Editors Notes

Well it’s finally here - as promised in our issue 11, SF Magazine is launching its first annual “Collections” issue. This once a year event will offer talented Sims 3 CC creators the opportunity to showcase their work in an exclusive SF Magazine issue.

SF Magazine - The Collection Issue was created to support the common goal of invigorating the Sims 3 design scene by assembling teams of artists and fashion designers in a creative, community-based project, the culmination of which is a highly stylized, special edition of our magazine.

This Edition features works from some of the Sims 3 design communities TOP Designers including: Judie from All About Style, Hasel from TSR, Icia Designs and much much more! This Special Edition Issue also features some of the communitie’s most talented photographers, who all graciously agreed to participate in this project with us. To ALL of you - designers and collaborators, we send the most HEARTFELT of thanks as this would not have happened without you.

Also a GREAT big thanks to my dedicated staffers who managed to make this happen - yet again- in what seems to always be the most interesting of circumstances. I hope you all know how much I appreciate all your work in this endeavour and your patience. So without further ado...The Collections Issue!

Hugs, Madi xxoo

Do you have any tips for aspiring creators?

Be consistent , lots of practice and research. Try to read and learn by yourself, On the Internet you can find whatever you need to create. Just believe in your skills and your creativity.

9

Page 10: SF MAGAZINE Vol 1, Issue 11

What would you like to see more of from the Sims community?

Let people show their talents and don’t be so cruel with new creators.

Constructive criticism is more helpful, cruelty is unnecessary.

All About Style

Collection by JudiePhotography by AsiaShaMecca

http://www.all-about-style.com/

Who is All About Style?

All About Style is a 100% free Sims 2 and Sims3 custom content site owned and

operate by Judie. Excerpts here are from her full interview in SF Magazine; Issue 4.How: TSR Workshop and for meshes;

Rhino 3D, Wings 3D and Milkshape.

Why Please tell us a bit about yourself?

I have been retired for a few years now. I live in PA with my sister and two Pekingese.

When not Simming, I am probably traveling in our motor home.

Page 14: SF MAGAZINE Vol 1, Issue 11

14

What are the most challenging things about creating for the Sims?

Meshes are not shared as much as in Sims2. Therefore I must create my own meshes for everything that I do create. My meshing skills are adequate but not very

advanced. I would have difficulty making all of the meshes that would be required for historical content... In addition making them colorable with only 3 color channels is a real challenge. I keep thinking that I might get into “retro” though as Sims3 is set in a

retro time period sort of and current fashion trends are very retro.

Page 16: SF MAGAZINE Vol 1, Issue 11

16

Page 17: SF MAGAZINE Vol 1, Issue 11

Do you accept requests?

I don’t really accept requests but I do like ideas for projects from people. Sometimes others come up with some great ideas for me especially if they send photos... I mostly find my inspirations from fashion magazines and fashion websites. I also love the runway shows and I love to periodically do some runway fashions. People either seem to love them or hate them although I would think that every Sim community could use at least one Fashionista.

We got to hand it to our couture CC designers, they have us asking the ultimate question: Who’ll run the world? And giving the right answer too... Girls! We’re upping the stakes, taking couture to a deserted Sim-frican nation and giving our girls free reign

to pose and play. Our lead Justice is F-I-E-R-C-E! From her cut-away & sequined confections by Zamouk to her glittering black & gold Sims2fanbg mini-dress, she proves that Sims can give their all in couture’s finest.

How would you define your style?

My style is jeans & t-shirts in my real life and I loved to create clothes unique in my style for Sims. I choose the clothes in this direction but the downloaders most effect on my choice. They want to download extraordinary clothes in their game.

Page 32: SF MAGAZINE Vol 1, Issue 11

What advice do you have for aspiring Sims fashion creators?

I am not top of the Sims designer I have to learn lots of things but my advice is ‘don’t be rush, create slowly.

48

What motivated you to begin creating for The Sims?

I honestly have no idea. I must have been bored. I truly enjoy making

things, and positive feedback is a great motivator for sharing. For Sims 2, I

create things I need for Deception Pass. For Sims 3, I create things I feel are

missing from my game.

