A message from Revd Colin Randall who will belicensed as our new Priest in Charge at a servicein the benefice at 7.30pm on Thursday 20thNovember in Withington Church.

I am very pleased to have this opportunity to introducemyself to you. I have enjoyed meeting people from theparishes and looking around and amy very much lookingforward to coming and ministering among you.

I am married to Judith and we have three sons, Jonathan,Robbie and Steven. Jonathan lives and works as a videographer in Lancaster, Robbie is in London and isgetting married in October and in the autumn he will start work as a Primary Schoolteacher. Steven will have just started his final year at Aberystwyth University wherehe is studying European languages.

Judith lived most of her early life in Cumbria and her parents and two brothers livethere. She enjoyed her teacher training in Gloucester and has taught FoodTechnology, but she has also had other jobs including working as pre-School assistant, running her own cake business, working in the Chester Cheese shop and for Sendthe Light book distributors as a Graphic Designer. My family roots are inGloucestershire and my father and one brother live there. I trained as a teacher inCheltenham, and taught Maths for a couple of years in Gloucester and Croydon. However from my teenage years I had also had a strong sense of calling to ordinationand following training at Trinity College, Bristol have served in Carlisle, Oxford andChester Dioceses looking after a wide variety of different sized villages with anequally wide variety of styles of worship. I enjoy both traditional and contemporaryworship.

Judith and I both enjoy listening to music and are both fans of Gloucestershire folksinger, Johnny Coppin. Judith enjoys going to the theatre and art galleries, walking, badminton, cycling, gardening, photography, singing and playing the guitar. I enjoyreading both Christian and general and have enjoyed being part of a village bookgroup. I also enjoy TV and Film science fiction and fantasy (Dr Who, Star Wars, StarTrek, etc.). I am a big user of Apple technology and enjoy seeing its potential forministry. I also enjoy table tennis when I get the chance. My musical tastes are broadand include Genesis, Mark Knopfler, U2 and Thea Gilmore. We both enjoy pubquizzes and are also fans of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.

We hope that tells you a bit about us, and we look forward to getting to know you.

Colin

RIDE + STRIDE on SEPTEMBER 13thA DAY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR OUR CHURCHESThis event, run by the Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust, is a great way to support our ColnRiver Group churches and churches across the county when they most need help. So if you fancyjoining our team of cyclists on a short tour of some of the county’s beautiful churches, or taking partin any other sponsored activity to help your church, put Saturday 13 September in your diary now.You will be joining thousands of people countrywide raising money for an important cause. 2013was one of the best years so far for Ride and Stride in Gloucestershire, with 121 churches takingpart and raising around £47,500. The Coln River team of 18 cyclists, from age 16 to quite old, raised around £2,600 and secured the trophy for best group performance. The Dowdeswellparticipants raised almost £1,800 of this, getting the award for best church performance andnarrowly beating the church at Dymock where our former curate Tony Lomas is the vicar.Apart from the enjoyment of exploring a part of our beautiful Cotswolds and seeing inside somehistoric gems, many of which provide refreshments and a friendly welcome, there is the motivationthat 50% of the money raised (before Gift Aid) goes to the church of your choice. The other halfwill enable the Trust to continue to support churches of all denominations around the county. This year we plan to make a circular tour of about 13 miles to visit 10 churches, including those inFairford and Eastleach which are included in a book of England’s best churches. We will meet inFairford, where there is a free car park for those wishing to transport their bikes, although moreambitious cyclists may want to cycle there. If you would like to join us, or would like more details, please contact Bryan Taylor on 01242 820436.

