Seventh Sunday after the Epiphany

God of love, through Your Son You have commanded us to love one another. By the guidance of Your Word and Spirit, deliver us from impenitence and teach us the truth that we might confess our sins, receive Your forgiveness, and be reconciled to one another; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

For reconciliation Lutheran Service Book

The failure to reconcile is the refusal to forgive. The one who does not have the higher righteousness, the righteousness of reconciliation, which forgives, will absolutely never enter the kingdom (5:20) and the one who refuses to be reconciled will remain in prison until he pays the last penny. The pericope in the Sermon of requiring reconciliation and then failing to seek it makes no mention of how the indebtedness was acquired. The Sermon’s saying is filled out and further explained not only by the Lord’s Prayer but by the parable of the unforgiving steward. The concept of debt owed and debt paid reaches its culmination in the words of Jesus that he came to serve by offering his life as a ransom for many (20:28), i.e., the community. Refusing to forgive another member of the community becomes more onerous, since the community has its origin in the redemption of Jesus whose death remains its constitutive authority.

Leviticus 19:1-2, 9-18

A The Old Testament Reading for the Seventh Sunday after the Epiphany is from Leviticus,

chapter 19.

1 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them, You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.

9 “When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, neither shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. 10 And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the LORD your God.

11 “You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; you shall not lie to one another. 12 You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the LORD.

13 “You shall not oppress your neighbor or rob him. The wages of a hired

worker shall not remain with you all night until the morning. 14 You shall not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind, but you shall fear your God: I am the LORD.

15 “You shall do no injustice in court. You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor. 16 You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not stand up against the life of your neighbor: I am the LORD.

17 “You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason frankly with your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him. 18 You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.”

A This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

1 Corinthians 3:10-23

A The Epistle is from 1 Corinthians, chapter 3.

10 According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. 11 For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— 13 each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. 14 If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.

16 Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple.

18 Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,” 20 and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” 21 So let no one boast in men. For all things are yours, 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours, 23 and you are Christ's, and Christ is God's.

A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

Matthew 5:38-48

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fifth chapter.

P [Jesus said:] 38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40 And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. 41 And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.42 Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and

hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Leviticus 19:2: “You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.” By God’s grace we are His children – and we are called to be spitting images of our Father who is in heaven. Growing in holiness is not some abstract concept – it is growing into the image of God: in love, in generosity, in kindness, in humility. Where Jesus goes, we follow. How Jesus is, thus are we called to be.

Holy Communion is joyfully received here today. At the altar, our Lord Jesus Christ delivers His true body and

blood into our mouths. His gift of body and blood, given in, with, and under the bread and wine, bestows

tremendous benefits. His body and blood forgives our sins, strengthens our faith, binds us to the Lord, and

unites us with each other. In this is life and salvation.

All members of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod have publicly confessed this sacred gift and its blessings,

and so are encouraged to commune. Other guests wishing to join our confession and receive this Holy

Sacrament are asked to meet with the pastor in the weeks before communing for the first time.

When you have examined yourself according to Christ’s bidding (1 Corinthians 11:28), come to His altar

rejoicing, just as Jesus asks, knowing that our Lord meets you here with joy.

Those coming to the altar for a blessing rather than Holy Communion are asked to cross their arms over their

chest.

Dear Savior, upon Thy gracious invitation I come to Thine altar. Let me find favor in Thine eyes that I may approach Thy table in true faith and receive the Sacrament to the salvation of my soul. Amen.

“Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” (Matthew 9:38)

Week 1: At Baptism, Jesus called us to be His disciples, His followers. As His disciples, we follow Him in praying earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. However, consider how Jesus, who asks for prayers for more laborers, also answered the call as He Himself labored in the harvest through His life, death, and resurrection. Perhaps as we follow Jesus’ direction to pray for other laborers, we may also be led to follow Jesus’ love, mercy, and compassion to also go out ourselves.

Take some time to read and then pray about the Lord’s call to make you into a fisher of men in Matthew 4:19.

Today – O gracious Father, just as Jesus’ food was to do Your will and accomplish what You had sent Him to do, so may following Your will also be our food and nourishment (John 4:34); in His name we pray. Amen.

Monday – O faithful Jesus, just as You only did what You saw Your Father doing, grant that we also may be those who only do what we see You doing (John 5:19); hear us for Your name’s sake. Amen.

Tuesday – O Jesus, Son of Man, just as You only spoke what You heard Your Father saying, make us also to say only what we hear You saying (John 8:28); in Your name we pray. Amen.

Wednesday – O Lord Jesus, just as You served us and gave us an example to follow, help us to discover the blessing of doing as You have done to us (John 13:15, 17); for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Thursday – O Holy Spirit, abide in us so that we may follow Jesus by denying ourselves and taking up our cross (Mark 8:34). Mercifully hear us, for we cannot do this on our own, but only by Your power; in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Friday – O King of all creation, give us hearts that seek first Your kingdom and your righteousness, that all would be added to us (Matthew 6:33); for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Saturday – O ascended Lord, You called Your disciples to follow You and then sent them out as Apostles, “sent ones,” to go and make disciples of all nations. Send us into Your harvest so that we also may multiply the laborers until all are gathered into Your kingdom’s bounty (Matthew 28:19-20); we ask this in Your name. Amen.

Restrooms are located down the hallway beyond the Narthex. Please see an usher if you need assistance.

Children are always welcome and encouraged to be in worship! For those who need it, however, we have an attended nursery located in the preschool area down the hallway to the right of the entrance beyond the Narthex. It is intended for children from birth to age 5. The nursery is also available during the Adult Bible Study hour.

A privacy station is prepared for all mothers with young children, including a rocking chair and changing table in the lounge of the women’s restroom downstairs. It is located down the narthex stairs, turning left past the fellowship hall and kitchen, and then another left and just after the men’s room.

Each Sunday your child may pick up a “busy bag” from the stand in the Narthex. Each busy bag has different books and activities for your child to keep them busy during the Divine Service when they are unable to focus. Please return the pouch and its contents to the stand in the Narthex at the end of the service. This way the pouches will be clean and ready for the next Sunday’s service.