Do you have any tips for aspiring creators?

First and foremost, create what you like; don’t ever create just because you think other people will like something,

because you’ll get burnt out before you even really get started. If you like what

you make, it ultimately doesn’t matter if anyone else downloads it or not.

MODEL CREATOR SPOTLIGHT

To show all the hot new Collections we needed some fresh Sim faces. Miss Lochness and EvaTer were kind enough to

answer the call. Since we featured Miss Lochness last issue, it seemed only right to showcase the terrifically talented

EvaTer in this one. Presenting her glorious all original and unreleased Sim glamazons in their un-tweaked glory!

52

EvaTer

ASM: Please tell us a bit about you?EVA: First I would like to thank you for featuring me in your wonderful magazine, I feel so honored ! And a special thanks to my sweet friend and “sim buddy” Miss Lochness, getting me involved in all this. Thanks my dear !!

OK, my name is Eva Terlouw and I’m from the Netherlands. My sim creators name EvaTer is obviously based on my real name but also inspired by “Avatar” the movie. In RL I’m working as a Finance Manager, a number cruncher so to speak. I love the Sims 3 and spend a lot of my free time creating simmehs, mostly female. I’m hosting my own Sims 3 blog, I’m a Featured Artist and Moderator on the Cstyles Forum and most of my recent simmehs are also published on TSR.

ASM: How would you describe your personal style?EVA: Hmm... my personal style... I think most people would call it a glamorous looking style. You even introduced my simmehs as glamazons. I receive a lot of comments and compliments, my simmehs being glamorous, so who am I to argue with that ?? Ha ha !! I usually don’t start out making my simmehs look glamorous at all, but somehow most simmehs turnout with a bit of (how shall I put it ?) “class” or “stylish looks”, high heeled simmehs, LOL.

I did put this to the test a while back and I really had problems, creating a “plain looking” or “girl next door” simmeh. I think it took me three different Sim creations to finally get the feedback I succeeded in creating a “plain looking” simmeh. So glamorous it is ! Hehehe.

55

ASM: What inspires you to create these lovely Simmehs?EVA: It may sounds real stupid or egocentric, but I started out creating simmehs for myself, because I liked dressing up simmehs. It took me a couple of months before I started sharing sims, to the sims 3 exchange at first. After about half a year (start of 2009) I decided to host my own blog. At some point I decided the leave the Sims 3 exchange and focus completely on hosting my blog. In search of new friends and inspiration, I met the wonderful talented and amazing Miss Lochness and we have become “real” friends and later I bumped into Cstyles which became sort of a online home for me. Besides meeting Miss L, I met simmers like CeCe, Evie, Q~Girl and Jaedub to name just a few, they really have inspired me to go on and creating simmehs the way I do and love. They’re also inspiring me to look at and learn from their own unique creations and trying to make my sims look more realistic, all the time.

ASM: I LOVE your Sim making tutorials at CStyles. Do you have any advice for aspiring Sim creators?EVA: Thanks for your lovely compliment on my tutorials *blushing*. I love making tutorials (from time to time), so other less experienced simmers can benefit from my “know how” and things become a bit more easy for them. Simmers say they like my way of explaining things, so that’s certainly an inspiration to do more tutorials, or when simmers ask me to.

Some advice for sim creators? I would say take the time, to enjoy and create a simmeh! Taking the time to create a simmeh really pays of in the end, especially when you share them with

other simmers. Fellow simmers do notice and appreciate the time and effort you invest in creating a simmeh. I never make a sim in less than four hours and most of the times it takes me double that (or even more than that !). That sounds maybe a bit “scary” but see what it brought me ! I’m in SF Magazine !! Yayy !!

ASM: What would you like to see more of in the future from the Sims? And what would you like to see more of in the Sims community as a whole?EVA: I would love to see more “fairy tale stuff” like elves, orcs, dwarves and so on, basically all the LOTR stuff (yep I’m a fan !). Also I would love to see werewolves, zombies and super heroes like X-Men. Besides that I’m looking forward to the new EP “Pets” !! Love pets !!

