● I can explain how search engines select results

Search engine’s index1. Search engines build up an index of the information on the world wide web. They do this using programs called web crawlers.

2. Web crawlers are programs which move across the world wide web by following links between web pages.

Search engine’s index3. They take a copy of the web pages they visit to build up a search engine’s index, which is stored on the search engine’s servers.

Search engine’s index4. Search engine’s use the index stored in their servers to respond to search queries.

Main task: Creating your index

● Working in pairs you have 10 mins to index as many of the pages as possible - the bigger your search engine’s index the better you’ll be able to respond to search queries!

● Follow the links to the different web pages and read through the content.

● Add the web page’s address against each keyword that appears on the web page.
