Sewing Club

Sewing club has been running several times a week at lunchtime.

At present the students are creating their own giraffes. Students

have learnt how to lay out a pattern cut out correctly and transfer

appropriate markings from the pattern to their material. Their

giraffes are starting to take shape and we look forward to

showing them at an assembly very soon.

From the Principal

Virtues Project

As you are aware we are beginning to implement the Virtues Program. We will be focusing on defining the

virtues and developing children’s understanding of what they mean. Our aim will be to acknowledge children

when they demonstrate these virtues, thereby encouraging them to use them more and also to guide and correct

children who need to practise the virtues by using a common language.

This week we have had a visit from an expert presenter from Tasmania Sandra Rowden-Rich. She is working

with us helping us to implement the Virtues Program. This coming weekend 6 of us will have in-depth training.

It is a 2 day program so a big commitment on behalf of the staff involved. This should be of great benefit,

moving forward as we introduce the program throughout the school.

Curriculum Days 2016

For your information I am letting you know the Curriculum Days for 2016

They are as following:

Wednesday 27 Jan

Friday Feb 19

Friday April 29

Friday July 29

Please save these dates somewhere safe as they will assist you in future planning.

Spelling

Last week we had a Spelling professional development with our consultant, Lyn Watts. As you would be aware

we have been using a program called DIPL for many years. Whist it has been successful and children have

gained an excellent understanding of phonics and spelling rules, it is time to move on and expand children’s

knowledge.

We have decided to change to a strategy based program whilst still using the DIPL resources. The new strategy

based program will teach spelling in 4 different categories

Phonological- if you record all the sounds the word will appear correct eg n-u-m-b-e-r.

Visual- you will need to know what the word looks like as no other strategy will help you (you often need a

memory trick to help you) eg-who

Morphemic-you will need to know a specific rule eg i before e except after c

Etymological- this strategy focuses on where the words come from (Latin, Greek words) –eg octogon,

octopus (oct=8)

DIPL very much focused on phonics and morphemes and it is now time to add the other 2 strategies to expand

and consolidate understandings.

Lunchtime clubs

You may or may not be aware but we often have clubs at lunch time. These are optional activities that are

available on certain days and different ones are available at different times of the year. Currently we have a

sewing group with Janelle Wadsworth (AP) and a Drawing club operates once a week with Lyn Francis.

Our annual Chirnside’s Got Talent will be held this term and auditions are held at lunch time. I encourage all

interested children to start practising in readiness for the auditions. The senior children organise this event and it

is entirely up to the children to enter and then prepare an item for the audition. A panel of judges (teachers)

select the finalists and then the final is held with the school community as spectators. More details to follow.

Physical Education

Division and Regional Athletics

Over the past few weeks a number of students have competed at Division and Regional level for

athletics. Congratulations to Briar.K (800m & 1500m) and Sierra.F (long jump) on their fantastic wins at

Division Athletics and also to Lachlan.O (1500m) and Zac.C (800m) for coming second in their events and

qualifying to compete at Regional Athletics. The school is very proud of their efforts at both competitions.

Student Achievements

We have many sporting stars at our school. A few who you may not be aware of, as their sports aren't part of the

interschool curriculum are Dane.K, Alisha.L and Rachael.L. Dane regularly competes at a high level for roller

hockey (like ice hockey but with skates) and he has advised me that early next year he will be competing at

Nationals, representing Victoria. Congratulations Dane... Awesome effort! Alisha and Rachael have recently

been competing all over Victoria for Calisthenics. They have another competition this coming Friday and we

wish them all the best in their endeavours. Also Josh Dunlop competed in the National Motor Cross Finals in

Perth. He came 15th which is a fantastic effort.

Sharing More Lollies On Monday, Sam, Sunny and Sylvia shared some lollies that their mother had given them. Sunny got half as many lollies as Sam got. Sylvia got a third as many lollies as Sam got. Their mother gave them the same number of lollies each day up to (and including) Friday. 1. If Sunny got 9 lollies on Wednesday, how many lollies did Sylvia get on Thursday? 2. Is the number of lollies that Sylvia got over Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, less than the number Sunny got for the days Thursday and Friday? 3. How many days does it take for the number of lollies Sunny got, to be greater than the number Sam got on Friday? 3-6

The Painting Triplets Dave, Sarah and Brian are triplets. Dave, can paint the TV room by himself in 3 hours. His sister, Sarah can do it in 4 hours. Their brother Brian would take 6 hours on his own. If they all work together and don’t get in each other’s way, how long will the job take?

Before and After School Care

Newsletter - October Term 4 has begun with a warm start – reminding us that we must remember our hats and slap on

our sunscreen – our policy at Camp Australia is “No Hat – No Play” – so please, please, please

bring your hat with you each day.

Well done and great big thank-you to Chloe and Casey for running a very successful Holiday

Club. The children had great fun with all the activities, incursion and excursions offered. Look

forward to seeing everyone back for our Summer Holiday Club which will be run over January.

A Great Huge Thank-You for your generous donations to our fundraising during the last week of

Term 3 for the Smith Family Back 2 School project when the children participated each day in

“Minute-To-Win-It” – all together we raised an amazing $50.00.

This term we will focus on recycling and being aware of using our resources wisely – looking at

ways that we can contribute to saving our environment. Last term we visited “Reverse Art” and

will look at creating activities using recycled products and waste from other sources.

If anyone has newspapers and magazines for recycling we would love to take them off your

hands if you are happy to bring them in – Leakhena has come up with an idea for the end of term

Christmas Tree that will be made using newspaper and magazines – Many thanks

This week we are making origami creations – Dogs, rabbits, snowflakes, dragons, snakes – we

would love you to come in and see our display.
