SEW SPECIAL ‘17
Featuring Judy Kissinger Saturday, October 14 at United Presbyterian Church, Peoria
Judy Kessinger started her career owning and operating a small retail fabric store in
Louisville, Kentucky. She traveled nationwide holding seminars for Hancock Fabrics for over
25 years.
She designed costumes for national and international figure skaters and created a fast
and easy way to conquer fitting problems for that field.
Judy’s next goal was to make stress-free sewing with simple solutions for fitting. Her
personal style included many relaxed, comfortable, well fitting outfits.
In her search for the “perfect” pattern, she decided to use her experience and create
the system herself. The Master Tops and Master Pants patterns were born! Once you FIT the
basic pattern, you can build and create an entire wardrobe on those two patterns.
Judy is known by many as the Fit Doctor, curing the ills of the sewing “blues”. Sewing is the easy part, but it’s the FITTING
that makes garments come alive and compliment the body instead of just covering it!
Her web site, www.fitnicesystem.com has allowed her to expand into more teaching tools for her “sewing sisters” with
videos and online classes. Judy has been blessed to have touched the lives of countless women. She has taught them the tricks of
looking trim and feeling fantastic by simply fitting themselves properly.

hours of charitable sewing you may have done since January.
Any sewing skills you have contributed for the benefit of the community can and should be reported to
Martha Gamble, Neighborhood Group Coordinator in June. Please either provide the information to your
neighborhood group leader so she can send it to Martha or just email Martha yourself howell-

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Many of you know that I am a bit of a gym
bum. My house would undoubtedly be
cleaner if I wasn't at the gym or hoofing it
down the blacktop. With the help of a
couple of workout friends. I keep putting
in sweat time for the health of it.
What does this have to do with
sewing? I'm sure you know I am going to
tell you if you keep reading. Did you know that sewing is
good for our physical health and mental well being? Maybe
the best part is that expensive workout shoes, clothes and
sweating is entirely optional! Fantastic news for sure.
Sewing has been shown to lower blood pressure and
slow the pulse. I admit there are times when I am not sure this
is always the case, but science has been able to measure these
positive benefits and the benefits of lowering blood pressure
has been known for years. How great is this when someone in
your family tries to interrupt your sewing project? All you
have to do is remind the interrupter you are working on
lowering your blood pressure. The look you get will be
priceless.
Sewing has also been shown to relieve depression
and anxiety. In today's crazy world, this is also great news.
Mental health experts have actually recorded measurable
improvements in relieving depression and anxiety in women
who attend and participate in sewing groups. The reasons
could be a sense of accomplishment, spending time with self,
developing a hobby, socializing with others, encouraging
others or receiving encouragement from others. These
attributes describe ASG perfectly, aka neighborhood groups.
Another health benefit is that sewing may delay or
even help prevent mental decline as we age. This perk should
be enough for all of us to sew every day with vigor and
creative passion. Again, the experts aren't quite sure why this
is so, but who cares if sewing gives our brain rest by focusing
mindfully on one task at hand, stimulates the brain with
learning, creativity, problem solving, on and on? Sewing is
just plain fun.
Whether mending a garment, sewing on a button,
hemming a pair of pants or creating a sewing masterpiece, be
mindful of the unseen health benefits taking place. Since the
fountain of youth is as close as the next guild function, be sure
to share this marvelous health supplement with others. Invite
that friend along to the next NG meeting or sewing seminar. I
encourage all of you to fire up that sewing machine, serger or
thread that needle, and sew for the health of it!
Don’t forget the button challenge at Sew Special ’17!

