A Message from Father Pasley:

Dear Members of Mater Ecclesiae,

When we celebrated our annual Forty Hours Devotions last year, signup for and participation in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament was excellent. Three or more people were present for every hour of adoration. Many graces were obtained by such sincere and generous prayer. The parish is to be commended.

When it comes to attendance at the three Forty Hours Masses, Opening Mass on Friday, the Mass of Peace on Saturday, and the Closing Mass on Sunday, however, we need major improvement. The Church was only half full for the Opening Mass and the Saturday night anticipated Mass had many more people than usual. I realized during my prayer and adoration time that I was to blame. I asked people to sacrifice, and yet the regular Sunday schedule was intact as if the weekend were no different than any other. After a great deal of prayer and thought, having consulted with Father Hartman, I’ve decide to change the Forty Hours Schedule. The Forty Hours weekend must be treated in a very important and different way, because it is extremely important and different. All of us, priests and people, must make a unified sacrifice for the Lord, so that these days are celebrated to their utmost solemnity.

I ask you to once again sign up for Adoration for this year’s Forty Hours. The

NEW SCHEDULE will be as follows:

Friday, October 2 No 8:00AM Mass

Confessions 7:00 PM -7:25 PM 7:30PM – Opening Mass and procession of Forty Hours – sung High Mass

- All night Adoration Saturday, October 3 No 8:00AM Mass & No 5:00 PM Anticipated Mass Confessions – 9:30AM – 10:25AM 10:30AM – Mass of Peace – sung High Mass 6:00PM – Solemn Vespers of Holy Hour

- All night Adoration Sunday, October 4 7:00AM Low Mass No music or sermon (for those who are unable to attend

The Closing Mass) Confessions – 9:30 – 10:25AM 10:30AM – Closing High Mass and Procession

I cannot stress enough how important it is for us to restore Forty Hours to pride of place. We need the reparation and adoration more than ever. Sincerely, Father Pasley

EMBER DAYS

Days of Fasting and Penance

Ember Days are on the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday following the First Sunday in Lent and Pentecost Sunday, during the third full week of September, and after the Third Sunday of Advent.

They are days of fasting for the special sanctification of the four seasons and for obtaining God’s blessing on the clergy, for whose ordination the Ember Saturdays are specially set apart. The Propers of the Masses reflect the Season in which they occur and include additional Lessons said before the Gospel.

BALTIMORE CATECHISM LESSON FOURTEENTH: On Baptism

Q. 664. What questions should persons who bring a child for baptism be able to answer?

A. Persons who bring a child for baptism should be able to tell:

1. The exact place where the child lives; 2. The full name of its parents, and, in particular, the maiden name, or name before her marriage, of its mother; 3. The exact day of the month on which it was born; 4. Whether or not it has received private baptism, and 5. Whether its parents be Catholics. Sponsors must know also the chief truths of

our religion.

Q. 665. What is the obligation of a godfather and a godmother?

A. The obligation of a godfather and a godmother is to instruct the child in its religious duties, if the parents neglect to do so or die.

Q. 666. Can persons who are not Catholics be sponsors for Catholic children?

A. Persons who are not Catholics cannot be sponsors for Catholic children, because they cannot perform the duties of sponsors; for if they do not know and profess the Catholic religion themselves, how can they teach it to their godchildren? Moreover, they must answer the questions asked at baptism and declare that they believe in the Holy Catholic Church and in all it teaches; which would be a falsehood on their part.

I baptize thee in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