In the Sims community, I see sometimes simmers getting hurt, or simmers hurting each other. I don’t like this in RL, I certainly don’t like that in a community which is based on a “happy game” such as The Sims 3 is meant to be. So I would say (mutual) respect for other simmers and for their creations. In addition I would like to see patches by EA who really solve things, instead of starting new problems !!

I’m kind of in the habit of relating “Real Life” to The Sims. Today I noticed something earth-shaking. Call it an epiphany. Despite what you may think, other than the occasional really nifty flight jacket no one in the real life military wears leather. Military guys should wear more leather!

Why don’t they? It’s durable... highly fashionable... and just all around bad-a** looking. Why don’t we want our military guys to look as bad-a** as possible?!?! I mean... I avoid fighting a guy in leather whenever I possibly can.

Here again is a clear win for Sims vs. Real life. In real life, sadly, leather just isn’t always practical. Even in fashion the Biker/Rocker trend gets the leather. The Military trend features boring old canvas and khaki (with the occasional patch or badge) just like... the real life Military. Umm... BORING! Your Sims, on the other hand, can leather it up to their hearts content. Let them. As you see here, it looks fantastic and as a bonus your Sims will never overheat!

48

How would you describe your personal style?

Well I would describe my own style as a mix between rock, vintage and smart. (Yes I’m talking about fashion!) I like simple clothes, but in fine materials. My favorite outfit for everyday is a white T-shirt, a pair of fit black jeans, a pair of laced boots, and eventually a leather jacket. I’m very turned on the Hedi Slimane style, I’m a great fan of what he did with Dior Homme a couples of years ago, that’s definitely my style.

What do you use to create your custom content?

I’m currently using Photoshop CS5, TSR Workshop and now that I’ve find a way to mesh I use Milkshape 3D.

What motivates you to create for the Sims?

What motivates me in creating CC is in a way, to approach the world of fashion, to bring to the users, those “piece of dream” those luxurious clothes that they may couldn’t be able to wear. To bring to them some joy and happiness. I take this opportunity to thank everyone for their great support!

taken from the full interview in SF Magazine: Issue 3.

About the designer:

I live in Turkey. The first thing I do when I sit at my computer is listen to music or watch

a movie. These are the basics while I am designing. I also enjoy drawing pictures and

taking photos.

What inspires you when you create?

I started creating for the Sims 2 about 5 years ago. I can get inspiration from everywhere; a

movie that I am interested in at the moment, a dress I saw on a friend - from everything!

68

What tools do you use?

I like TSR Workshop a lot more than its predecessor Bodyshop for Sims 2... I would like to see more meshes for EA and I would like for

the meshing task to be a bit easier.

Page 69: SF MAGAZINE Vol 1, Issue 11

69

What do you prefer doing as far designing?

I prefer doing everything for the Sims. I still play the game, so I like creating according to what I’m feeling at the moment. In the future I would love

to design homes and items for the houses.”

I like suits. I know some guys who curl up in their private places at the thought of a suit. As if its less than guy-like or confining or... constraining or some such. They lack vision. Honestly... I question their guy-ness. Far from constraining, a suit is a true opportunity for self expression. A suit can be suave... debonair. Throw on the right tie... oh! and maybe a hat, and it can give you just the right amount of gangster. I mean, how can you NOT have swag in the right suit? It has versatility to spare.

My friends, I am here to testify... A suit can set you free! It announces your presence with authority! You don’t have to say a word.. you’re wearing a suit for chrissakes! And best of all *whispers* in case you hadn’t noticed... chicks dig suits. Even Sim chicks!

Cycle2Here is a little known fact (maybe): judging a contest is HARD. It’s tough to give people honest critique without being hurtful or mean. Its tough to keep the challenges fresh, be on time and when necessary eliminate people you have really grown to like. In the end, you want to bring out the best. Sure its “just a contest”, but when someone is giving it their all and posting their pics every week... it matters.

