Introduction | 3

The Epson® SpectroProofer® is an optional in-line color measuring system that can be installed on the Epson SureColor® P6000, P7000, P8000 and P9000 printers. When driven by the latest software RIP front-ends, the SpectroProofer can automate virtually any color management process in your workflow.

Follow the instructions in this guide to install the SpectroProofer on your printer. This guide also provides maintenance and troubleshooting information. Once you’ve set up the SpectroProofer, follow the instructions that came with your color measuring software to use the equipment.

Handling and product information

Be careful when handling the spectrophotometer, calibration tile, and backing plates. If they become scratched or soiled, your color measurements may be affected.

Note that the spectrophotometer and tile come as a numbered set; they have been calibrated to work together. If you purchase two or more products, be sure you use the same numbered pieces together.

Introduction

Note:

The ILS30EP-based SpectroProofer is backwards compatible with the Epson Stylus® Pro 7890, 7900, 9890, and 9900 printers. It is not supported on the Epson Stylus Pro 7700 and 9700.

Caution:

Do not touch the spectrophotometer lens; it can be easily scratched. Avoid touching the white surface of the tile and backing plates.

Aligning the SpectroProofer

The SpectroProofer must be aligned before you use it for the first time. You only need to perform this procedure once. You don’t need to repeat the alignment if you remove and re-install the SpectroProofer.

1. Confirm that the SpectroProofer is powered on by checking its green status light. The SpectroProofer must be powered on before you turn on the printer, or it won’t be recognized.

2. Turn on the printer.

3. Load 24-inch or 44-inch roll paper in your printer, depending on your model. Follow the paper loading instructions in your Setup Guide, Quick Reference Guide, or User’s Guide.

4. Select Option Setup, SpectroProofer, and SProofer Setting. Press the OK button on the printer’s control panel.

The printer automatically prints out and measures an adjustment pattern. This process takes about one minute to complete.

5. When the alignment is complete, confirm that the control panel displays the correct backing color and a successful calibration status. If not, repeat the installation steps to make sure that the spectrophotometer is correctly connected to its cables and properly seated flat in its holder.

Your SpectroProofer is now properly installed. See the manual that came with your RIP or color measuring software for instructions on using the SpectroProofer.

Note:

The SpectroProofer does not have a power switch. It is on when it is plugged in and receiving power.

The first time you turn on the printer with a new SpectroProofer attached, a “Device not Aligned” message will display on the printer’s LCD screen.

Note:

It is important that the media specified on the printer’s LCD screen matches the media installed in the printer before initiating the SpectroProofer device alignment. See the User’s Guide for recommended media and settings.

Recertification

The ISO Standards Committee recommends that all spectrophotometers be recertified each year. This recertification process is not covered under warranty or any maintenance agreement.

If maintained properly, your Epson SpectroProofer is expected to perform within specifications for the rated life of the product. The SpectroProofer’s life counter can be accessed by printing a status sheet from the printer’s control panel (see your User’s Guide for details).

For customers requiring annual ISO re-certification, Epson offers an “exchange for new” program in which Epson will advance ship a new spectrophotometer and calibration tile at the customer’s request. It is then the customer’s responsibility to return the used spectrophotometer and its associated calibration tile back to Epson.

This exchange program is offered at the customer’s expense and can be initiated by contacting Epson Customer Support at (562) 276-1305.

The call center agent technician will provide telephone diagnostics to determine whether your product needs repair. The technician will provide additional instructions about the program at the time this service is being set up. At its sole discretion, Epson may elect to exchange the unit, ship replacement components or dispatch for On-Site Response. For highlights of the programs, please see “On-Site Response” and “Product Exchange.” Exchange units and parts assume the remaining warranty period of the original device covered by this limited warranty. When service involves the exchange of a product or its parts, the items replaced become the property of Epson. The replacement unit and parts may be new or remanufactured to Epson standards. Please see below for highlights of the service program offered.

C. On-Site Response: If Epson determines that a warrantied hardware defect requires repair and you are within Epson’s on-site service territory, an Epson Authorized Servicer will be contacted to make the repair at your facility. Epson will usually dispatch repair parts and a technician to your location for the next business day if determination that repair is required occurs prior to 1:00 PM Pacific Time. If that determination is made after 1:00 PM Pacific Time, dispatch will usually be for the second business day. An adult must be available to accept the parts delivery and be present at all times while a technician is on-site. Epson’s shipment of service parts does not imply that replacement is required.

