij ouderen aan transcendentie gezien moet worden als een beschrijving van een proces dat feitelijk altijd optreedt bij het ouder worden, of als een onder-deel van een normatieve visie op wat goed ouder worden is.

Bijna duizend exoplaneten zijn inmiddels ontdekt. Maar hoe worden deze planeten gevormd, en hoe gewoon is het dat planetenstelsels ontstaan? Lijken ze op ons eigen zonnestelsel, of zijn ze juist heel anders? Wat is de chemische samenstelling van het materiaal (water, organische verbindingen) waaruit de planeten worden gevormd? Immers, de elementen in ons lichaam, zoals koolstof en zuurstof, zijn gemaakt door kernfusie van waterstof en helium in het inwendige van sterren (‘wij zijn allemaal sterrenstof’). Hoe worden water en complexe prebiotische verbindingen gemaakt uit deze elementen? Dankzij

De term ‘klassiek’ (voorbeeldig) heeft zich in het bijzonder aan de Grieks-Romeinse beschaving gehecht. exchanges of territory as the end result of violent military campaigns, we peacefully exchange culture, services and goods. It is precisely this variable (once again economics), which leads us to reflect on the disintegration of the eurozone and perhaps the EU. To some extent we can even take the view that we exchanged the territorial expansion of nations for economic expansion. It might make sense to continue with European integration, but stop considering it just as an econo-mic exercise. Perhaps it is time to think in terms other than economic expansion and growth. Economics has its limits and we need to grow and move on to some-thing else. Is this naive? Two generations ago, it was naive to think that Europe would leave behind our obsession with geographic expansion, so why should we not give up the idea of endless economic expansion?

Tomáš Sedláček (1977) is a Chief Macroeconomic Strategist at ČSOB, one of the largest Czech banks. He is a member of the ‘Narrative of Europe’ group, com-missioned by Manuel Barroso, which aims to give artists, intellectuals and scientists a platform for discussing and expressing ideas about Europe. Sedláček worked as an economic advisor to President Václav Havel. The Yale Economic Review (2006) ranked him one of ‘five hot minds in eco-nomics’. He was a member of the National Economic Council, an advisory body to the prime minister and government, from its establishment in 2009 until 2013.

His book Economics of Good and Evil became an international bestseller, which received positive reviews from both the academic and popular press (Financial Times, New York Times and Handelsblatt). It was on Der Spiegel’s bestseller list for weeks and was awarded the Deutscher Wirtschaftsbuchpreis in 2012.

Facebook, Twitter, Google, research labs, educational institutes, government institutions, healthcare and journalism: technological developments mean that data is stored everywhere. All this data can give us new insights, helping us to analyse the world around us and find solutions to seemingly insoluble problems. The question is: who is looking for what and how? How can we extract insights and useful information from the mountains of data? What pitfalls can we expect when interpreting results?

What fields of applications are available for data mining? Who decides what happens with the information? And what about privacy?

In 2009 President Obama called nuclear terrorism one of the greatest threats to international security. On March 24 and 25 the Netherlands will host the world’s third Nuclear Security Summit (NSS). Some 60 government leaders (including Obama) and representatives from international organizations will come to The Hague to discuss measures for improving global nuclear security and preventing nuclear terrorism. Tonight Anita Nilsson, one of the participants of the summit, will give us an update of the results and their impact. How can we establish effective, sustainable nuclear security systems that would significantly reduce and eliminate the threat of nuclear terrorism? How can we ensure that nuclear material is never accessed, and above all else, never stolen by terrorists for their malicious purpose, and at the same time ensure continued contribution to development?

As head of the IAEA Office of Nuclear Security, Ms. Nilsson was responsible for coordinating and implementing the IAEA´s Nuclear Security Plan to prevent, detect and respond to acts of nuclear terrorism and threats thereof.

