FEATURES OF SETS 6000

T esting and evaluation of knowledge is now animportant aspect of recruitment, promotion

and periodic assessment of seafarers.

Assessment (and records of assessments) is anessential element of any quality managementregime or safety management system.

SETS was introduced in 1995 and has been highlysuccessful. SETS has now been redesigned andupdated to SETS 6000, and includes a database ofover 6000 questions.

SETS 6000 is powerful computer based testingpackage designed to assess that standards oftraining and competence are maintained at theSTCW defined level.

The package has a large question database withmultiple-choice questions and answers. Thequestions are classified according to STCWdefined levels of Management, Operation andSupport and are further divided into subject areasthat cover each important maritime competenceas defined by the STCW ‘95 Convention.

SETS 6000 is a key tool for competency-basedtesting as required within STCW ‘95.

● SETS 6000 is very easy to use for the applicantand very little previous computer knowledge isneeded.

● The Administrator has complete control of thetest settings but predefined tests can be lockedfrom editing.

● During a test, the questions are presentedrandomly but chosen according to criteria ofrank, STCW level and subject.

● Quality and appearance of questions areenhanced by the use of relevant photographs, sound and graphics.

● Answers are marked automatically and printedif required.

● Scores from one candidate can be assessedagainst others using the same criteria.

● Test results are available for fastconvenient retrieval at any time.

● Powerful facility to exportresults to remotely installedSETS 6000 packages.

● The use of SETS 6000tests requires minimumuse of theAdministrator’s timecompared with writtentests.

● SETS 6000 is a key toolfor competency-basedtesting as required withinSTCW ‘95. It is designed foruse onboard and ashore.

● The Administrator can set thenumber of questions in a test and themaximum time allowed.

● Exceptional facilities for showing test resultsand production of reports.

● Optional facility to print paper tests.

● SETS 6000 is fully network capable.

SETS 6000 has a large database of multiple-choice questions containing over 6000 questions. The questions are classified into the STCWcompetence levels of Management, Operationand Support and are also structured inaccordance with the STCW Code. This structuring

makes it possible to generate quality-verifiedtests suitable for a wide range of seafarers.

Quetions range widely across the sevenSTCW functional areas, and include

non-STCW subject areas.

The SETS 6000 questiondatabase was produced underthe supervision of VideotelMarine International and allquestions were designed andcontrolled by experiencedmaritime professionals. Thepackage is ideal to assess

competence as defined by theSTCW ‘95 convention and can

be used for:

● assessing competence of applicants

● assessing training requirements

● assessing qualifications of crew onboard ships

SETS 6000 can be supported by a questiondesigner that makes it possible for users to designtheir own questions, adding pictures, animationsand sound to any question. The question designerallows the design three types of question, these are:

■ multiple choice questions■ fill in missing word■ essay type questions

The package automatically marks the first twotypes whereas the Administrator manually marksthe latter. The question designer is a powerfulfacility allowing users the unique opportunity tocreate completely customised questions andanswers. So testing on any aspect of companypolicy or procedures can be easily built into SETS6000.

The SETS 6000 Administrator program can beeasily set up to produce any combination of testsby questions from one or several STCW functionalareas and from any of the three STCWcompetence levels. When a test is given, thequestions from each including subject areautomatically and randomly selected. Choose fromover 6000 questions.

Tests can be exported to remote SETS 6000installations thereby making it possible for mainoffices to standardise assessment at all theirrecruitment centres.

SETS 6000 includes three types of result reportsand a summary report presenting multiple testresults in one datasheet. All reports in SETS 6000can be directly converted to suitable file formatsand transferred by fax or by e-mail via the Internet.Test results can be exported in groups andimported into SETS 6000 installations at othersites. This makes it possible for “head offices” tocompare test results from different recruitmentcentres or training facilities.
