Seven Signs It’s Time to Upgrade Your POS Hardware

In challenging times, replacing point-of-service units is hardly appealing. For many retailers, it can seem like an unnecessary expenditure — especially if current units appear to be perfectly functional.

But be warned: Trying to save money by sticking with obsolete hardware can actually cost more in the long run — in more ways than one. Aging units lead to escalating risks, each potentially more expensive than the last. Worst of all, antiquated systems — unable to adapt to emerging trends — rob your business of tomorrow’s opportunities.

If your POS can’t deliver the following benefits, it’s time to consider investing in hardware.

Ask Yourself, “Can your POS…?

Millennials and Hospitality:

Deliver 24/7 Reliability

Reduce Energy Use

Risk of unit failure escalates with age. It’s simply an undeniable fact. That’s why retailers need to carefully consider all the ramifications of a till breaking. Imagine if one of your tills fails — especially at the peak of traffic or during a key promotional event? Consider the lost sales compounded by frustrating delays that risk customer loyalty and result in lost sales.

If cost control is a top priority, using aging hardware isn’t helping your cause. Older devices can produce exorbitant power bills for a host of reasons, including inefficient processors that generate excessive heat. By comparison, modern POS units “sip” electrical power, operating in an environmentally and economically sound fashion. As an aside, so-called “energy saving” sleep settings on obsolete units serve little purpose. Why? Many retailers have limited hours to serve the customer. Units placed in sleep mode take too long to “come back to life.”

Maximize Space and Mobilize Sales

Offer a Personalized Shopping Experience

With sleek, wifi-enabled designs, modern POS hardware can be placed virtually anywhere. They can be mounted to walls and freed from restrictive cables. Such benefits aren’t just aesthetic; they boost efficiency. For example, units can be placed closer to customers and the point of intent. Capture the sales before the consumer changes their mind. Many purchases are rationalized between the dressing room and the cash wrap. Though it may seem like a minor adjustment, but such a move yields larger market baskets, happier customers, and more efficient sales.

Modern POS units can do much more than ring transactions, they can serve as a platform for omnichannel growth, inventory visibility, and customer engagement. The empowered associate gains a 360º view of customer, inventory, and channel to complete the endless aisle to save the sale.

Improve Security of Business Information

Fortify the Role of the Store

Hardware and operating systems are intrinsically linked — the older the hardware, the older the OS running on it. When the OS nears end of support and your hardware can’t operate the next-generation OS, you’re faced with a major predicament, as unsupported operating systems become increasingly vulnerable to new viruses. Considering that security experts now say cyber-attacks and breaches are virtually inevitable, it’s more important than ever to upgrade your outdated technology.

Retailers are under a tremendous amount of pressure and becoming increasingly dependent on technology. The role of the store is under siege. How can a retailer improve individual store performance? Confirming that operating systems are secure and POS units are functioning properly are critical valuation prerequisites. Modernize your POS platform to empower associates with more transparency into customer, order and inventory to drive sales and improve satisfaction.

Rejuvenate Your Brand and Inspire Brand Advocates

Looks may not be everything, but the aesthetic appeal of modern POS units shouldn’t be discounted. With sleek, dynamic screens, they represent a vivid contrast compared with models that are even a few years old. To associates, an investment in hardware and modern software sends a clear message that the enterprise is investing in their future. Retain talent with the latest technology.