A WORD FROM YOUR COMMUNITY LIAISON Our first charity sew of 2017 on Friday April 7th, was a big success! We made 100 bibs! Our sewing
benefited Crittenton Crisis Nursery. Eleven women traced, sewed, trimmed, turned, pressed and topstitched the
bibs donating 29 hours to this worthy cause. We kept busy, stopped for a quick lunch and went back to our jobs.
Thank you to everyone for your time, energy and bringing a fun attitude.
Our next charity sew is Friday, September 8 at the North Branch of the Peoria Library off of Allen
Road. We will be working on anti-ouch pouches. See you there!
The summer retreat is at Villa Maria in Springfield from August 21-23. The registration form is on page 4 of this newsletter.
See you soon!
Lynne LaHood, Community Liaison
WHAT TO DO WHEN SEWING FRUSTRATES? So in the interest of full disclosure, I must share with you fellow members that I have had a bad
couple of months. I know many of you have shared about wadders over the years. They are those projects that
end up “wadded” up and thrown in the trash.
I have generally finished projects, even when I am unhappy with them. I have always figured that
someone might use the garment or at the very least, it was a good learning opportunity. However, in the last
few months, I have not had a significant success in several projects in a row. For me, I put all the fabric and
sewing machines away and closed the door for a break.
In the midst of this, though, I have continued to attend neighborhood meetings. What I am finding is
that seeing the fantastic items folks have made, learning about new, interesting techniques, and hearing about the challenges and
frustrations from others is slowly but surely drawing me toward a desire to pull my fabric back out.
I may have avoided disappointment by not sewing, but I have also certainly missed the joy of accomplishment and the
delight of creativity. I am thinking what project I should pursue next. I would be eager to hear how some of you have waded through
these “wadders,” and come out ready to move forward again.

FROM THE BOOKSTORE
Designing Clothes with the Flat Pattern Method, Sara Alm
Sara Alm guides you through customizing your clothes by desiging new pattern shapes, style lines and
fashion details with easy-to-follow instructions.
The author uses basic pattern blocks—slopers. She show us how to create patterns for nearly any piece
of clothing we want to sew.
You can change the hemline of a basic skirt from a straight skirt to an A-line or a full swing with
multiple gores. Waistbands can be converted to a waistline facing. The style and placement of closures can also
be changed. There are endless options given.
The book is divided into sections: skirts, tops and pants. Many principles apply to each garment type.
There are also different techniques to take into account in each garment.
Once we know how to design a sloper for a skirt, top or pants, we can transfer that knowledge to designing dresses, shorts,
jumpsuits and outerwear.
The principles and techniques can also be transferred to children’s wear.
There are twelve different garments designed from each basic sloper. Photographs are included so we can fully understand
the process as well as the end result.

The Perfect Fit: The Classic Guide to altering Patterns, Editors of Creative Publishing
We all know that good fit improves the comfort and appearance of any garment. That is why many of us
sew our own clothes. We also worry about ruining a pattern when we cut it apart to make a fitting adjustment. This
book makes pattern alterations easy with methods illustrated step-by-step.
The books includes analyzing a figure, measuring the body, customizing the pattern and fine-tuning the fit
with small adjustment such as moving buttons or reshaping darts.
It shows how to change a commercial pattern which is sized for millions of women into a sewing blueprint
sized to fit each individual figure.
There are 400 step-by-step photographs in this book.