Cycle 2 started with a galloping heard of talent. Talent was practically bursting at the seams. We had to turn folks away (by the way we hate that too) but by the end it was so worth it!

The purpose of SNTFP is to choose a new staffer for SF Magazine. Our final three were all so good we KEPT ‘EM ALL *insert greedy laugh here*. Please join us in welcoming our newest staff photographers: aikea-guinea, Sylentwhisper and Dustydreamer. We’re beyond thrilled to have them join the family. The final challenge was a full Look Book for an assigned Sims CC designer. They were too amazing not to share. We hope you enjoy them and these Cycle 2 highlights.

About the Designer.

Ummm...about me? I’m a 25 year old female with 2 pet chickens named Monk

(girl) and Scully (boy). I enjoyed playing the Sims 2, never played the Sims 1, and love playing the Sims 3. I just started making

stuff for Sims 3 so they may not be perfect but I’m hoping to get better. I really hope

you enjoy my creations! That’s all.

How would you describe the style of your creations?

My style is aimed at children. Fun-wear for kids. Especially stuff they can wear just

everyday.

What do you use to create your custom content?

Photoshop and TSR workshop.

Why do you take the time to make CC?

I like doing it. It’s fun for me and it doesn’t seem like a chore so I do it. Thanks so much you guys I’m glad you like my stuff. I’m still not perfect but I think I’m getting better. I may not have time to reply to every comment but I do read them and I love hearing what you think about my creations. Well, I’m not much for words just wanted to say thanks... so thanks :)

Beauty

D SBright shadows.... Natural makeup... Colorful liners... Bold lips... Beauty trends are like the ocean. If you look back you’re lost. Trends will come and go in a blur of powder and paint. But some looks are eternal.

Seriously, what happens when you just don’t feel bright and colorful? When you want to stand out but not glow in the dark? What do you put on your face when you just feel like bringing the drama?

Smokey eyes of course. Dark dramatic smokey eyes are to makeup what Chanel is to fashion. A timeless classic. This icon of beauty looks will never fail your Sim. Throw in a splash of color. Her eyes will grab the attention and no one will forget her face.

Dare to go dark. From the street to the dance floor and on the after-party. For everywhere in between. When you’ve tried the rest come back to the classics.

About the designer:

I’m from China. My Chinese name is Su Shan. So my English name is Susan. But my Chinese name Su is family’s name. I am 22 years old, and....I’m a Graphic Designer.

How would your style?

I like the simple style. Too many fancy things will distract people, which is something negative for the creation.

Do you have any other sites besides your artist page at TSR?

This is my Blog. Here I will have some free creations.^-^ http://blog.sina.com.cn/susanissa

Words by Minraed Images by Lylim

SF Magazine has seen some successful times of late – in celebration of these accomplishments and to meet the needs of the growing social demands that the staff and clients are engaged in, SF went all out to contract one of the city’s hottest new designers, Lylim of Triple Take Studios, to construct this jewel of a rooftop patio. This patio exemplifies urban elegance in the signature contemporary style that complements the fashionable attitude that is SF. The magically elegant ambiance is complete with its full service bar, miniature rock gardens, and refreshing shallow relaxation pools overlooking the cityscape below. H

While every corner is touched by the warmth of natural lighting, pergolas and flowing sheer drapery provide shelter from the elements. Insanely comfortable banquette seating is arranged to create cozy alcoves, which by night are lit by the intimate glow of candlelight and contained fire features.A combination of natural woods of various tones and textures marries perfectly with the stylish décor to create a designers dream patio. This hot new designer Lylim is sure to be finding herself in high demand once this showcase of outdoor homescaping is flaunted to the fashion world.

The ultimate fashion accessory

Page 100: SF MAGAZINE Vol 1, Issue 11

Who among us doesn’t fantasize of their own personal boutique closet – an inspired space that is far more than a collection of rods and hooks to hang your clothes? We dream of the ultimate repository of style where highly-functional clutter control is married with harmonious design elements in a sophisticated and luxurious sanctuary.