D. Product Exchange: Epson may, at its sole discretion, elect to replace a product or parts that for whatever reason are diagnosed as defective. Under these circumstances, Epson will replace the product with the same or a comparable product refurbished to the Epson standard of quality. (The replacement product will not include promotional materials, accessories, stands, documentation, manuals, software, or cables.) The customer must be able to receive, unpack, and install the replacement Product, and prepare the defective Product for return shipment by following the procedures described in the user manual or documentation provided by Epson.

The repacked defective Product will be picked up by a carrier designated by Epson. If the defective product is not returned within seven (7) business days of receipt of the replacement Product, the customer will be invoiced at the price of the replacement Product. If the unit is returned damaged because you have not properly packed or shipped it, you will be billed for the damage. It is your responsibility to unpack, re-install optional components, and set up the exchange Product at your location. Epson does not cover damage caused by improper installation.

H. Disputes, Arbitration, Governing Laws:

1. Both you and Epson agree that any controversy or claim arising out of or relating to Epson products or services or this agreement, shall be resolved by arbitration on an individual, non-class, non-representative basis, rather than in court. The arbitration shall be governed by the rules of JAMS that are in effect when the arbitration is filed, excluding any rules that permit arbitration on a class or representative basis and under the rules set forth in this agreement. The arbitrator, and not any federal, state, or local court or agency shall have the exclusive authority to resolve any dispute relating to the interpretation, applicability, enforceability, or formation, including but not limited to, any claim that all or any part is void or voidable. JAMS rules are, available at http://www.jamsadr.com or by calling 1-800-352-5267. Disputes shall be resolved by a single neutral arbitrator, and both parties shall have a reasonable opportunity to participate in the selection of the arbitrator. If you wish, you may appear at the arbitration by phone. The arbitrator is bound by the terms of this agreement.

2. Pre-Arbitration Steps and Notice. Before submitting a claim for arbitration, you agree to try, for sixty (60) days, to resolve any dispute informally by contacting us at [email protected]. Please include your name, address and contact information, the facts giving rise to the dispute, and the relief requested. You agree to act in good faith to resolve the dispute, but if you and Epson do not reach a resolution within the sixty (60) days, you may commence an arbitration.

3. Opt-out. You may elect to opt-out (exclude yourself) from the final, binding, individual arbitration procedure and waiver of class and representative proceedings specified in this agreement by sending a written letter to Epson America, Inc., ATTN: Legal Department, 3840 Kilroy Airport Way, Long Beach, CA 90806, within thirty (30) days of your purchase of the Epson products and/or services that specifies (i) your name, (ii) your mailing address, and (iii) your request to be excluded from the final, binding individual arbitration procedure and waiver of class and representative proceedings specified in this Section H. In the event that you opt-out consistent with the procedure set forth above, all other terms shall continue to apply, including the requirement to provide notice prior to litigation.

4. There is no judge or jury in arbitration and your grounds for appeal are limited, however, the arbitrator is empowered to grant relief and award you the same damages as a court could, including declaratory or injunctive relief. Judgment on the arbitration may be entered in any court having jurisdiction.

5. Notwithstanding the foregoing, you may bring an individual action in a small claims court of your state or municipality if the action is within that court’s jurisdiction and is pending only in that court.

6. Notwithstanding the foregoing, we also both agree that you or we may bring suit in court to enjoin infringement or other misuse of trademark, patent infringement, copyright, or trade secret.

The foregoing shall not apply to the prohibition against class or representative actions. This means that if Section (9) (below) is found to be unenforceable, the entire Section H (but only Section H) shall be null and void.

9. We each agree that any dispute resolution proceedings will be conducted only on an individual basis and not in a class, consolidated or representative action.

10.This Section H is governed by the Federal Arbitration Act.

I. Other Provisions:

1. Other Rights You May Have: This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Some jurisdictions do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, or allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitations or exclusions may not apply to you.

2. Warranties in Canada: In Canada, warranties include both warranties and conditions.

3. Governing Law: Except for any claims subject to arbitration pursuant to Section H, you and Epson agree that the law of the state where you reside shall govern.

4. Venue: Except for claims subject to arbitration pursuant to Section H, in the event of a dispute you and Epson both consent to the jurisdiction of your state of residence or, if none, then of the courts in Los Angeles County, California.