Turkish foreign policy has experienced turbulence and a dramatic shift after the Arab Spring. When the AKP government came to power in 2002, Turkey pursued a ‘Zero Problem Policy’ with the neigh-bouring countries, until the start of the Syrian crisis. In the past decade, Turkey’s regional and global policy aims developed as an emerging power. The country’s ‘shift’ from the West in foreign policy has been also debated in recent years. But as the developments show, Turkey remains in the ‘Western ship’ and has no intention of changing its classical ‘European orientation’. In tonight’s lecture, Bağcı will talk about Turkish foreign and security policy, and show whether and why this policy will remain deeply Western in general, and European in particular.

In art, a landscape is not just a landscape. Be it a painting, a photo or a video, a landscape is not merely a depiction but a space for imagination. Like no other genre, it mirrors people’s thoughts and dreams. In other words, the history of landscapes is also a history of consciousness.

In this series, Ko van Dun follows the path of the artworks at the exhibition Weltsichten in the Bonnefantenmuseum. At the same time, the art of landscapes will serve as a framework for some general considerations regarding the development of Western art and culture as a whole: from Giotto to Cézanne and from Turner to Becher.

Currency expert Bernard Lietaer states that the fundamental problem with our present-day monetary system is that it is not sufficiently diverse. But we actually have the capacity to create a very different reality by enabling our energies to move more freely where they

are most needed, including towards cleaning up our environment, building adequate housing and providing good quality healthcare, etc. Tonight, Lietaer shows that we need an upgrade of our monetary systems as a systemic solution to our global economic, financial and sustainability crisis. We need the circulation of different types of currencies for different types of purposes.

200 years ago, after a period of French occupation, the Netherlands became an independent state. This fact is being celebrated with various events throughout the Netherlands from November 2013 to November 2014. Maastricht is hosting a programme about the international orien-

tation of the Netherlands in the world and Europe, and this lecture series is part of that programme. We will be addressing the history of international relations, and current and future policies. On the one hand, we will look at the Dutch spirit of commerce, and on the other at moral issues that affect the Dutch when they cross the border. Do the salesman and the vicar go hand in hand or do their morals disappear when they smell money?

Psychology is the science of mind and behaviour. We all go through life thinking, feeling and acting. It feels as though we are in control of this, and to a reasonable extent we are. But in reality, many factors that drive our thinking and our behaviour are often beyond our awareness. Why am I depressed in winter? Why did I fall in love with her, but not her? And why does nearly everybody fall in love with Brad Pitt? Psychology can provide some of the answers. What is intelligence? What is personality? What is memory? Why do we dream? Why are we prone to all kinds of illusions every day? Why are other people even more prone to illusions: for instance hearing voices or seeing things? And lastly, is our sense of control an illusion, and do we have free will? In this lecture series, De Graaf will introduce key concepts and findings from the science of psychology that may help us understand ourselves just a little bit better. The fourth lecture will be delivered by Henry Otgaar, PhD Forensic Psychology UM.

In een klein dorp aan het einde van België delen de Vlaamse Bob en de Waalse Marcel met verve eenzaamheid, humor en drankzucht. Zelfmoord is volgens hen de beste oplossing als het echt niet meer gaat. Dan maken ze er samen een eind aan en ze weten ook al waar: onder de levensboom van Bob. Bob is een vrijbuiter op rust, die zijn laatste dagen in stilte wil doorbrengen terwijl Marcel een gezin heeft dat hij niet wil verliezen. In direct cinema stijl zien we een Waals carnaval, een autoaccident en zijn we getuige van een mislukte poging om de zoon van Bob te vinden. Zelfs de beruchte levensboom van Bob blijkt te zijn gekapt. Maar zelfmedelijden is aan deze twee Belgen niet besteed. Samen staan ze sterk, tot Marcel besluit om te stoppen met drinken en Bob weigert hem te vergezellen naar de afkickkliniek.

Filmed between August 2011 and August 2013, this is a portrait of a group of young revolutionaries in Homs in Syria. They dream of their country being free from Assad and fight for justice through peace-ful demonstrations. As the army acts ever more brutally and their city is transfor-med into a ghost town, the young men become armed insurgents. The protago-nists are two friends: Basset, the 19-year-old goalkeeper of the national soccer team and the 24-year-old media activist Ossama. The close-up camerawork takes the viewer right into the group. Scenes of lively protest parties make way for panic-king civilians on the run, followed by grim battles in a deserted city.