Village News Village NewsWithington School have done it again!Anyone who went to watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in July will agree thatour small village school have, yet again, put on another brilliant end of yearperformanceOpening with an expressive narration from Penda, who then became a very charmingGrandpa Joe, the production moved swiftly through the story of Willie Wonka andhis Chocolate Factory. William took on the role of Willie Wonka with his usualprofessionalism and was easily in charge when he showed the children round hisfactory. Elliot looked perfect as Charlie Bucket and both William and Elliot sang theirsolos with confidence. Augustus, Violet, Veruca, Mike and their respective parentswere well cast and really enjoyed their roles. The comic timing was brilliant andKyle’s exit from the stage was not to be missed! The small children, lead by Darcy, Maria and Maisie were perfect Oompa-Loompas,remembering some complex words and songs, the audience really looked forward totheir appearance each time a child ‘disappeared’.The singing and musical accompaniment was, as always, a real pleasure to listen to,and the children carried off their solos perfectly. If we are looking for stars for thefuture, Livvy’s short solo verse was very confident and beautifully sung. The set and props were well thought out and very impressive, with plenty of specialeffects including flashing lights and projection. There were some difficult scenechanges, which were carried out really efficiently and really added to the audience’senjoyment. There was quite a team backstage and their role is as important as thoseon stage – so well done! The delicious refreshments in the interval certainly added to the whole evening’senjoyment – thank you Withington School we all look forward to the next show!Lindsey

SEVENHAMPTON AND DISTRICTW.I.Our WI has been busy over the past threemonths. The very word somehow causesamusement and our July talk anddemonstration were indeed entertaining. The speaker, Mr Robert Thatcher, was bothinformative and amusing and when heenlisted the help of the intrepid ‘volunteer’Lynne in creating and tying pork sausagesinto strings, there was much hilarity. Thephotographs should look good in our WIscrapbook. At our meeting on 1st September, Mrs SianDavies will give a talk on scarf tying, soexpect members at subsequent meetings tobe ultra chic! SHIPTON WEEKEND9th and 10th. AUGUST

Saturday 10.30am-5pm Sunday: 10am-4pm.Technically the event takes place in Shipton Oliffe’s Reading Room but all the road maps show it asShipton. For those members not familiar with Gloucestershire/Oxfordshire there are a number of

Shiptons so be warned. It is in fact just about 6 miles east of Cheltenham just off the A40 and close toAndoversford where you will find the local hostelry if you get fed up with enjoying the delights of Bassett-

Lowke trains.Shipton has earned the reputation of being a very friendly gathering with everybody having the

opportunity to run trains they bring along and being very easy on the pocket. There is no admission fee,all we ask for is donation to a charity, and last year’s being R.N.L.I.

Refreshments will be provided at very reasonable prices.Remember there are very few official Bassett- Lowke meetings this year so why not give Shipton a try

and enjoy the great fellowship.Andrew Hurley 01452 856726

Our small school does such a wonderful variety of sports.

There has been a buzz of activities for us this month, kicked off by the Kwik crickettournament and closely followed by our whole school sports day which was a resoundingsuccess. “At Sports Day we did a relay, obstacle course, water race and Javelin throws. I liked it” wrote Maisie Year 2“Sports day was so much fun. We were all in different teams like Oak and Ash and Sycamore. WW1 book by a local author“Letters from the Front The Retreat from Mons”Last year I found a bundle of letters in my atticfrom my Grandfather to his new wife. They record in pencil and quill pen the Retreatfrom Mons to Ypres in 1914. He was William Llewellen Palmer from Lackham, inWiltshire, a noted Old Harrovian and 10th Hussarwho was on active service throughout the firstwar. You can see the work of the censor onstrategic facts alongside touching poetry

“I am in a dangerous place and may be killed at anymoment. God knows, my love for you knows no equal.”

It includes his photographs and letters from histime as Liaison officer to Allied HQ at Ypres. Hegossips idly about the characters present atMessines: Generals French and Smith-Dorrien whowere both sacked after the battle, Chetwode, Haigand Howard-Vyse who were on the rise.He is moved to tears when his closest friend thenotable Cambridge and Harrow cricketer MajorEustace Crawley of the 12th Lancers was killed infront of him. One commentator wrote “Moreheartbreak than history”It is available on Amazon for £9.99 and in theGarage at Andoversford. Charlie Llewellen Palmer