techniques and tips to make the most of your serger or overlock machine. Sergers are versatile and speedy
tools for stitching garments and home décor projects.
You will learn how the serger works and about the many styles available. It explains the variety of
functional and decorative stitches possible.
There are easy-to-find and easy-to-follow charts. The book explains thread choices, must-have
accessories and the best stitches for a range of fabric types.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS
NOTE: Be sure to report any charitable sewing you have done to your neighborhood group leader or to Martha Gamble directly
or to the neighborhood group leader.
ANTI-OUCH POUCH Anti-Ouch Pouches (AOPs) were designed by our chapter member Deon Maas. This underarm hanging pillow
is intended to add a little comfort to people’s lives during a stressful, painful time. The pillow hangs from the shoulder,
fitting snugly under the arm to cushion and ease the pressure of the underarm and breast area after breast surgery, upper
body surgeries or during radiation treatment.
Tens of thousands of anti-ouch pouches have been lovingly sewn and donated to breast centers across the United
States. The American Sewing Guild featured the Anti-Ouch Pouch as the 2008 National Community Service Project.
Read more at www.asg.org/?s=Anti+Ouch+Pouch.
This will continue to be an ongoing project for our chapter. We take them to the OSF Susan G Komen Center, Methodist
Diagnostic Center in Peoria and OSF in Galesburg. The digital mammography is catching so many more cases that our need has
increased. We would appreciate help making AOPs. Follow this link www.asg.org/files/community_service/Anti_Ouch_Pouch.pdf for
the pattern. If you have questions, contact Deon Maas at [email protected] or Sue Barnabee, [email protected].
Please consider donating soft fabric, stuffing or completed AOPs. We donate hundreds every few months in our area at OSF
Komen Center and Methodist Diagnostic Center.
ANGEL GOWNS OF CENTRAL ILLINOIS Loss of an infant leaves a sorrowful emptiness in the arms and hearts of their families who never
were able to bring the child home from the hospital. It can be an isolating time, especially as parents
try to find clothing in which to bury their tiny babies.
The Chillicothe Christian Church is coordinating the project to make Angel Dresses from
wedding and formal gowns. The Angel Dresses are for babies who never recover in the neonatal
intensive care unit at Children’s Hospital of Illinois at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
The gowns are made for baby boys and girls to serve as baptismal/end of life gowns. Navy, gray
and black are used for pant sets for the boys. The gowns are made to fit the small premature babies. One
wedding dress can make up to 10-12 Angel Gowns. Each little outfit comes packed in a special, pretty keepsake box. In the box,
along with the gown, is a handmade blanket and hat and booties.
Over 100 wedding dresses have been donated since the project began. There is a need for pink, blue or black gowns. They
currently have a supply of wedding dresses. They also need ribbons, lace, buttons, thread and other notions, cash donations or JoAnn
Fabric gift cards to purchase sewing supplies. Dresses do not need to be cleaned before you send them. Unless your gown has been
trashed, sewers have had lots of luck spot cleaning and working around damage.
ASG members can contact Dorothy Burnett at (309) 647-1956 or Sue Barnabee, [email protected] (309) 647-0111 to make
donations or for more information.
CRITTENTON CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER
Crittenton Development Center serves Central Illinois children and families by providing loving
child care and a 24-hour staffed crisis nursery.
The center is in constant need of crib sheets. You can donate them directly, contact a CAB member for pick up or bring them
to a chapter/neighborhood meeting. The pattern is on the web site. www.peoriaasg.org/CommunityServiceCrittenton.html
Our chapter donates custom-made bibs, crib and cot sheets, burp pads and wash cloths to help defray the costs of purchasing
these items. Those patterns are on the web site link above. Crittenton staff members have said the items our chapter provides are
"much higher quality" than those they can purchase. Please consider helping. Supplies to make the items will be provided for you.
This year we will help support Crittenton Development Center by collecting coupons for baby items. Since these are time
limited, gather your coupons periodically and mail them to Crittenton Development Center, 442 W John H Gwynn Jr Ave, Peoria, IL
61605.
Our support at Crittenton Child Development Center is done by donating items that they need. This is a project we will be
continuing. Contact Lynne LaHood for information at [email protected].

