Teachers as designers…

The primary task of the teacher is to design engaging tasks and activities for students that call upon students to learn what the school has determined they should learn, and then leading students to success in the completion of these tasks. Teachers are, therefore, designers and leaders, and the role of teacher needs to be redefined to reflect this view.

OBJECTIVES Design a rollercoaster using styrofoam insulation

tubings as the tracks and marbles as the carts.

An added challenge is to convert the kinetic energy of the balls to move at least 3 simple machines.

STANDARDS (Science 9-12) SP1. Students will analyze the relationships between

force, mass, gravity, & the motion of objects.

SP3. Students will evaluate the forms and transformations of energy.

SCSh3. Students will identify & investigate problems scientifically.

PROCEDURE Your group is given a week to research on rollercoaster

designs, plan your strategies and buy your supplies.

You are then given 2 days to set-up and test your models.

Once your model is ready for testing, the public will be invited to watch and judge your design.

All your procedures need to be properly documented.

Got Game?

IntroductionPong Hau K’i, a board game from China, is also played in Korea under the name

Ou-moul-ko-no. It appears to be deceptively simple. Each of two players has

two stones (or pieces of paper) of different colors.

Each player takes it in turns to

move one stone along a line to

an adjacent empty point, the aim

being to block the opponent’s

stones. For this project students

considered contemporary game

design, taking the role of product

designer to create a game board

and game pieces.

Some students finish the game quickly.

Some games take longer.

Professional Association of Georgia Educators

Step-By-Step: DAY ONE

Game play and rules are introduced by

having two student play the game at

the board with the teacher’s help.

Students are given photocopied sheets

of paper with a basic unembellished

line drawing of the game board.

Day 1 (Cont.)The students play tournament style at their 4-student tables to find the table

winner, table winners play each other until two winners are identified.

Students are told that the final championship match will start the next class

period.

Day 1 [Cont.]

No 2 are alike

The students are then told

that no two game designs

may look alike and they

must create 3 thumbnail

ideas (good ones) and get

an okay from the teacher.

Once we agree on a

design the student writes

their name and the subject

of their work on the board.

Game Theory in the Classroom

Game theory is a branch of applied mathematics which is used in the social

sciences (most notably economics), biology, computer science and

philosophy. Game theory attempts to understand, predict, and capture

behavior in strategic situations, where an individual's success in making

choices depends on the choices of others. While initially developed to

analyze competitions where one individual does better at another's

expense, it has been expanded—particularly in the humanities—to include

numerous cooperative and collaberative situations.

Day two begins with the class “champ” round. Then, I show a PowerPoint of previous classes’ designs and we discuss what is successful and write out a design checklist.

The Design Checklist

10

Professional Association of Georgia Educators

As part of the Checklist Process,

the students generate answers to

the question “What are we

learning?”

The students supply the big

ideas, the teacher helps with the

wording.

The Design Checklist

An important metacognitive practiceWhat are we learning? How artists create realist 3D

designs on 2D surface. The relationship between design and function. How to building creative and

original thinking skills (each

person must solve the problem differently).

Professional Association of Georgia Educators

The students are given a 9x9 piece of poster board and asked to draw their game, bring the drawing for a teacher check, then color it in with the ArtStix (ArtStix are a Prismacolor product-subtitled “woodless coloring pencils.”

Day 3The students complete the coloring of the

board. Then they add sheet vinyl to

make the game board more

noticeable. My vinyl is donated by the

local signs store.

In producing commercial signs, these

sign companies throw away tons of

colorful vinyl that is essentially super

sticky, super colorful sticker!

Wow that’s what I call recycling.

Professional Association of Georgia Educators

Day 3 (cont)

As student finish they play their game and gather data. How many moves does a

typical game takes? Does being the 1st or 2nd player gives either an advantage?

I explain that the more

matches we record the

more accurate the

information.

I then share results

gathered by researchers

testing 3000 matches.

Professional Association of Georgia Educators

Day 4

Students use Shrink Film (Shrinky Dink)

and polymer clay (Sculpey or Fimo) to

create unique game pieces.

Professional Association of Georgia Educators

Polymer Clay pieces are inspired by

Italian Glass designs (left).

Shrink film shrinks to 25%

it’s original size when heated. Comercial shrink

film (above) can be purchased from an art or

hobby store or you may recyle (clear) plastics with

recycle code “6”— it’s the same stuff.

In the Asian Game Board Lesson the fact that the work itself is a game is not the game theory aspect of the project.

The competition to create an original design and the analysis of the game (probability & averages) provide the Game Theory, and serves as a means of increasing and predicting students’ internal and external motivation.

Game Theory in the Classroom

Professional Association of Georgia Educators

Discussing Competition with StudentsGame theory has been

utilized in the classrooms as a means of generating and/or increasing students internal and external motivation to succeed.

However, if things become too competitive the opposite effect may become true.

Consider making a discussion of competition and motivation part of the lesson.

This article is good because it approaches the topic from and unexpected perspective.

Making Learning Fun and Memorable

Kerrin Daniel, M. Ed., 3rd GradeWalker Park ES

Walton County TOTY

Professional Association of Georgia Educators

How can I make teaching and learning exciting and memorable?

Make it:• fun• rewarding• useful

Professional Association of Georgia Educators

How can I plan engaging activities with so little time and resources?

• Use what’s already there!• 3rd Grade Habitats:• Georgia DOE Frameworks

14

Professional Association of Georgia Educators

Making the old into something more exciting!

Good:• Make a visual

exhibit-brochure, poster, etc.

• Present and display exhibit!

Better:• Immerse your kids!• Let your students

make different areas of your room into different habitats!

• Let kids take an in-school field trip through the habitats!

Professional Association of Georgia Educators

Now which is better???• Which is more

memorable?• Which is more

engaging?• Which is more fun?• Which is more

rewarding?

Professional Association of Georgia Educators

But how much will they learn?

Take it a step further!Students will use Jeopardy game template to design and build

questions and answers about their habitat- plants, animals, adaptations, and a review category where students can create questions from previous units and content. Once completed, students will play the games with their peers. Extra points are given for those teams who “stump” their peers with difficult questions. Team with the most points after each game played wins. Habitats are can be viewed by all school students who are also invited to ask questions. Winning team will also have pictures of their habitat displayed in the school lobby display case!
