THE COLLABORATIONFinding time outside the daily activities of the Marfione Custom shop, Sean Marfione brought his idea for the Star Lord to life in April of 2015. This piece is the start of a new line of collaborations between Sean and Anthony that will add to the Marfione legacy Sean has been a part of for years.

THE MAKER I like the new and the old ways of the art! As a kid, my brother and I used to make knives and swords by flipping our bikes over and using the back wheel as a grinder. One of us would work the peddle and the other grind the back wheel forming a wooden ground blade. I’ve been interested in the trade my whole life; working for my parents has taught me invaluable knowledge of the art that just can’t be learned by a book. I’m very fortunate and lucky to have been born into this trade and to be mentored by my father; I couldn’t see myself being anywhere else. To me the art of knife-making is the truest form of expressing myself. I hope to bring knives to the industry that not only I like, but that others will enjoy and appreciate.

Growing up engulfed in the knife industry, combined with a passion for the craft and an aspiration to carry on a legacy as a second generation knife maker, Anthony Marfione, Jr. (TJ) developed Heretic Knives™.

In early 2015, TJ approached A.M. Sr with the idea of Heretic Knives™ hoping to produce some of his own designs and implement techniques developed over the years. Carrying over a work ethic instilled by his parents, Heretic was born on the philosophy that if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right, and to the best of one’s abilities.

TJ is driven to: - Challenge and improve his skills as a knife maker - Create a unique ‘flavor’ for each hand-finished knife by combining the right raw materials - Enjoy exploring his interests outside of the knife industry, which include fishing, hopefully from his own boat off the Florida coast.

As much as Heretic Knives™ is my own brand, it couldn’t exist without the teaching and knowledge received from my father, A.M. Sr., and the support and willingness of my mother, Susan to share her experiences. THE COLLABORATIONInitiated at ECCKS in March of 2015, Borka Blades and Marfione Custom Knives have teamed up to produce a unique line of fixed blades. THE MAKER My interest in the knives started when I was 6 years old and my grandfather gave me my very first knife. As a teenager in the Yugoslavian Army, my obsession with knives intensified when I saw a fellow soldier with the very nice high end knife. I also learned just how important it is to carry the proper knife for everyday use, prep or tactical situations. I eventually saved up enough money, which was hard to come by, and bought my own knife and I haven’t looked back since.

About 10 years ago, with $70 in my pocket and a lot of drive and perseverance, I moved to the United States, to make a better life for myself. I gradually started collecting knives on a regular basis. I enjoyed researching and learning about all aspects of knives.

Then, about three years ago, my life was abruptly changed, when my mother, who was still living in Serbia, suddenly passed away. Unable to return home at the time, I had to find something to do to help me cope with what happened. I completely immersed myself into the knives. I started going to shows, meeting people and getting involved in the Knife Community. It was about this time that I thought about getting into knife making. The more time I spent around this community, the more I knew I wanted to be a part of it.

For the last two years, I have been working part time on developing my knife making skills and starting up my own business. My decision to name the company Borka Blades, after my mother, is not taken lightly. I put a lot of hard work and pride into each piece I make, knowing it carries my mother’s name. I put dedication into my work, just as she did into hers. I value the quality of every knife that leaves my shop.

I look forward to taking myself and Borka Blades to the next level. Thank you to all the people who support me, without you, none of this would be possible.

COLLABORATION: THE CLOSERKNIFE HOUSE HARA: KOJI HARA

THE COLLABORATION:Anthony Marfione has teamed up with Koji Hara to deliver a knife that idealizes traditional Japanese design with an exquisitely refined modern twist. Development on this piece began in 2014 and moved into production for 2015.

THE MAKER:1949 Born in Imari-city, Saga-pref.1988 Knife House Hara was established, and knife production began in the workshop. 1994 Knife House Hara attended their first exhibition, the A.K.G Show in July. 1995 When the knife didn’t sell well during Koji’s second A.K.G Show, and he made the decision to make his own original knife, rather than a copy of an American-style knife.1996 This year brought about an eagerness to participate in the US market. The air-step was announced for the first time in July at the AKG Show.1998 Koji’s design was awarded the Most Innovative in ECCK Show, and won numerous awards in the knife industry for the rear air-step design.2000 The Bamboo design knife was announced in September at the Paris Show.2001 As the Bamboo design became more popular, Koji began to become more conscious of the traditional Japanese elements as he prepares to design his next knife.2009 The Maki-e design knife was announced in September at the Paris Show.2014 The design for the “CLOSER” was completed in August.

