Drawing Skills Students will meet in the visual arts room to learn shading and drawing techniques using graphite and charcoal. This camp is for beginners as well as more advanced art students.

Art ExplorationStudents will meet in the visual arts room to create and learn about art. Students will work with texture, patt ern, paint and more, and at the end of the week, will have two works of art to take home. All supplies are included.

Beginning Guitar/UkuleleThis camp is aimed at students who wish to get started playing guitar/ukulele. Students will focus on learning proper technique, musical elements, chords and reading tablature. Music will consist of songs students know from groups such as the Beatles, Maroon 5, Guns N Roses, Ed Sheeran, Imagine Dragons, Katy Perry, and many more. Introduction to Jazz BandStudents who play the fl ute, alto sax, tenor sax, bari sax, trombone, baritone, trumpet, guitar, bass guitar, piano, and mallet percussion drum set will play in a jazz ensemble sett ing and will work on performing a wide variety of jazz music (Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and some modern music). Students will use their individual skills with a group and make progress in rhythm, melody, balance, improvisation and other musical elements, and should be comfortable on their instruments. DrumlinePercussionists will work together in an ensemble sett ing. Students will focus on playing several diff erent cadences and techniques that are applicable to a drumline. Students will have the opportunity to play snare drum, bass

Culinary CampThis year’s camp will focus on French cuisine. Campers will learn about French culinary highlights, make French-inspired food & drinks, and then participate in fi eld trips to restaurants in the area which relate to the theme. Book to MovieThis camp is for students who enjoy reading a book and then watching the story played out in fi lm. Students will be given copies of four books which have been made into movies. Each participant should read the book before watching the movie. A short discussion of the book will be followed by watching the movie. Then a discussion will follow the movie. Refreshments will be served. Among the books/movies to be enjoyed are “The Secret Life of Bees," “The Fault in Our Stars,” “Wonder,” and a title to be selected by the campers.

Fun With GrammarIn this camp, students will have the opportunity to prepare for Freshman English at St. Francis High School by reviewing the parts of speech, noun functions, and diagramming. Writing the College Application EssayStudents feeling stressed about college applications will learn about factors to consider when choosing a college, as well as those for which college admissions counselors are looking from applicants. Students will examine the process for college application essay writing and learn what makes a good essay. In this camp, students will read sample essays, brainstorm essay ideas, participate in peer editing and receive instructor feedback.

Yearbook Theme DevelopmentDuring this two-day camp, students will develop the verbal and visual theme of the 2018-2019 Yearbook, including color scheme, fonts, visual theme extensions and concepts, and will prepare students to “hit the ground running” on the fi rst day of class. New yearbook students will learn the program used to create the yearbook. Students should bring lunch to camp. PREREQUISITE: Students must be enrolled in Yearbook for the 2018-2019 school year.

MythBusters –Quest for Truth!Inspired by the popular TV show "Myth Busters," St. Francis High School science instructors will challenge students to fi nd the truth and debunk scientifi c myths as they use the scientifi c method. Students are encouraged to be fearless, ask questions, design experiments, and investigate misconceptions and myths about science. In a fun and creative environment, this camp will help prepare students for exploring the scientifi c method as utilized in their high school science courses. All supplies are included.

CheerleadingThis camp is open to both girls and boys interested in cheerleading (no experience is necessary). Junior cheerleaders will learn the basics of proper motion technique, jumps, stunting technique, and tumbling skills. They will be taught two to three sideline chants, a short dance, and a fl oor cheer that they can bring back to their own teams for use during their cheer seasons. Athletes should bring water and wear cheer shoes or gym shoes, as well as comfortable clothing for physical activity.

Girls LacrosseThis camp combines skills development and scrimmage play, as age-specifi c techniques are taught to help players learn and refi ne their skills. Each session is designed to teach and perfect the basic stick skills of the game. Players will quickly gain confi dence in catching, throwing, dodging, ground ball pickups, and shooting. All participants must have certifi ed girls’ mouth guards. A limited number of lacrosse sticks and goggles are available as loaners.

Swimming TechniqueIn this camp, swimmers will focus on nutrition, goal-sett ing, mental toughness and building technical stroke skills, beginning with fundamental balance and positioning, and then progressing to advanced skills to optimize effi ciency. Swimmers will work through all strokes and learn foundational dryland exercises. Swimmers will be fi lmed daily and receive their footage, as well as writt en feedback from coaches. This camp meets at the Wheaton Sport Center Pool and is geared toward both newer and experienced swimmers. Swimmers should bring a front mount snorkel.

Summer Musical Stage CrewThis camp is for students wanting to participate in stage crew for the summer musical. Students will learn the basics of theatrical stage crew: set design, building, painting, and decoration; lighting; sound design; prop design; and costuming. Students will also be part of the summer musical running crew, which coordinates backstage work during tech rehearsals and each performance. Students should bring a lunch on days when camp begins in the morning.