Het Pieter Baan Centrum is een huis van bewaring met als bijzondere opdracht het onderzoeken van personen die wor-den verdacht van een ernstig misdrijf. In zeven weken tijd wordt gekeken naar de persoonlijkheid van de verdachte, het eventueel aanwezig zijn van een stoor-nis en/of een psychische ziekte en de relatie met het delict. Bestaat er kans op herhaling? Moet er een tbs-maatregel worden geadviseerd? In deze film worden de verdachte, Tony, en zijn onderzoekers gevolgd tijdens de observatie. Er ontstaat een gedetailleerd beeld over de jeugd van Tony, zijn volwassen leven en de delicten waarvan hij verdacht wordt.

You don’t need an education in ancient Greek or Latin or an evening course in modern Greek to enjoy the expressive vocals and the emotional layers in the songs performed by the relatively young group ‘KOMPANÍA’. Just as fado is connected with Portugal, so rebétika as a form of music is closely intertwined with the bluesy Greek music that spread two centuries ago from Piraeus harbour, mainly through the circuit of café’s frequented by refugees. The five-piece group KOMPANÍA enjoys playing this originally underground music. We are proud to present this group: a new generation of top-level musicians keeping rebétika music alive. Though they are an ‘all-star’ group, more importantly they are a real ‘band’, with lots of dedication, and stunning solo and harmony vocals (3 great voices), specialising in rebétika and smyrneïka, as well as dimóthika (traditional Greek folk songs).

The core of The Havana Lounge is made up of big stars who have previously performed with the Buena Vista Social Club and/or Afro Cuban All Stars, and they are supplemented by young talented musicians who have dedicated their lives to traditional music.Visitors to ‘Live from Buena Vista – The Havana Lounge’ will experience traditional Cuban music in the way in which it is intended: live and acoustic. Söndörgő, led by the Eredics brothers, is one of the most active and interesting world music groups in Hungary. They play a style of music that is hugely attractive, but little known and quite different to the traditional, fiddle-led Hungarian repertoire. Their aim is to foster and preserve Southern Slavic traditions of the Serbs and Croats as found in various settlements in Hungary. In contrast to most groups playing Balkan music, Söndörgő does not play brass band music, but is a tamburitza band. The tambura is a small and agile plucked

instrument similar to the mandolin, which is sometimes supplemented by wind instruments and accordion. The three Eredics brothers and their cousin come from a village on the Danube near Budapest called Szentendre. It is a centre of South Slav traditions in Hungary, which lends a distinctive flavour to the plucked tambura music. Their new album ‘Tamburising - Lost Music of the Balkans’ features virtuoso dance melodies from the gypsy maestro József Kovács, leader of the Mohács tambura orchestra in the south of the country, and great vocals from Antal Kovács and Kátya Tompos. Join them in discovering the delicate beauty and effervescent power of a different Balkan sound.

In Buiten Schot doet Diederik van Vleuten waar hij goed in is. Hij vertelt een avond lang een verhaal dat zo ongelooflijk is, dat het wel waargebeurd moet zijn. Een doos vol kinderbrieven, een slagveldvakantie met oom Jan, een aanslag in Sarajevo, een pianoconcert voor de linkerhand, een kerstbestand, een watersnood, een Duitse keizer voor de deur. In Buiten Schot koppelt Diederik de kleine geschiedenis van zijn familie aan de grote geschiedenis van Nederland en de wereld. Oom Jan hoorde als kind in Noord Brabant het gebulder van de kanonnen van het westfront in Vlaanderen.“ Ik ken de Eerste Wereldoorlog van geluid” schreef hij. Bijna een eeuw na dato laat Diederik dat gebulder opnieuw horen en brengt hij die onvoorstelbare jaren 1914-1918 naar het theater. Op zijn eigen manier. Een verhaal, een piano, een paar foto’s en een simpel decor.