When few knives were sold at the 1995 AKG Show, we began to look around at the knives that other manufacturers made, looking for answers as to why ours didn’t sell. I saw a Japanese sword that Mr. Scott Slobodian made; I felt that it is a sword, but not a Japanese sword. This got me thinking that the American customers must feel the same way about my American “copy” knife. I had been making a knife that was not made, but only not made in Japan at that time. From this point forward, eager to participate in the US market, I began making knives unique to the US market.

When making knives, I aim for a mirror finish more beautiful than anyone else using knife steel Cowry-Y, and being conscious of expressing Japanese-style elements in my designs. I draw from each beauty that a MOP, BLP, and GLP has. - K. Hara

THE COLLABORATIONTogether with D.C. Munroe, Anthony Marfione has made some impeccable design updates to the Sigil that the makers revealed in April 2015. Staying in line with the original design philosophy to create the ideal EDC knife, the Sigil handle now houses a low-profile spring loaded pocket clip (patent pending) and boasts aesthetic elements favored by both makers.

THE MAKER A full-time bladesmith since 1997, D.C. Munroe’s award-winning work has been featured in numerous international publications. A lifelong fascination with tools and weaponry led him to create his first knife in 1984, and evolving the various aspects of the craft has driven him ever since. Using a multitude of techniques and disciplines, including forging his own damascus, goldsmithing, and traditional stock removal along with 3D design and machining, Deryk pursues an aesthetic ideal that combines ancient and classical elements with futuristic design and technologies. A native of Montana, he has spent much of his life exploring the wilderness of the Rocky Mountain West where he has been greatly inspired by extremes in both nature and imagination.

In 2001, Deryk and his wife Jana built their shop in beautiful Southwest Montana and began working together to create Munroe Knives. In 2012, their daughter Sage joined the team fresh out of art school and the endeavor became a fully family-operated business. When not working in the shop, Deryk enjoys various outdoor pursuits including overlanding, backpacking, and practical shooting sports.

A long time fan of Microtech Knives, I am honored and excited to be collaborating with Anthony Marfione and the Microtech Team to create the next generation Sigil design.

THE COLLABORATIONIn addition to the D.O.C. collaboration, Anthony Marfione has teamed up with Mick Strider Customs to bring the MSG II to a limited-scale production run.

THE MAKER I’m not really sure if I’ve come full circle or have just been wandering around aimlessly for twenty five years and ended up in the same spot I started.

I never thought I would own a knife making company, to have employees, it just sort of happened that way. Strider Knives became so popular that the company grew out of my control before I knew it. As it turns out, that was a good thing. Strider Knives Inc. has forged its place in history, and I am very proud of my involvement there. Strider Knives Inc. has exceeded every goal I had in knife making, but I’m still hungry.

What I wanted was to show people how knives were really supposed to be. Over the years we had lost the art of the Blade. Blades are the Art of Warfare. Still to this day, more Unit insignia contain blades than firearms. Blade society had ruled the earth since the first humanoid picked up a sharp rock; that was gone and replaced by an explosive driven projectile.

Putting evolved tools into the hands of War Fighters was my goal. Having formed Strider Knives perpetuated that goal. Now I want to focus on my art.

Every knife that leaves this shop was built with my hands. There are no employees.

My goal is to build knives with the focus, intent, and integrity required to breathe fire into every Blade.

NEMESIS™ IV



2015 brings the re-release of the Nemesis IV, a popular favorite that has only existed in limited production runs to date. Several features set this knife apart from our other OTFs. The anodized aircraft grade aluminum chassis houses a 3D machined slide safety (“F” for fire, “S” for safe) and firing button. To retract the blade, a stainless charging handle is released by a liner lock on the side of the handle. The Nemesis IV comes with a molded kydex carry rig.

The sculpted 7075-T6 alloy handle features a matching 3D machined lock bar with a hardened lock face and silicon nitride detent bearing. A threaded integral lanyard mount (patent pending) and silicon nitride ball bearing retaining jib in the pocket clip round out some of the unique functional features of this handle. The blade, crafted from Bohler ELMAX® is expertly ground and sharpened. A silicon nitride bearing race plate allows for ultra-smooth operation. Launched in fall of 2014, the Hara/Marfione Closer is a collaboration that takes it’s inspiration from traditional Japanese style, but presents these elements using more modern machining and aesthetics. The body features a black G10 contoured handle to highlight the details of the bamboo pattern. Hardware is beadblasted 6AL-4V titanium and includes an integrated lanyard loop in the back spacer, and pocket clip with a silicon nitride ball bearing retaining jib. Previously only in existence as a custom model, The Closer is currently in production.

