Pre-licensure BSN Program Overview

The pre-licensure Bachelor of Science nursing major at SF State is a two year program which prepares students for entry level positions in professional nursing practice in a variety of settings.

Graduates work as staff nurses

in maternity, pediatrics, medical-surgical nursing, gerontology, psychiatric/mental health, and public/community health nursing.

San Francisco State University Transfer Admission Requirements

Prospective transfer students must have completed at least 60 transferable semester units (or 90 quarter units).

SF State does not accept lower division transfers students. Strongly recommended that all Lower Division GEs be

completed prior to transfer. A minimum grade of “C” (2.0 GPA) is required for admission to SF State*. Speak with your community college Transfer Center or SF

State Student Outreach Services for guidance. The four basic subjects must have been taken.

*Second baccalaureate applicants are not considered transfers. They’re not required to complete GEs but must have a minimum Overall or Last 60 Units GPA of 3.0 at the time of application.

San Francisco State University Transfer Admission Requirements

Four Basic Subjects Area A1 - Oral Communication: A course in public speaking,

interpersonal communication, group discussion or small group discussion.

Area A2 - Written Communication: A Freshman English composition course.

Area A3 – Critical Thinking: A course in logic or argumentation or debate. (2nd year English Comp course preferable)

Area B4 – Quantitative Reasoning: Nursing applicants must take a statistics course which has intermediate algebra as a prerequisite.

School of Nursing Minimum BSN Admission Requirements

Must be eligible for SF State Undergraduate Admission or be a current SF State student. California Resident or eligible for CSU in-state

tuition. Minimum Prerequisite GPA 3.0 Score 78 or higher on the TEAS within 3

attempts. Current SF State students must have fewer than

96 earned units at the time of application. Complete 8 prerequisites

Survey of Chemistry w/ lab (4 units) An integrated course which includes topics in general, organic, and biochemistry is preferred. However general, inorganic, or organic chemistry w/ lab courses are also acceptable.

School of Nursing BSN Prerequisites

A grade of C or higher must be earned in all prerequisite courses. (C- is not acceptable.)

7 of the 8 prerequisites must be completed by the

time of supplemental application submission. Visit Assist (www.assist.org) to identify the

appropriate course at your school.

Additional Course Recommendations

While not required for admission, the following courses are recommended. They will benefit enrolled SF State nursing students and count toward fulfilment of behavioral or social sciences units needed for the NCLEX-RN. General Psychology

School of Nursing TEAS Requirement Applicants must score 78 or higher on the TEAS within 3 attempts total; regardless of version or application cycle.

Fall 2017 applicants must have taken the new version, ATI TEAS.

TEAS results must be submitted at the time of supplemental application.

The new version, ATI TEAS, will have a greater focus on anatomy & physiology and less emphasis on earth science.

School of Nursing Optional Supplemental Criteria

The Admissions Committee will consider the following supplemental criteria. Health-related work or volunteer experience

Multicultural work or volunteer experience

Multi-linguistic fluency within health-related or multicultural experiences.

U.S. veteran or military status

Applicants who have any of these experiences must submit a document or letter of verification on formal organizational stationery.

The Nursing Admissions Committee will conduct interviews with top candidates. Much like employment interviews, applicants

should be prepared to address questions in a clear and concise manner.

How and When to Apply Two-part application process for transfers and second baccalaureate applicants. Part 1: CSU MENTOR Submit a CSU Mentor application to the nursing major at SF State www.csumentor.edu Fall 2017 Entry: October 1 – November 30th

Spring 2018 Entry: August 1 – 31st (tentative)

o Assure proper program selection. o Transfer applicants must select:

“Nursing (NON-RN PROGRAM) [BS Impacted]” o Second Baccalaureate applicants must select:

Pacific Time Spring 2018* Entry: August 1 – 31st (tentative) *The spring application period is short. Applicants should begin gathering

application materials (letters of verification, TEAS results, etc.) in June to be prepared for application submission beginning in August (tentative).

What is NursingCAS?

AACN is the national membership organization for over 780 nursing

schools; providing public support for professional nursing education,

research, and practice. NursingCAS is available to schools through

AACN.

Liaison International provides the software, processing, and support to applicants and participating schools

NursingCAS partners with participating schools to provide an online application to students who

wish to apply to that school’s programs and processes

applications on their behalf

Creating an account is free. Applicants are charged when they submit an application to a program.

Undergraduate level, $45 for the 1st program submission; $30 for each additional program submission

Graduate level, $65 for the 1st program submission; $35 for each additional program.
