The total for the priced material is over $15,000, but many of these prices are at best hopeful, as many of the stamps do not have their faults described or refl ected in the price. For example, a sample check revealed that “mint hinged” is sometimes no gum, some of the early issues have clipped perfs, etc. Still lots of value here, and many good stamps with a high actual catalogue, or retail value. We have scanned all online, but rec-ommend careful inspection.

1531 #14- Lovely Collection of Used in Two Albums, 1859 to 1996. This collector only seeked out very high quality stamps, the majority with c.d.s. cancels and many being socked on the nose, even on the modern issues, which is sometimes a chal-lenge. Huge catalogue value and includes many better items such as #17, 28, 46, 47 (x3 including a pair), 50-59, 66-84, 96-103, and the list goes on. Includes coils (some pairs), extra shades and some varieties, some booklet panes, over-printed offi cials, postage dues, etc. Appears to be more than 90% complete in period, and centering varies from fi ne to very fi ne, with some jumbo copies noted. We have uploaded some scans to give a taste, but recommend seeing this one in per-son to better appreciate the high quality involved.

.................................................................................Est $1,250

Also includes (but not counted in total catalogue value) a further 7 Manilla stock pages crammed with more valuable material, including quantities of Small Queens to the 50c, Québecs, Edwards, Leafs, Numerals, Dues, and so on up to about the 1930s, which is catalogued would certainly add thousands more to the total. The Jack Gray Collection of Topicals

Jack was fi rst, last and always a story-teller - a professional writer in a number of genres: magazine articles, stage plays, radio plays, screenplays, and (unpublished) novels. He was also a lifelong collector, mainly of books and stamps, but also any kind of material related to his many enthusiasms – history, literature, theatre and music, printing and typography, humour, cooking, games and tea. Stamp collecting for him was always as much about the story as the stamp, so his collection from the beginning leaned in the direction of topics. His earliest and most enduring love was ships and all things nautical, but at the time of his death in February 2017 at the age of 89, the number of topics he was actively collecting was over 200. He was assiduous in tracking down the earliest examples of any of his topics, diligently working through the checklists of the American Topical Association as well as any other sources he could fi nd, and over the course of time assembled a very large database of fi rsts, with lots of interesting stories to go with them. He wanted to share this wealth of philatelic lore with his fellow collectors and found the perfect way by writing a book called “What’s First”, published by the ATA and released on August 9, 2018 at the ATA convention in Columbus, Ohio. He would have loved to see the end result, but the joy was in the journey.

The following 57 lots are mostly from the Jack Gray collection and contain many tens of thousands of stamps, many sorted or displayed in albums but also many in bulk unsorted envelopes, and still we noted li le duplication overall. The number of items in each topic ranges from a few (these have been grouped with others) to several thousands of items (ie. Ships). Items from Jack lo ed elsewhere in the catalogue have the “JG” designation.