The MSG II is being released as a limited run production piece. A collaboration between Anthony Marfione and Mick Strider, it is based on another limited run knife that Microtech® produced in 2010. A double action automatic folder, the MSG II can be operated using the thumb stud, or fired by pressing the button located on the handle. The contoured ordnance grade aluminum handle is textured with Microtech’s® tri-grip pattern.

SIGIL


Modeled after the original Deryk Munroe Sigil, the Marfione Custom Knives/D.C. Munroe collaboration brings some fascinating new elements to the Sigil. Initially created as a slim EDC knife, the most unique upgrade to this piece is the pocket clip, which recesses into the contours of the 6AL-4V titanium handle when not in use. This spring-loaded design (patent pending) is not only aesthetically pleasing, but provides just as secure of a grip as our traditional clip styles. The titanium lockbar features an interchangeable stainless steel face for added durability. Hardware is also 6AL-4V.

STAR LORD


Newly released as a custom model for the Miami International Knife Expo in 2015, this father/son collaboration between Anthony and Sean Marfione is the first of it’s kind. The Star Lord is a bold piece with modern customizations. The 30K layered carbon fiber handle creates a wide profile, accentuated with heavy jimping along the backspacer and a new proprietary pivot screw. The flipper-style blade is built on the traditional ball bearing pivot for smooth operation, and the frame lock has an replaceable stainless faceplate designed to withstand wear. All hardware is titanium. The Star Lord, as with many of the new MCK folders, also has a silicon nitride ball bearing retaining jib in the pocket clip.

Named after an elite counter-terrorism force, the Socom Delta is one of the more recent additions to our Socom line. Honored with American Made Knife of the Year at the 2012 Blade Show, the revolutionary ceramic bearing system continues to set the bar for our folding knife line. Dual thumb studs enable rapid deployment, and the handle has a heat treated 17-4 PH® stainless backstrap and lock bar with removable insert to hold the blade securely in place. The blade is crafted from Bohler Elmax®, our preferred steel for the combination of edge retention and rust resistance.

Released in 2012, the Tachyon™ II was modeled after Microtech’s® original balisong knife, the Tachyon™ from 2000. Re-engineered to perfection in 2015, the Tachyon™ III reflects the ideal evolution of Microtech’s® balisong line. 6AL-4V titanium handles are machined from solid billet. A redesigned silicon nitride race bearing system creates a flawless flipping mechanism. The blade and overall lengths have been significantly lengthened, generating a new balance compared to its predecessor. The Tachyon™ III also showcases the new spring-loaded pocket clip (patent pending) that sits in a milled channel so it is flush to the handle when not in use.

ARBITER™


The concept for the Arbiter was originally drafted by Adam Marfione back in 2012. We’re excited to bring this piece to production as Adam begins stepping up as a more integral part of our team. Previously only available as a custom knife, the Arbiter features a clip point 9 inch bowie style blade with an elegant recurved primary cutting edge and a secondary upper cutting edge. Both converge to an up-swept tip. G-10 scales with a crisscross patterned texture and grooves along the edge of the handle offer an impressive grip, creating perfect harmony between user and instrument. The Arbiter comes with a custom Blade-Tech carry system.

Adding to our popular Socom lineup, the Socom Alpha is similar in design to the folding Socom Elite. The full tang fixed blade Socom Alpha has a longer blade for balance and function. Jibbing is present around the entire G10 handle for improved grip capabilities. All hardware is 17-4 PH stainless. The Alpha’s sheath is a Blade-Tech custom kydex, molle compatible carry rig.

Named after the Austrian Armed Special Forces Operation group, the Jagdkommando lives up to its elite namesake. Crafted from solid billet, the machining behind the Jagdkommando is almost as impressive as its function. Three sharp edges on the blade twist to a deadly point. The seamless design of this knife is brought together by grooved faces with drilled holes, and a hollow handle with machined grenade pattern. The Jagdkommando comes with a custom hardcoated 6061-T6 tubular sheath that has a matching grenade pattern.

It also comes standard with a custom hardcoated 6061-T6 tubular sheath.

The Microtech® ADO [Alpha Detachment Operative] is crafted from solid billet stainless steel and functions as an ideal boot knife. The hollow handle space is sealed with an o-ring, and accessed by a glass breaker tip that unscrews and features a grenade pattern on the exterior. The ADO comes in a composite carry sheath with spring loaded release to secure the knife.
