The Washington Ireland Program (WIP) is looking for host families to provide safe, supportive and welcoming homes for 4 brilliant students from Northern Ireland and Ireland. They will be in New York from Thursday 7th June - Thursday 26th July. We ask that host families live within easy access to public transport as the students will be commuting independently to their work placements in New York City on weekdays. This is a great opportunity to support up and coming young leaders, deepen cultural connections and make a contribution to the long term peace on the island of Ireland. Further information can be found on the WIP website or contacting Andrew McCullough directly at: (917.421.0364 // [email protected])

St. Vincent de Paul Society Today as we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension, we are reminded that Christ’s saving work on earth continues through his disciples…and now through us. When we give to the poor, God indeed pours His love, peace and joy into our hearts, into our lives and into the hearts of those who are poor. Today’s second collection will go directly to serving the poor in our community. Please email the Society of St. Vincent de Paul - [email protected] so that together we can help the suffering and poor.

St. Barnabas Church and the Ladies of Charity would like to thank all who came out and supported our Annual Baby Shower. All donations of clothes, formula, diapers and monetary donations were donated to The Sisters of Life who reside in Saint Paul’s Parish in Yonkers. The Sisters were so happy to get all this items as they have many babies to take care of.

May God Bless you all for your continued support!

Mary, Mother of Christ – Mother of the Church

After a brief hiatus due to vacation and pilgrimage, I am happy to resume my reflections and articles in our bulletin. Today is a most apropos day to reflect upon the Model of our Church – Our Blessed Mother. On this Mother’s Day we turn to her and give her (as well as our earthly mothers, grandmothers, aunts, godmothers, etc.) due and fitting thanks for their role within our lives. However the entire month of May is dedicated to Our Lady – some ask why? Shouldn’t she have more of a prominent place in our lives other than just 1-2 months in our year? The truth is she actually has an essential role in our lives! Here’s how: First, Mary is known as the Mother of Christ. It was at the moment of the Annunciation when the Angel Gabriel came to her and

told her that she was chosen by God (through her Immaculate Conception in the womb of her mother St. Anne) to be the Mother of God. (Luke 1: 26-38)

Mary gave birth to the Redeemer of the world and thus her role in our Church is inseparable from her union with Christ and His Bride – the Church (CCC 964). The union of the mother with the Son in the work of salvation is made manifest from the time of His conception to the Passion.

After Jesus’ Ascension, Mary aided the beginnings of the Church with her prayers. (Lumen Gentium, 69). We see her with the disciples as they receive the Holy Spirit in the upper room at Pentecost and by her prayers begging the Holy Spirit, which had overshadowed her in the Annunciation, to come onto these men whom her Son chose to be “witnesses to the ends of the earth.”

In her Assumption, she was taken up to reign with her Son in glory body and soul. Jesus crowned her Queen of heaven and earth and the Assumption is itself her singular participation in the resurrection of her Son and an anticipation of the second resurrection of all the faithful at the end of time (CCC 966).

By Mary’s complete acceptance and adherence to the will of the Father and to her Son’s work of redemption in the world she is the model of faith and charity for us, her followers, to imitate. The Motherhood of Mary to Our Lord is in turn her motherhood to each of us as her children. We are called through our daily lives to give due honor and love towards her who has loved our Redeemer. Through her intercession she is known as the Mediatrix (Mediator) of all graces – her function as the mother of the Church in no way diminishes her role as mother of Christ; it in turn complements and enhances it.

We in turn are called to honor her as our Mother, the same way in which we honor our mothers here on earth. As Venerable Fulton Sheen has so beautifully stated about Our Lady: “One look at her, and we know that a human who is not good can become better; one prayer to her, and we know that, because she is without sin, we can become less sinful.” (The World’s First Love, 23).

A Blessed Mother’s Day to Our Lady and to all Mothers in our Parish – may Our Lady continue to bless and protect you now and always! Fr. JP

Fr. Matthew Fernan, Pastor St. Eugene Church, Yonkers

SEAS Church Study on the Eucharist Called Presence SEAS - St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Shrub Oak

SEAS church is hosting a three week study called Presence produced by the Augustine Institute, and soon to be available on FORMED. Although the Eucharist appears to be simple bread and wine, it is actually the “source and summit” of the Christian life. Presence: The Mystery of the Eucharist explores the truth and beauty of Christ’s real presence in the Eucharist, from its origins in Sacred Scripture to its profound role in the life of the Church and its members. The Eucharist is the crescendo of the entire story of salvation. The study will be in Our Lady Memorial Chapel, and begin on Thursday, May 17th, and continue on subsequent Thursdays, May 24th, and 31st. Sessions are each 1 ½ hours long, and participants may attend either the morning session at 10am or evening session at 7:30pm. This study is sure to move hearts and inspire meaningful discussions about God’s active involvement and presence in our lives. For more information contact Charles Angelillo at [email protected] or 914-245-9248.

The Catholic Widows and Widowers of Yonkers is a social, religious and bereavement organization which helps to meet the needs of its membership.
