    Acting Captain Hoos Message

On October 12th, at approximately 10:55pm, CaptainLazar left the Central District where he helped bringan end to a life-threatening situation where a manhad positioned himself high atop a building andrefused to come down. This incident lasted the betterpart of the day and into evening until San FranciscoFire personnel were able to harness the man andlower him to safety.

Captain Lazar was in an unmarked vehicle and drivingwest on Broadway from Fillmore. He was traveling atlow speed when something sent him and his vehicleinto a violent turn. Captain Lazars vehicle wasthrust violently forward as it made a complete360-degree turn. After Captain Lazars vehicle madeits turn, it struck the front of a parked vehicle that was on the far side of theopposing lane. The vehicle that struck Captain Lazar came to rest immediately nextto Captain Lazars vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle appeared to beintoxicated and could not exit from the drivers side of his vehicle. Air bagsdeployed and the only sound that anyone could hear was the sound of CaptainLazars horn that was stuck and steady. Captain Lazar was able to get himself outof the vehicle and contact 911 for assistance.

San Francisco Fire personnel transported Captain Lazar to San Francisco GeneralHospital where he was evaluated and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Thedriver of the vehicle that struck Captain Lazars vehicle was arrested for suspicion ofdriving under the influence.

Captain Lazar is at home resting and, as you may have guessed, he is calling meregularly. I will be the Acting Captain while Captain Lazar is away. We all wishhim a speedy and complete recovery.

    _______________________________________________________________________________

I see this as an opportunity to discuss the dangers of drunk driving. There are somany alternatives to driving while intoxicated in this city. Taxi, designated driver, walking, public transportation, etc. Too many people die each year due to collisionscaused by drivers who are under the influence. Please help by discussing thisimportant issue with friends and family. Also know that the San Francisco PoliceDepartment takes this issue seriously. The Department organizes sobrietycheckpoints in various zones throughout the city on a regular basis.
