After the Lake Worth CRA completed significant building renovations, the Armory Annex celebrated its grand reopening on Thursday, November 12, 2015, with the reception of Discovering Our New World.

For this photographic exhibit the Armory collaborated with the Palm Beach Photographic Centre of West Palm Beach. The show is part of the Photographic Centre’s Picture My World program.

Images were selected from hundreds made over a nine-month period in which the teens, all recent immigrants from Central America, and their mentors met weekly to explore their new home of Lake Worth. Fifty photographic prints were accompanied by journal entries in English and Spanish. The entries provide insight into the children’s perilous journey to be reunited with family members.

The Armory’s Executive Director Kim Harty and Director of Education and Exhibitions Liza Niles have had ongoing dialogue with Lake Worth community leaders and arts groups in identifying better ways for the Armory Annex to serve the local Lake Worth community. Kim Harty said, “For me the beauty of the show was the collaboration between the organizations and the city. It can be difficult to get a variety of groups to work together on a project, but it is so powerful when it all comes together.”

An estimated 200 people attended. Mirimba music and food were provided by residents associated with the Guatemalan Mayan Center. Ann Brown, Armory board member said about the exhibition “It really is very moving and heart-warming to see these

innocent children find a new home after going through circumstances most of us could never understand.”

C H A N G E S I N T R A N S F E R S A N D P R O R A T I N G P O L I C Y In order to maintain the quality of instruction the transfer and proration policies have been changed. Students wishing to transfer from one course to anotherin the same session may do so prior to the second meeting of the course and only if space is available in class. If you do not attend a class, the Armory must still pay the teacher; therefore, classes paid for but not attended are not eligible for transfer or refund. Purchasing less than the full number of classes of a course is an option on a limited basis, but may not be less than 4 classes during one session. Other restrictions may apply.

eric & constance

Many thanks to Eric Straub and Constance Bonhomme, the two creative young students who joined the Armory’s Marketing department this past summer and contributed their time and talent “getting the word out” about the Armory while gaining professional experience.

Eric Straub is a student at Florida State University studying for his BA in editing, writing, and media. Eric started in August and devoted the following three months to writing press releases, designing exhibition cards, updating the faculty pages of the website, editing copy for the 2016 Master Artist Workshops, and more.

Constance Bonhomme, a native of Paris, France, studies at EMLYON Business School in Lyon, France. Arriving in West Palm Beach in late August, she worked full-time through early December. Among her substantial contributions was administrating our social media, designing our weekly email newsletter, updating our website, and taking superb photographs.

We will certainly miss Eric and Constance and wish them well as they continue their studies and develop their careers. Please come back and visit us!

The Armory is a great place to gain experience. If you would like to learn about internship opportunities, please visit our website armoryart.org/internship

We will begin the first session with the classic blank slate. Sheets of white paper and paint will be our medium to begin with as we move these blank sheets to the next step, setting the tone for the rest of our journey. We will transform these two sheets of paper into two books: one soft cover, one hardcover. We’ll spend our next two sessions on content. Along the way, we will learn some great low-tech print and collage techniques you may not have been familiar with before. Your two books will evolve organically. You can use text, images, and perhaps introduce a theme. as you learn techniques which you can use again and again in your future book works.

S C H O O L P O L I C I E SThe Armory Art Center is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. The following policies and measures are in place so we can continue to pursue our mission to inspire the creation and experience of art. Tuition fees cover only about half of the art school’s operating costs. The remainder of our budget is raised through grants, fundraisers, and donations, thereby subsidizing student tuition. When registering for any class at the Armory Art Center, students acknowledge the understanding of and agree to the policies listed below.

L IABILITYThe Armory will not assume liability for injuries that occur within the subject area where the student is enrolled. Upon registration for any course, the student assumes all reasonable liability from injuries related to the scope of the coursework being taught and releases the Armory Art Center from any liability claims related to any inju-ries and/or accidents that may occur. The student can be assured that every reasonable safety precaution is taken by the center. The Armory Art Center is not responsible for any artwork or personal items lost or stolen in the classrooms or lockers.

MEMBERSHIP Members are entitled to take an unlimited number of classes at the Armory and membership, renewed annually, is required of all students. The more classes you take, the greater the value of your membership, considering only about half of the cost to run the art school comes from tuition and lab fees with the remainder of our budget needs coming in from contributions, grants, and fundraising events.

REFUNDSA non-refundable registration fee equal to 10% of the course tuition is included in each course registration, excluding one day workshops and Pop-up Workshops. Students who withdraw from a course at least five (5) working days prior to the start of that course are eligible to receive a full tuition refund minus the registration fee. Students who withdraw from their course less than five (5) working days before the start of that course or once the course has started are not eligible for a refund. No refunds will be issued due to a student’s failure to attend class.

CANCELED OR MISSED COURSESThere are no make-up classes due to student illness, travel, or other reasons that are not the responsibility of the Armory Art Center. Students enrolled in courses which are canceled by the Armory due to lack of enrollment or instructor illness will receive a full refund. Every effort will be made to notify students at least 24 hours before the first class. The Armory reserves the right to substitute instruc-tors for any of its classes at any time.

CHANGES TO TRANSFERS & PRORATING POLICY In order to maintain the quality of instruction the transfer and proration policies have been changed. Students wishing to transfer from one course to another in the same session may do so prior to the second meeting of the course and only if space is available in class. If you do not attend a class, the Armory must still pay the teacher; therefore, classes paid for but not attended are not eligible for transfer or refund. Purchasing less than the full number of classes of a course is an option on a limited basis, but may not be less than 4 classes during one session. Other restrictions may apply.

DISCOUNTSPalm Beach County teachers receive a 25% discount on classes with proof of school ID. Youth (ages 14 - 18) receive a 25% discount on tuition for adult classes.

MULTIPLE COURSE DISCOUNT: A multiple course discount cannot be combined with any other discount. This discount only applies to 4 and 8 week classes. This discount does not apply when classes are pro-rated.