MEET CHAMPAIGN/URBANA NEIGHBORHOOD CO-CHAIR
SHARON GERTH My interest in sewing began when I was about 12 years old. None of the women in my family were
sewers. However, my mother always included her daughters when visiting her lady friends, many who did
sew, knit, and/or crochet.
Before tackling the required apron and skirt in my middle school home economics class, those ladies
helped me make a crop top and a gathered skirt.
In high school my sister and I would sew for ourselves using the money we earned babysitting to
purchase patterns, fabric, etc. One particular favorite of mine was a shift made from a cotton fabric with a
strawberry design over a white background. I even figured out how to apply a ruffle around the hem.
Due to the fact we didn’t receive new clothes very often, the garments I made for myself were worn
and treasured. Limited funds and a desire to have a personal say in the design spurred my sister and I to sew
the wedding dresses and bridesmaids dresses for our own weddings. I remember my mother’s old Singer
sewing machine had a shuttle instead of a bobbin and it was a challenge to keep it threaded and to keep the
thread from breaking. In the years that followed, time permitting, I made many of my nursing uniforms and lab coats.
When I came to Champaign-Urbana in the 1970’s I discovered The Treadle in a little house in Fisher where the end run bolts
of knit fabric were available for purchase at a good price. From the variety of knits acquired, I made clothes for my mother as well.
About that time the Stretch and Sew Fabric Shop opened in Champaign. I enrolled, completed all the classes and made nearly all the
garments in the book that accompanied the course. My large collection of Stretch and Sew patterns includes several of my favorites
that I still use today. Unfortunately after a few years Stretch and Sew closed. Somewhere along the way I took some classes at the
Singer Sewing Center in the Country Fair Shopping Center but they too closed. When they were selling out, I was given the
opportunity to purchase a machine in a nice cabinet that I used for years after.
Until we eliminated our family gift exchanges at Christmas, I made garments for each of my five sisters, my brother, and my
nieces and nephews. My husband prefers to buy his own clothes, but I have sewn a wool vest, some shirts, and nightshirts for him in
addition to repairing items to prolong the wear. When he recognizes that I am wearing a garment I made, he will frequently say how
nice I look and his favorite line is “When you make something, you make it to last.”
Although I vowed I would never make a quilt, my sewing took off in that direction. After several memory quilts, log cabin
designs, and other patterns, my interest waned. Since my retirement, garment construction has taken on an increased focused. One
day while in JoAnn Fabrics looking for bargains, I picked up a flyer for the Champaign-Urbana Neighborhood group of ASG. Once I
joined, my attendance was regular until schedule conflicts arose in my work with the Friends of the Urbana Free Library. When the
neighborhood group was reorganizing to focus on garment construction, I wanted to see that happen and a change in the meeting day
and time for the neighborhood group resolved the conflict. Beside garment construction, I found that others in the group are interested
in fitting issues too. We have some very talented and knowledgeable ladies in our neighborhood group. I expect to learn a lot in the
days to come while I continue to refresh and update my knowledge base and hone my skills related to the art and craft of sewing.
This year I am serving as co-chair of the Champaign/Urbana Neighborhood Group.

SEWING TIPS FROM SUE
Happy “scrapping”! If you haven’t seen them, one of the latest trends to use up scraps or “bits” is the mug
rug. It’s a fabric coaster used to set your coffee (or other beverage) on to protect your furniture. Here are some
ideas: https://www.etsy.com/search?q=mug+rug, https://www.pinterest.com/auntpittypat2/quilted-mug-rugs/?lp=true
and http://tipnut.com/mug-rugs.
So, what do you do with your fabric scraps? You could make flowers, phone pouches, pin cushions,
pillows, yo yo’s, cup cozies, key fabs, book marks, gift or luggage tags and the list goes on and on. Here are ideas
for you to explore on line: http://crazylittleprojects.com/2013/03/25-things-to-do-with-fabric-scraps.html ,

check http://thesewingloftblog.com/100-scrap-fabric-projects/ . This is just a beginning!
Are they organized or in a pile, sack or box? They can be organized by color, size, or just randomly. They can be stored in
clear shoe boxes, bins, glass jars, baskets, or bags. They can be cut so they are all one size for future use—think jellyrolls, etc. They
can be cut in same size strips for strip quilting. Small “bits” can be saved for appliqué.
Or, you can just throw them out!

SEW-CIETY NEWS is the quarterly newsletter of the Central IL/Peoria Chapter of the
American Sewing Guild (ASG) located in Peoria, Illinois. The American Sewing Guild is a non-profit

SEPTEMBER is the month to celebrate sewing and it’s right around the corner. In 1982, President
Ronald Reagan declared September as National Sewing Month “in recognition of the importance of home sewing to our Nation.” We
need to work on making that an international celebration, too.
